Sony a6300 Vs Canon 700D – Common Features

In this section, we get to see how similar the cameras are to each other. We’ve compiled those features that you are sure to find in both cameras. And just so you know, while some of those features will look and perform exactly the same, some others will be slightly different.

1. Articulating Screen

First off, both the Sony a6300 and the Canon 700D have an articulating screen, quite alright. However, this is one of those features that are slightly different with the two cameras. That said, what is an articulating screen?

An articulating screen is basically a screen that can be turned in certain directions (depending on the type) independent of the camera body.

Now, as we said, there are kinds of articulating screen. There is the tilting screen that can be turned upward in degrees that vary from camera to camera. The basic idea is that the screen can be turned upward and back down again.

On the other hand there is the full-flex screen. This one can be turned all the way, 360 degrees. This kind of screen on a camera makes the camera a good tool for those who are wont to do their video recording by themselves.

Whatever the kind of articulating screen, the idea is always for you to be able to shoot or record your subject from different interesting angles. That said, while the Canon 700D has a full-flex screen, the Sony a6300 has a tilting screen.

Finally, both cameras have a 3 inch screen. However, while that of the Sony a6300 isn’t touch sensitive, that of the Canon 700D is.

2. Viewfinder

Here is another feature that isn’t quite the same with both cameras. We’ve added this to our common features for the basic reason that they both have a viewfinder. However, because of the kind of camera they both are, they do not have the same kind of viewfinder.

Now, before you run off saying that the viewfinder thing is a given, you need to understand that not all mirrorless cameras come with an inbuilt viewfinder. You’d be hard pressed to find a DSLR without a viewfinder, however, some mirrorless cameras are also ‘viewfinderless’.

These mirrorless cameras that do not have a viewfinder are usually of two kinds. Some have an external port to which you can attach an external viewfinder. However, some others do not make such provision.

In those cases, you’ll have to make do with the LCD screen which might be good enough till you get in very bright light. Viewing images on the LCD screen in very bright light could be quite frustrating as it could be difficult to see what is on the screen.

Thankfully, the Sony a6300 has its own electronic viewfinder while the Canon 700D has its own optical viewfinder.

One last thing. While the Sony a6300’s viewfinder has a 100% coverage, that of the Canon 700D has a 95% coverage. What this means is means is that images on the Sony a6300’s viewfinder appear as close as possible to the way they look to the human eye than that of the Canon 700D.

3. Flash

Ever tried to take a picture in a place where the lighting was bad? If yes, you most definitely already understand the importance of a flash, the inbuilt kind that is. Of course, that inbuilt flash has not been able to solve all bad light issues, however, you’ll have to agree with us that it has had its uses.

It’s the same with the inbuilt flash that both the Sony a6300 and the Canon 700D have. However, both cameras come with something more than the inbuilt flash and that is the flash shoe for an external flash.

In those cases where the inbuilt flash isn’t enough to take care of things, the external flash will be of great help. Additionally, if you want to take flash photography, you’ll be thankful for this feature too.

4. Microphone Port

A good number of modern digital cameras double as video cameras. As a result, a good number of them have an inbuilt microphone and even an inbuilt stereo. With these you are able to record videos and their audio and even playback what you have recorded.

However, more often than not, the inbuilt microphone isn’t the best at capturing great audio quality. The videos end up sounding too noisy because of the things that the microphone allowed in.

This is why some cameras have the microphone port feature just like the two cameras in this review. You can now decide to attach a standard microphone to your camera; one that is able to attend to your specific audio needs.

5. RAW Support

When you take with a camera, there are two basic formats in which they can be stored: jpeg and RAW. Photos stored as jpeg have one advantage which is that they do not take up so much storage space. However, because they are usually of a dumbed down quality, the jpeg format is not favored by professionals.

On the other hand, RAW photos take up quite a bit of space. However, that is something that can be easily taken care of by quickly transferring your files to an off camera location. Especially seeing as RAW formats usually retain their original quality. While jpeg does not offer the worst quality, the RAW format is definitely better.

6. Face Detection

Both cameras have this feature that allows them detect faces as you set them to take a snap. When they have detected those faces, they are able to lock down on those faces, allowing them to be precise in taking those photos and making them good portrait cameras.

Sony a6300 Vs Canon 700D – Unique Features

In this section, we get to see how different the cameras are from each other. Hence, this section contains those features that you will find in one camera but not the other. It also contains those features that appear in both but are so very different.

1. Mirrorless Vs DSLR

This is the most prominent difference between the two cameras as this one factor is responsible for a number of other factors. So, let’s cut right to the chase, the Sony a6300 is a mirrorless camera while the Canon 700D is a DSLR camera. So what?

The basic difference between a mirrorless and a DSLR is the absence/presence of a mirror and an optical viewfinder. Mirrorless cameras for the absence and DSLRs for the presence. That said, the absence/presence of these features actually affect the way things work.

With a DSLR, since there is a mirror, when light passes through the lens, it hits the mirror first. The light then bounces off the mirror and part of it hits the Autofocus sensor while the other part hits the optical viewfinder.

On the other hand, because a mirrorless camera is missing the mirror, when light passes through the lens, it hits the sensor straight away. Furthermore, the sensor sends a digital image to the electronic viewfinder or the LCD screen, whichever is applicable.

Now, mirrorless cameras are considered to be generally lighter than DSLR cameras. And this has been attributed to the absence of a mirror. There are a number of other features that have been said to be unique to one or the other kind of camera as you’ll get to find out soon.

2. Weight

With the Sony a6300 weighing 0.9 pound and the Canon 700D weighing 1.3 pounds, you can see that the Canon 700D (which is the DSLR) is 0.4 pound heavier than the Sony a6300. And this supports the stereotypes of DSLR and mirrorless cameras.

Anyway, neither camera can exactly be considered heavy. We actually believe that while the weight difference between the two cameras is pretty significant, both cameras are of a comfortable weight and one won’t have issues transporting either about.

That said, the weight we’ve been talking about has been specific to the body alone. However, to make a conclusive decision in regard to the weight of a camera, you have to factor in the weight of the lenses too. To do that, we need not go looking through all the lenses, we just look at the sensor size.

Both cameras have the same size APS-C sensor. What this means is that for the same aperture and focal length both cameras will use lenses that are similar in weight and size. So, the lenses cannot be the factor that tips the scale when it comes to the comparative weight of these two cameras.

3. Wireless Connection

This feature is one thing that has become increasingly important for photographers, especially those who are trying to save storage space by immediately sending out photos. Now, a wireless connection is supposed to help you gain access to the internet and connect with other devices if necessary.

That said, the Sony a6300 has this feature built in. so, if you’re using this camera, you basically just need your camera and a good Wi-Fi connection to be able to gain access to the internet. Via this connection, you can connect to other devices and wirelessly send your files to a different device.

On the other hand, the Canon 700D does not have a wireless connection built in. So, to gain access to the internet, you’ll have to get an external device called Eye-Fi. While this Eye-Fi will allow you access to the internet, it is pretty slow and the reach is limited too.

Furthermore, there is something called the Near Field Communication (NFC) connection. This feature also allows you connect to other devices wirelessly. However, just like your device, that other device has to be NFC enabled in other for there to be a connection.

Via this connection, you can wirelessly transfer files from your camera to a different device. That said, of the two cameras in this review, only the Sony a6300 has this NFC feature.

Finally, the Sony a6300 can be controlled via a smartphone. All you need do is download the right app and make the camera-smartphone connection. Once that has been established, you can take shots and change settings on your camera from your smartphone.

4. Sensor Resolution

This one basically gives us an idea of how good the picture quality will be. The higher the sensor resolution in megapixels, the better the quality of the picture, the more adjustments you are able to make and the larger you are able to print.

That said, the Sony a6300 does it better with the sensor resolution. It offers a 24 megapixel resolution while the Canon 700D offers 18 megapixels. And honestly, the 6 megapixels is significant enough that it differentiates between the camera that allows you crop your photos and the one that doesn’t.

5. Continuous Shooting

When a camera is set to the continuous shooting mode, it is able to take more than one shot in just one second and with one click of the shutter button. The basic idea of this continuous shooting mode is for you to take as many pictures as possible in as little time as possible.

So, you already know that the higher the continuous shooting rate in frames per second, the better the camera is at capturing the moment. That said, this something else where the Sony a6300 does it better than the Canon 700D. The Sony a6300 can take 11 frames per second while the Canon 700D offers only 5 frames per second.

As a result, the Sony a6300 is the better camera for shooting subjects that tend to move about a lot like toddlers and even sports people.

6. Battery Life

This is one of those factors that have been said to be unique to one camera or the other. That is, DSLRs have been known to have a longer battery life than mirrorless cameras, and while this is not always the case, it almost always is and it is the case for the two cameras in this review.

With the Canon 700D, you get 440 shots before it needs to be charged. Now, while this is not a very good example of the battery life you can get with a DSLR, it is still longer than the Sony a6300’s 400 shots per charge.

Anyway, seeing as neither of these cameras is a professional camera, the battery life might actually be quite satisfactory. It all depends on what you’ll be using the camera for. If you are not a heavy user, 400 or 440 shots might be enough.

7. ISO Range

This one tells us about a camera’s sensitivity, to light that is. The more sensitive a camera is to light, the more light it is able to capture and vice versa.

Now, if you are trying to take a picture in an area where the light isn’t enough, you’ll need to set your camera to a high ISO. This is because in a high ISO, the camera is able to let in as much light as possible, making up for the lack of light. However, in this setting, there is a higher possibility of having noisy photos.

On the other hand, if the light is just too much, you’ll need to set your camera to a low setting. And this is because in a low ISO, the camera lets in as little light as is necessary in order to balance things out.

Now, the range is what tells us the upper and lower limits of a camera’s light sensitivity. If both sides of the spectrum will come in handy at one point or the other, it becomes imperative to get a camera that has as wide an ISO as possible, just so that you have as many options as possible.

That said, the Sony a6300 has a 100 to 25600 ISO range which can be adjusted to 51200. On the other hand, the Canon 700D has a 100 to 12800 ISO range. Nothing more to that!

8. Weather Sealing

When it is said that a camera is weather sealed it usually means that said camera is dustproof, water resistant, waterproof, a combination of two or a combination of all three.

That said, of the two cameras in this review, only the Sony a6300 is weather sealed. Specially, this camera is both dustproof and water resistant. Be careful to note that water resistant does not mean waterproof.

A waterproof camera can be used underwater but a water resistant camera can only take a couple of accidental splashes. However, the Sony a6300 is still the better protected camera of the two cameras in this review.

9. Available Lenses

We talked about the lenses when we were trying to determine the size of the cameras. However, right now, we are not looking at what the lenses weigh but at how many of them you can get with either camera. The Sony a6300 has 102 lenses available while the Canon 700D has 319 lenses available with it.

Furthermore, neither the Sony a6300 nor the Canon 700D has an inbuilt image stabilization feature. as a result, pictures taken with either camera could end up looking blurry. However, this is not something that cannot be corrected.

Each camera has a number of optical stabilization lenses available with it (the Sony a6300 has 23 while the Canon 700D has 91 lenses available). If any of them is attached, the camera balances out and the images come out looking stable.

This camera seems to be quite popular among vloggers. And despite the fact that this video does not record 4k videos, vloggers like it primarily because the screen is full-flex. They can rotate it and do their video recording without help. People also like that there are enough options for configuring the camera. Then there is the touch screen and one customer actually called the battery life long.
However, some photographers apparently miss the in-body image stabilization feature, despite the fact that an optical stabilization lens can be used. The lack of a headphone jack is missed by the video recording population of the customer base.
