Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 – Detailed Comparison

Today we are pitting two of the world’s biggest camera brands head to head. We can’t tell you how excited we are to be reviewing these two cameras – the Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 and for obvious reasons. These are cameras with some serious pedigree.

Sony a5000 vs Canon T6
Sony vs Canon T6

We have compared some of their pro cameras but today, the cameras we are looking at are entry-level devices.

They are super affordable. In fact, neither of them is even up to half a thousand bucks. They are also lightweight with crop sensors, pretty much like every other beginner camera.

Nonetheless, as with branding in general, different brands typically have their own unique touch even when manufacturing the same things.

The focus of one company might not be the focus of the other. So, even if both cameras are beginner cameras, they still have their target audience which they appeal to.

So, are you just starting out in the photography industry? Trying to choose between the Sony a5000 vs Canon T6? We’ve got you covered in this article. Come on, let’s get this party started.

PS: If you need a backup camera or something for casual photography as a hobbyist, this article is also for you. So, don’t run away just yet.

Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 – Comparison Overview

This section summarizes the gist of today’s comparison of the Sony a5000 vs Canon T6. If you can’t afford the time to go through the entire article (we know it’s long because it leaves no stone unturned), then you can read through this article so you can make your decision on the fly.

Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 – Where Both Cameras Get It Right

The top three qualities both cameras share that make them fantastic buys are their cost, weight, and beginner-friendliness.

These cameras are entry-level cameras and we found that many beginners enjoyed working with them. Even the Canon T6 which is a DSLR wasn’t too complex for beginners to navigate.

If you’re new into photography and you need a camera that’s more your speed, either of these cameras would work. And whichever you prefer – mirrorless or DSLR – there’s a camera here in each category. So, there’s something for you.

Besides that, these cameras are affordable each selling for less than a thousand bucks for camera body and lens. In fact, both cameras sell for about half that price tag. This makes them attractive options for the beginner.

Also, because they are lightweight, they are easy to carry around. Plus lenses are interchangeable as well which is great.

Additionally, both the Sony a5000 and the Canon T6 come with a wireless connection. You’ll be able to upload your pictures immediately and share them instantly. And then the NFC connection also helps for instant pairing with other devices as well.

Finally, we love the max sensor resolutions of these cameras. They are good enough although the Sony a5000 has a sharper sensor. But then again, with the Canon T6, there’s the benefit of getting DSLR quality images in a small camera body.

Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 – Where The Sony a5000 Does It Better

There are actually a number of areas where the Sony a5000 does much better than the Canon T6, to be honest. It’s hardly even a competition between the Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 in that regard.

For instance, the LCD screen of the Sony a5000 is articulating unlike the Canon T6. It might not be fully articulating or have the touch feature, but it tilts which makes the camera more convenient to use.

The Canon T6, on the other hand, has a fixed screen. Nobody does that these days and it’s really funny because the T6i which is the upgrade from the T6 comes with a fully articulating screen and a touch feature!

Also, in low light, the Sony a5000 is again the clear winner. Well, we all know Sony to do amazing when it comes to low light. This camera has a low light ISO of 1089 while the Canon T6 has a low light ISO of 789.

So, if you’re into scenes where light is always unpredictable or low, then the Sony a5000 is a better option.

The Sony a5000 also has a better dynamic range as well as sensor resolution.

We’d say the continuous shooting feature of the Sony a5000 is better than that of the Canon T6, but not really. It’s only better by one frame per second. The Sony a5000 has a 4 frame per second continuous shooting while that of the Canon T6 is 3 frames per second.

Lastly, the Sony a5000 is lighter than the Canon T6 which is expected since it’s a mirrorless camera. So, on paper, the Sony a5000 would be easier to carry around. But then again, both cameras are considerably lightweight either way so that might not be much of an edge.

Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 – Where The Canon T6 Does It Better

The first major advantage of the Canon T6 is that it is a DSLR camera. This already gives the Canon T6 an edge over the Sony a5000 (a mirrorless camera) in image quality.

Although with a lower sensor resolution, the Canon T6 being a DSLR would give better images in comparison to the Sony a5000.

Also, unlike the Sony a5000, the Canon T6 comes with a viewfinder which helps your picture taking as well.

Furthermore, the Canon T6 has a longer battery life in comparison to the Sony a5000. And that’s to be expected since the Canon T6 is a DSLR camera and DSLR cameras typically have better battery lives.

Lastly, the Canon T6 has a better flash coverage than the Sony a5000.

Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 – Where Both Cameras Get It Wrong

The first common con these two cameras share is that they both lack image stabilization. The lack of image stabilization limits the use of these cameras especially in settings where there is a lot of movement.

Also, using long lenses on either of these cameras wouldn’t be great so consider using a tripod or any other stabilizing rig in such a situation.

The continuous shooting feature of these two cameras is not amazing. We’re looking at 3 frames and 4 frames per second. It’s really limiting and definitely not for fast-paced environments but you can wing it for other settings.

Again, both cameras do not have a jack for an external mic. This could hamper sound quality in your video. But the built-in mic might be good enough for you, depending on what you’re shooting for.

Lastly, neither of these cameras is weather-sealed. This sort of affects the durability of the camera. You want to handle these cameras carefully and avoid using them in cases of unpredictable weather.

Price Value Ratio – Sony a5000 vs Canon T6

Which is more expensive: Sony a5000 vs Canon T6?

The Sony a5000 is more expensive than the Canon T6. However, both cameras come at a good price which makes them super affordable.

But then again, the fact that they are inexpensive doesn’t make them cheap or low quality. These are actually excellent cameras for what they are supposed to do.

Plus, they are entry-level cameras. As a matter of fact, these are some of the best deals you can get when it comes to cameras for beginners.

Nonetheless, we do think Sony did a better job balancing price with value than Canon. The Canon T6 only has the advantage of being a DSLR camera. But if a DSLR camera is what you want, we think you might be making a wiser choice if you decide to get its bigger brother – the Canon T6i.

For only a couple of hundred dollars more you’ll be getting a DSLR camera with a fully articulating touch screen and other more impressive features as well.

Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 – Comparative Brand Strengths

We are looking at two giant camera companies here, although, in the hierarchy of things, Canon is the bigger brand of the two. Especially in North America and Europe, Canon has a huge market share followed by Nikon before Sony.

Sony is not exactly a DSLR brand. All sony cameras are mirrorless and full frames too. Sony’s full-frame cameras are the best in the industry and they come in two different lines.

The alpha R cameras for excellent resolution, and the alpha S cameras for amazing low light capabilities.

Canon, on the other hand, is a way older brand than Sony. The company was founded in 1934 and unlike Sony which is focused on mirrorless cameras, Canon has huge offerings in nearly all camera categories from DSLR to mirrorless cameras to compacts.

Canon is popular for making both high-end cameras and cameras that are great for beginners. It’s a brand that’s trusted by many photographers and its excellent image quality speaks for itself. Canon cameras are a bit tougher to learn especially in areas like the menu.

Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 – Circumstances They Are Best SUited For

Sony a5000

Canon T6

The Sony a5000 is a great camera for any beginner looking to start out in the business of photography.
It’s an entry-level camera and is also quite inexpensive which makes it affordable for the average beginner.
It’s also a great camera for hobbyists and pro photographers as well as looking for a backup camera.
It works for casual, day-to-day photography and the quality of images you get is quite impressive with its 20-megapixel sensor.

As for the video, the Sony a5000 is also a good choice. However, the lack of a jack for an external microphone presents a small problem. It will affect sound quality. But then again, depending on what your project is, the sound quality might be okay.
The Canon T6 is also a beginner camera with the price and weight to boot.

Now, the Canon T6 is particularly for beginners looking to work with a DSLR camera.

DSLR cameras are quite a lot of work to learn with. However, in this camera, Canon has simplified the DSLR.
It’s easier to work around and your best bet if you’re looking to begin with a DSLR.
It’s also a great option for those who have been working with mirrorless cameras and are looking to go into DSLR.

Videography also suffers the same challenge as Sony a5000 when using the Canon T6 – no jack for an external mic so the sound quality might be a problem.
Also, there’s just the slightest problem with autofocusing when using the Canon T6 for video.

Other than those two, the Canon T6 will do a good job for video too.

Common Features Of The Sony a5000 And The Canon T6

The following features are common to both the Sony a5000 and the Canon T6:

1. Great Sensor Resolution

2. Great ISO

3. 3 Inch LCD Screen

4. RAW Support

5. Shutter Speed

6. Focus Points

7. Dynamic Range

8. Low FPS

9. Continuous Shooting

10. 1920 x 1080

11. Video Resolution

12. No Image Stabilization

13. No Weather Sealing

APS-C Crop Sensor

Which uses an APS-C sensor: Sony a5000 or Canon T6?

The Sony a5000 and Canon T6 both use the same sensor size which is the APS-C sensor. This is a common feature for less expensive, entry-level cameras as they cost less.

Typically, when making cameras, the sensor takes up the greatest part of the manufacturing cost. The larger the size of the sensor, the more expensive it is to manufacture the sensor. This is why you don’t find entry-level cameras with full-frame sensors.

So, to crop sensors. A crop sensor is smaller than a full-frame sensor as the name probably already intimates. This affects a number of things as you might guess.

Firstly, crop sensors, as their names suggest, only take a crop of the actual frame you’re photographing. This means that when you compare a photo taken from a full-frame camera with one taken from a crop sensor camera, you’d notice a difference.

The one from the crop sensor camera looks a little tighter, cropped if you may than the one from the full-frame which looks more “encompassing.”

While full-frame sensors have the advantage of a wider angle and shallower depth with increased dynamic range, crop sensors do not have all of that.

So, generally, full-frame cameras turn out better image quality. Nonetheless, they are not only expensive to buy, but they can also be somewhat expensive to run.

Not to mention that full-frame cameras are also heavier than crop sensors due to their larger size. So those in the market for lightweight cameras they can easily lug around, crop sensors might be better options than full-frame sensors.

So, back to expenses. We mentioned that full-frame cameras are a little more expensive to work with than crop sensors. Here’s an example to prove it. Say you’re into telephoto photography (think wildlife, photojournalism, or sports), setting up with a full-frame camera from the body to the lens can cost between $15000 to $20000.

On the other hand, if you’re working with an APS-C sensor camera, the cost is far reduced to about one-third of what you’d spend with a full-frame.

So, you see why it makes more sense to use a crop sensor as a beginner? Quality might not compare but until photography starts to pay, then this might be your best bet.

Good Sensor Resolution

Which has a good sensor resolution: Sony a5000 or Canon T6?

The Sony a5000 and Canon T6 both have good sensor resolutions. That of the Canon T6 is sharper though at 20 megapixels as against the 18 megapixels of the Sony a5000. But generally, they both do well in picture quality.

With these cameras, you’ll be able to print in large sizes and do a pretty good cropping job as well.

Now to compare the Sony a5000 vs the Canon T6, you find that the image quality of the Canon T6 is better than that of the Sony a5000.

That is because the Canon T6 is a DSLR camera and the Sony a5000 isn’t. Yeah, do not be deceived by the size, the Canon T6 is a real monster, in a good way, of course.

It’s got the size of a DSLR sensor but such a small body that makes you forget that it is actually a DSLR camera. The difference between both cameras in their image quality isn’t so gaping but it is there.

As for print size, you can print in sizes of about 11 by 14 inches when you take pictures with either of these cameras. These cameras could also get you pictures in other larger sizes larger than 11 by 14 inches up to 20 by 30 inches in pretty decent quality as well.

Great ISO

Which has a high ISO: Sony a5000 or Canon T6?

Both the Sony a5000 and Canon T6 come with high ISOs for the camera category which they belong to which is entry-level. The Sony a5000 has a low light ISO of 1089 while the Canon T6 has a low light ISO of 789.

Anyway, that said, it’s a general fear, in fact, one of the most feared things in photography, to take pictures with high ISOs. Why? Everyone fears the almighty noise that would render your pictures useless without batting an eyelid.

However, technology has advanced, and while it is still a feared thing, there are ways to maximize a high ISO without getting your photos royally messed up. Adjusting shutter speed and aperture settings are two of the ways.

However, as we said, these are not as sophisticated as pro cameras from Sony and Canon. So, for their category, their ISOs are okay.

Now, let’s talk about low light capability. Sony is the undisputed king of low light in the industry, especially in its a7S series. It seems though that’s a trait Sony decided to bless the Sony a5000 with.

So, for the photographer into low light or unpredictable light settings, for the most part, you’re always better off with a Sony camera.

3 Inch LCD Screen

An LCD screen is important for cameras, and pro or not, most cameras have one. You use this screen to compose your scenes. Plus the screens also display certain information about the image being captured as well which might or might not need adjustment as the case may be.

Now, with the advancement in technology, it’s now common to find tilting/articulating screens. In fact, these are fast being replaced by flip screens these days. Articulating screens are one thing. You can bend them to certain angles to get them to a position that’s convenient for you.

However, there are also fully articulating or flip screens that can rotate completely to your convenience. So, you can move them completely to face you. This makes them great for taking selfies or recording one-man videos.

That said, let’s compare the Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 in this regard. The Sony a5000 comes with a tilting/articulating screen while the screen of the Canon T6 is fixed. We find this a bit funny especially since the Canon T6 is coming two years after the Sony a5000.

However, Canon more than makes up for this on the T6i. That one comes with a fully articulating screen and is even a touch screen as well. Pretty cool, right? Well, stop salivating, we’re here for the Canon T6 and it does not come with an articulating screen.

This would, of course, be an inconvenience especially when you need to take photos at some awkward angles. And then again there’s also the thing with seeing your menu conveniently. It’s harder if the screen is fixed.

So, for flexibility and convenience, the Sony a5000 would make the better choice.

RAW Support

Which has the RAW support feature: Sony a5000 or Canon T6?

Both the Sony a5000 and Canon T6 have the RAW support feature. RAW images come out pretty large and muted. You’d have to process them and compress them to be able to share them on the web.

This is unlike shooting in JPEG where pictures come out already processed and compressed so they are instantly sharable.

Another feature that’s common to all modern cameras, we have RAW support. If you’re going to be shooting in RAW, there are loads of benefits with that.

And then, of course, there’s always the option to shoot in JPEG if you want. But then again, everyone just shoots in RAW because they are much better in terms of quality and otherwise.

So, what does shooting in RAW translate to? Well, we already said the pictures are of better quality. However, there’s a reason RAW photos are referred to as RAW photos and that’s because they come out uncompressed and unprocessed.

Processing RAW photos require special software as not all kinds of software work for RAW photos. So if you’re just starting out, think of getting Photoshop or Lightroom to edit your photos.

Also, if your computer is an old model, then you might want to consider upgrading it. You’d need a computer with a fast processor to edit RAW photos conveniently and easily.

Now, besides image quality, RAW photos really rock as they exhibit non-destructive editing. This means that the original image quality is always retained no matter what.

So, despite the level of editing, you carry out on a RAW photo, the original image quality is untouched which means that if you undo the edit, the photo remains the same. It’s not the same with other photo formats.

Also, you’d find it much easier to salvage a RAW photo than other photo formats. This means that if you take a photo and it falls short in certain areas like exposure or white balance, even noise, you can easily use your preferred software to fix all that.

Shutter Speed

What is the shutter speed of the Sony a5000 and Canon T6?

Both the Sony a5000 and Canon T6 come with a max shutter speed of 1/4000 second which also goes down to as slow as 30 seconds. At 1/4000 shutter speed, your camera would be able to take photos of a moving object without any blur. So, the faster the shutter speed, the lower the chances of blurring.

There are definitely faster shutter speeds. However, like we like to remind you, these are entry-level cameras, so 1/4000 second is quite great if you consider it.

A range of shutter speeds like the Sony a5000 and Canon T6 have is fantastic. You basically have a whole lot to play with at the tip of your fingers. Plus, different shutter speeds give different kinds of effects.

For instance, if you’re looking to capture objects in motion, then you’d have to use faster shutter speed. At this speed, your camera would do a beautiful job of capturing the object frozen in motion.

This does not mean, however, that slow shutter speeds are not to be used ever. Slow shutter speeds and, in fact, the blur they create with objects in motion can actually be helpful.

If you need to promote the speed of a particular automobile, for instance, the blur along the wheels can help to create that sense of speed.

Also, photographers who take pictures of our Milky Way at night would require a slower, rather than a faster shutter speed to do an accurate job. Slower shutter speeds allow more light in than faster shutter speeds which makes them better suited for certain low light situations.

Focus Points

Which has a higher focus point: Sony a5000 or Canon T6?

The Sony a5000 has a higher focus point count which is 25 while that of the Canon T6 is just 9. However, the focus points are not enough and this makes it very easy for a photography subject to fall out of focus which can ruin the quality of work.

In the first place, Sony isn’t exactly known for its fast autofocus which so many customers have decried. That’s not about to change in this entry-level camera though and we’re pretty sure you didn’t expect it to, yeah?

The Canon T6 is even worse with only 9 focus points. This can be quite limiting in a number of ways and most advanced cameras these days do not even come with anything remotely close to barely 9 focus points.

So, here are the challenges with the so few focus points of these cameras. Firstly, they make it quite slow for your camera to autofocus which can be anything from mildly to very frustrating.

Also, for scenes where there are sudden, fast, and constant movements, fewer focus points can make your job of taking photos or videos quite difficult.

But then again, we doubt that anyone getting either of these cameras is looking to do anything hardcore in any of those photography genres so that’s fine.

Where a few focus points don’t present a problem is in genres like portrait and landscape. In such categories, since there are no movements, fewer focus points are not a problem. In fact, they can be a blessing as they allow you to manually set your focus quite easily.

Dynamic Range

What is the dynamic range of Sony a5000 and Canon T6?

The Sony a5000 has a dynamic range of 13 while Canon T6 has a dynamic range of 11.7. The dynamic range of both cameras is considered to be in the same bracket. This camera feature tells you how well it would cope outdoors when it’s sunny.

In cameras with a low dynamic range, details are usually lost to the shadows and highlights. So, in order to get the best of your photos outdoors in the sun, it’s good to get a camera with a good dynamic range. Think of something between 12 and 15.

That’s a little poor and so the Sony a5000 would produce better pictures in the sunny outdoors than the Canon T6. But then again, the Canon T6 has a “Sunny” setting in its menu options as well.

Get the Sony a5000 here!          Get the Canon T6 here!

Low FPS Continuous Shooting

Which comes with a low FPS continuous shooting mode: Sony a5000 or Canon T6?

Both the Sony a5000 and the Canon T6 come with a low continuous shooting mode. The Sony a5000 comes with a continuous shooting feature of 4 frames per second while the Canon T6 comes with a continuous shooting feature of 3 frames per second.

This low continuous shooting feature could be a bit of a liability if you’re shooting in scenes where things happen so quickly, you can’t depend on any of these cameras. But then again, you’re probably not considering these cameras if you’re into such kinds of photography so that’s fine.

That said, there’s nothing that says you can’t use the continuous shooting feature for other kinds of shooting. Whether it’s taking pictures of the moment at family occasions or weddings, you can always make use of the limited continuous features of these cameras.

1920 x 1080 Video Resolution

What is the video resolution of the Sony a5000 and the Canon T6?

Both the Sony a5000 and Canon T6 shoot in full HD. Although this is expected given their market value and shooting in full HD makes the video quality of both cameras super impressive.

With the popularity of 4K these days, you might want to feel let-down by the lack of 4K shooting. However, entry-level cameras or not, full HD is a pretty popular format to be shooting in.

Even among professionals, most shoot in full HD. Only very few shoot in 4K right now as 4K is quite demanding.

It requires a fast processing computer which can cost hundreds of dollars to make the upgrade if you don’t already have it. Besides editing the video would require some skills that the beginner might not have right now.

That said, it’s quite possible to upgrade your full HD video into 4K if it ever comes down to it. Even though it might not match up to 4K in video quality, it would serve for most occasions. We said all this to say that you won’t be missing out on much working with full HD video rather than 4K.

To the actual comparison of the Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 in video quality. These two cameras do okay video-wise. Of course, the video quality won’t blow your mind or anything.

But for day-to-day videography, these cameras work. Focusing is a little less than par on the Canon T6 though but altogether, these cameras are good.

If you are looking for topnotch audio quality, then none of these cameras deliver on that count.

They do not have a jack for an external mic which means you’d have to depend on the internal mic but it’s sufficient for regular, day-to-day videos. So that’s fine.

Get the Sony a5000 here!          Get the Canon T6 here!

No Image Stabilization

Which has the image stabilization feature: the Sony a5000 or Canon T6?

Both the Sony a5000 and Canon T6 do not have the image stabilization feature. Image stabilization is a vital feature when considering cameras as it helps to prevent the blur that could occur from involuntary camera shake.

Sony is mostly known for sensor-shift image stabilization and we are looking at 5-axis, by the way. This would have involved the detection of camera shake by the accelerometer.

After detecting this, the accelerometer then causes the sensor to shift in the direction of the shake which prompts the stabilization.

Now, providing you don’t intend to use long lenses on your camera, you won’t have too many problems with the absence of an image stabilization system.

Also, if you’re working on a tripod or any other form of the rig, image stabilization is hardly ever an issue. And if you desperately need it, you can always get IS lenses which is your only way out.

Obviously that would amount to more expenses from you. But then again take into account the extra gear you’d be carrying. It doesn’t exactly make for lighter traveling.

Get the Sony a5000 here!          Get the Canon T6 here!

No Weather Sealing

Which has weather-sealing: Sony a5000 or Canon T6?

Both the Sony a5000 and Canon T6 do not have a weather-sealed body. The absence of this feature makes the two cameras fragile and susceptible to environmental hazards.

Weather-sealing a camera means that it would be able to withstand the occasional wind, moisture, or all such things that could come from using your camera outdoors.

With rubber protecting the vulnerable parts of the camera as well as the buttons, the durability of the camera is greatly assured.

Usually, camera manufacturers weather-seal their cameras to keep them protected from elements.

Plus, there’s also the deterioration that comes from using your camera continuously over a long period of time.

You’d have to really handle the cameras with care and refrain from using them in unsure weather if you really want them to last.

Sony a5000 — What Are The Unique Features?

The following are the unique features of the Sony a5000:

1. Mirrorless Camera

2. Anti-Aliasing Filter

Mirrorless Camera

Yes, we’ve been comparing a mirrorless camera with a DSLR camera all along in case you didn’t pick it up initially. The Sony a5000, unlike the Canon T6, does not come with a mirror.

Now, usually, with the absence of a mirror, a mirrorless camera would come with an electronic viewfinder. However, in the case of the Sony a5000, the camera does not come with any viewfinder at all.

As you know, the viewfinder is that part of the camera through which you see the subject you’re capturing at that moment. Unlike with optical viewfinders, electronic viewfinders would show you the image as the camera sees it.

So, whatever you see on the viewfinder is the way the resulting image would appear. And then you can make any adjustments you want.

Without a viewfinder, your only other option is to work with your LCD screen which is just awkward. Holding up the LCD screen to your eyes to take a photo is just weird. But then again, you can decide to spend a little extra and instead get a viewfinder. It’s really up to you.

Typically, mirrorless cameras are lighter than DSLR cameras which is the same in the Sony a5000 vs Canon T6. The Sony a5000 weighs about 265 grams which is pretty light for a camera. This is a camera you can easily move around.

Anti-Aliasing Filter

Aliasing is an effect photographers love to get rid of because of how it ruins the quality of the image. This mostly occurs when taking photos of fabrics.

Especially in older model cameras with sensors that are not advanced, it can be difficult to tell similar frequencies apart.

So, when the sensor can’t tell these similar and recurring frequencies apart, they tend to blend the frequencies together which causes moire to form. That moire is what you want to get rid of, ergo the anti-aliasing filter.

The AA filter when added to the camera causes a slight blur in the details. With this, the sensor is better able to tell the repeating frequencies apart so this reduces the chances of a moire forming.

These days, higher-priced cameras tend to have a wide range of frequencies. So, they hardly need to use AA filters. On their own, they can tell the similar frequencies apart.

But just before you jump into such cameras especially if you’re into fabric photography, know that camera manufacturers are still working on these cameras. Everything is not picture-perfect yet. So, if you do decide to get a camera, go for one with an AA filter for now.

If you don’t do fabric photography, it’s better not to get cameras with AA filters. This is because they tend to reduce image sharpness when used.

Canon T6 — What Are The Unique Features?

The following is a unique feature of Canon T6:

Optical Viewfinder

Optical Viewfinder

Optical viewfinders might be old school but everyone knows that DSLR cameras are still leading the race when it comes to image quality.

Optical viewfinders offer you an unadulterated view of the subject you’re capturing. It’s almost like you’re looking through an open window. You’re simply seeing the subject and its environment as they occur naturally. There’s little to no variation in what you’re seeing.

Besides this, another benefit of optical viewfinders is that they don’t depend on technology or batteries to work. So, typically, they last longer. Comparing the two cameras, you find that the Canon T6 lasts longer than the Sony a5000.

Plus, whatever the light condition, optical viewfinders pretty much the same way. On the other hand, an electronic viewfinder would be affected by bright light.

OVFs might not display as much information as an EVF but they do display some indicators like focus points and framing guides.

Being a DSLR camera, it’s might not be the best pick for action scenes that require fast movements and the likes.

This is because of the blackout these cameras usually face at the moment the mirror lifts to send the light to the sensor. Faster shutter speeds help though if you’re going to be shooting such scenes with DSLR, then you’ll need to do a bit of practice.

Generally, DSLR cameras require some practice to get used to, unlike mirrorless cameras. For instance, you’d need to understand metering modes and things like that.

But then we observed that Canon tried to make things easier for the new folks. This camera is not just smaller, it’s also easier to operate as Canon has marked all the buttons and simplified to the menu as well.

Sony a5000 And Canon T6 – What Do People Think About Both?

Sony a5000

Canon T6

We went looking through the market to find out what users actually feel about the camera and here’s what we found.

Of course, naturally, the price was the first attraction for most people. It was a camera that many went for the sake of getting a lightweight, inexpensive, interchangeable lens camera. And we also found a lot of people using the Sony a5000 as a travel camera for day-to-day photography and videography use.

To picture quality, it was mostly commendations for the Sony a5000. Especially when people worked with the apps, they found that the camera produced amazing picture quality.

As for video recording quality, the video was great. However, there came a small problem when it came to audio. The Sony a5000 does not come with an external microphone jack so it somewhat affected the sound quality for many users.

And on video, there was the isolated complaint of not being able to record for more than 30 minutes at a time as a result of overheating which some customers experienced. Said user had to stop mid-film, cool off the camera, and then restart. As we said, it was an isolated complaint, but you might want to watch out for that.

Generally, the Sony a5000 was received and acknowledged as a great camera. However, it was mostly used for casual, day-to-day photography. It was sort of understood that the camera wasn’t for any serious, hi-tech kind of shoot.
As for the Canon T6, it was much love as well. Many people loved their camera. For some users, this was their first-ever DSLR camera and the experience was pretty good.

Just as with the Sony a5000, the first attraction of the Canon T6 was its price. Especially for a DSLR, this camera came in at a price that truly knocked the socks off many users. It was just too sweet a deal to pass up.

And when the camera arrived, it was easy to operate as well. If you know anything about DSLRs, they are typically quite difficult to work with for beginners. But users found the Canon T6 quite easy to use amazingly.

We did notice a few complaints though about the lenses of this camera. If the comments of most users are anything to go by, then you might have to change them out pretty soon. The camera body is great. However, there was a small challenge when it came to the lenses.

Also, just like the Sony a5000, the Canon T6 does not come with a jack for an external microphone. In some cases, the built-in mic is good enough, but in most cases, it was a problem. Some users had to record using a different device and then try to sync with the video while editing.

Altogether though, for the most part, users were happy campers. They loved their camera and the picture quality they got.

Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 – Conclusion

These are two amazing cameras, no doubt – the Sony a5000 and the Canon T6. They are both, affordable, lightweight, and good quality interchangeable lens cameras from top camera makers.

Right now, we are here to declare our ultimate winner in the Sony a5000 vs Canon T6 debate. We love these two cameras but if we had to go with just one camera, it would have to be the Sony a5000.

The Canon T6 is great. However, it just doesn’t compare to the Sony a5000. In fact, if you love Canon and you must absolutely do Canon, then we’d advise you to spare a couple of extra bucks and go for the Canon T6i instead.

The Canon T6i is also a DSLR camera but the upgrades on that camera are just so lit!  You really need to check it out.

The Sony a5000 is an amazing camera and on many counts beats the Canon T6. The only advantage we could probably say the Canon T6 has over the Sony a5000 is that it’s a DSLR which, of course, produces better picture quality than mirrorless cameras.

Other than that, the features on the Sony a5000 are way better than those on the Canon T6 and would be our pick between the Sony a5000 vs Canon T6.
