Comparison Overview — Sony a9 vs a7RII

First of all, one thing has to be said – this Sony a9 vs a7RII battle is a really close one. Though these cameras were announced 2 years apart, they happen to have quite a number of similar features.

The Sony a9 was announced by Sony on the 19th of April, 2017, while the Sony A7RII was announced 2 years earlier on the 10th of June, 2015. The latter was later replaced by the Sony A7RIII which was released in the same year as the a9. If you would like to see how the a9 and the A7RIII match up, check it out here.

Now, back to the Sony a9 vs a7RII comparison. These two cameras are obviously made by the same company – Sony.

This is one company that has been able to build a trustworthy brand name in the US and all over the world. So, one can be pretty confident that, being made by Sony, these 2 cameras are bound to be really functional.

Well, yes, they are indeed functional. And not only that, they are really convenient, too. However, being the only one with a touch screen, the Sony a9 only slightly edges the a7RII in the aspect of convenience.

Also, the Sony a9 has a better battery capacity than the a7RII. At full charge of the a9’s battery, you get more than 100 per cent more shots than you get with a full charge of that of the Sony a7RII.

Now, this is not to say that the a7RII is absolutely inferior to the a9. In fact, with the a7RII, you will be getting 75 per cent more pixels in maximum sensor resolution than you will with the a9, which means bigger prints and more detail in your photos.

Which has the better price-value ratio: a9 or a7RII?

The Sony a7RII is way more affordable than the a9. You will be saving more than 1000 USD if you opt for this camera. And although the a9 comes with more features and is probably the better camera, we don’t think they are enough to sacrifice an extra 1000 bucks. Therefore, we think the a7RII will be giving you better value for price.

Mirrorless Cameras

Now, before we take any further step in comparing these two cameras, it is important that we fully understand what type of cameras they are.

So, we have already mentioned that both these cameras are mirrorless cameras. A mirrorless camera is a camera that does not have – or need – a mirror. Lol, that was pretty obvious, wasn’t it?

Well, in addition to that, mirrorless cameras never come with optical viewfinders. Now, the cameras that come with these 2 features – mirrors and optical viewfinders – are called the digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras.

Because of its reflex design, a DSLR camera (also known as mirrored camera) needs a mirror and an optical viewfinder. Basically, how it works is that light is captured by the camera’s lens and is then sent to the mirror which then sends it to the camera’s sensors and the optical viewfinder. This is where the images can be framed.

But with mirrorless cameras, there is no reflex design, and so, the light goes straight from the lens to the electronic viewfinder or the LCD screen.

Now, the electronic viewfinder, just like the optical viewfinder, is also used to frame photos, however, they both work in pretty different ways.

Well, if you are interested in finding out what the differences are between an optical viewfinder and an electronic viewfinder, the video below will help you with that.

It tells you what results to expect from each of these viewfinders and explains how it affects your photography.  Check it out here!

Pro Cameras

So, this is another category that these 2 cameras we are comparing – Sony a9 vs a7RII – fall under – pro cameras.

If you guessed that pro cameras are professional cameras, then you are definitely right. Pro cameras are basically cameras that are used by professionals. Yes, it is as simple as that.

This category of cameras are made to better withstand intense usage, and are generally more expensive than other categories of cameras – semi-pro and entry-level cameras.

So, now that we know the basic similarities that exist between these cameras, we can now go on to discuss those features that appear in both of them.

Common Features — Sony a9 vs a7RII

Here are the features common to both the Sony a9 and a7RII:

i. Electronic viewfinder

ii. Articulating screen

iii. Face detection focus

iv. External flash hot shoe

v. Auto exposure bracketing

vi. Weather sealing

vii. External microphone jack

viii. Headphone jack

ix. RAW support

x. Image stabilization

xi. Built-in Wi-Fi

xii. Near field communication

xiii. HDMI output

Let us now examine each of these features in detail…

Electronic Viewfinder

Being mirrorless cameras, each of these cameras – Sony a9 vs a7rII – is qualified to have an electronic viewfinder.

It should be noted, though, that not every mirrorless camera comes with this feature. Some just make do with the LCD screens.

Now, the electronic viewfinder helps you frame your photos and have even more control of your shooting. In your electronic viewfinder, you can see your camera’s battery level, ISO, histogram, and a couple of other relevant information.

Already, in this Sony a9 vs a7rII comparison article, we have shown you how useful an electronic viewfinder can be. So, in case you missed it, you can go back to the video we attached earlier in this article.

Articulating Screen

An articulating screen is a type of LCD screen that can be flipped or rotated to help you be able to take photos or record videos from difficult angles.

The articulating screen (also known as flip out screen) also helps you take great selfies. And seeing as the screen of both these cameras flip upward, as well as downward, both of them are great for vlogging.

Face Detection Focus

With this feature, your camera is able to recognize human faces and focus on them. This is an awesome feature for when you want to take portrait photographs.

For a good portrait, your camera should be able to capture sufficient detail on the face, and this is just exactly what you get with these cameras because of the face detection focus feature.

External Flash Hot Shoe

Well, if you do not know what a hot shoe is, it is simply a feature atop your camera’s viewfinder. It is where you mount an external flash – if you want to.

Now, an external flash can be very useful when you want to do flash photography, and also for when you want to get some form of good lighting from your camera.

More so, seeing as none of these cameras we are comparing today – Sony a9 vs a7rII – comes with an internal flash, the external flash hot shoe becomes an even more important feature.

So, if you are an events photographer, you would love that these cameras come with this feature.

You know, you won’t always have the luxury of perfect lighting like you might have in your studio. So, an external flash will be doing you a whole lot of good.

Auto Exposure Bracketing

Now, further speaking on perfect lighting and how elusive it can be, this is yet another feature that will be very useful in such conditions.

What this feature does is that it helps you capture an image in 3 or more different exposure settings, leaving you to decide which you most prefer.

This feature is really cool, useful, and extremely easy to use. If you want to find out how to use is, the video below should help you.

This video shows you how and when to use the auto exposure bracketing feature on your Sony a7RII .

Furthermore, this feature on the a7RII comes with a special self-timer, and you will also be seeing how that works in this video. Check it out!

Weather Sealing

Have you ever wondered why it is okay to use some cameras in any and every condition, but it isn’t with others? Well, here is the reason – weather sealing.

Weather sealing is what keeps your camera from being destroyed – by the weather, of course.

If your camera does not come with this feature, it would be extremely risky to use it outdoors when the weather starts acting funny.

And imagine having to shield your camera from the weather as a wildlife or sports photographer. That might cost you the best moments.

Well, thankfully, with each of these cameras – Sony a9 vs a7rII – you get the weather sealing. And thus, they are safe to be used outdoors in literally whatever weather condition.

Microphone Jack

So, let’s say you are a journalist on the red carpet of one of the biggest events in the country. And you are supposed to do an interview on celebrities and influential people right there.

First of all, there is such a high likelihood that that would be a really noisy place. But well, your job has to be done, anyway.

And one of the most important keys to doing a great job is making sure every word said is recorded and can be heard. So, in plain terms – great sound.

Sincerely, your camera’s in-built microphone won’t always give you that great sound that you so desire.  And in that scenario we painted, it most likely wouldn’t.

What you need is an external microphone to get that high quality sound you need, even in really noisy areas.

The microphone jack is the feature that indicates that your camera can support an external microphone, and thus, enhance the quality of sound you can get from your camera.

So, with either of these cameras – Sony a9 vs a7rII – you can go to that red carpet, get good quality audio on your interviews, and thus, do an amazing job. Isn’t that just so great?

Headphone Jack

Further on videos, a pair of headphones gives you more control of your recording. It helps you regulate the sound your camera is picking up.

Therefore, your camera coming with a headphone jack means that you can connect those headphones, and be in complete control of your audio recordings. Amazing!

RAW Support

This feature suggests that your camera allows you to take photos in the RAW format. RAW is the format which gives you the highest quality images.

This is because – unlike JPEG – RAW leaves your images uncompressed and unadulterated. And hey, who does not want their images in their highest uncompressed quality, right?

Furthermore, having their photos and videos in this uncompressed format allows photographers use them on really large scales – scales as large as billboards and documentaries.

Image stabilization

Taking pictures at events involves a lot of movement, trying to capture all the beautiful moments; because, as the photographer, that’s what you were paid to do.

So, as you move up and down with your camera in hand, it is nearly impossible for your hands to always stay steady while you take pictures or record videos.

And if you have ever taken pictures or recorded videos with a camera – or even a smartphone – you would have noticed that these movements usually have big effects on the outlook of the images.

This is not the fault of the photographer, it is a nearly inevitable occurrence for your hands to not shake for the entire period of the recordings.

This is why companies who produce cameras now make them with this amazing feature – image stabilization.

This feature is present in many Pro cameras out there now, and those cameras include the 2 we are discussing in this article today – Sony a9 vs a7rII.

With this feature in your camera, the effect those shakes and movements would normally have on your images are reduced to the barest minimum.

Therefore, you can now go on with your shooting and be sure to get smooth flowing recordings and clear images.

Wi-Fi Connection And Near Field Communication (NFC)

These cameras – Sony a9 vs a7rII – are Wi-Fi enabled. And this means that you can easily connect another Wi-Fi enabled device and do a smooth transfer of files.

The Wi-Fi works hand in hand with the near field communication (NFC) technology. So, you can quickly connect your camera to any compatible device nearby and do what you need to do.

This is obviously a whole lot more convenient than having to go look for a USB cord to connect your camera to another device and do a transfer.

Wi-Fi and NFC guarantee you a faster and more convenient wireless transfer of files. Also, with this, uploading your images to the internet is made even easier and faster.

Furthermore, another advantage you get with these features is smartphone remote control. This is what helps you do a shoot even when you are meters away from your camera.

So, you can use your smartphone as your camera’s screen and do all you would normally do with your camera.

This is a great advantage for you if you are a wildlife photographer, for example. Your presence in the scene might really cost you that great photo, or make you miss the actual story.

Therefore, being able to conduct a remote controlled shooting definitely makes everything just great.

You can place your camera at a good angle and get your good images using your smartphone from a few meters away.

If you want to find out how to use the Wi-Fi and NFC to do a remote controlled shooting, the video below would show you.

Here, you will see how you can connect your camera (Sony a7 series) to your smartphone and with it (your smartphone) do a remote controlled shooting. It’s pretty easy; check it out!

HDMI Output

This is the feature that shows you that you can connect your camera to a larger screen – a monitor or tv screen.

And you can easily do this by plugging in your HDMI cord to this feature – the HDMI output – and then to the screen on which you want to view your images on.

Unique Features — Sony a9 vs a7rII

Touch Screen

In this time and age, a touch screen is one thing that has become very ubiquitous in technological devices.

There are touch screen phones, touch screen tablets, touch screen computers, and even touch screen fridges.

So, with virtually all devices being touch screen, it is really not out of place that cameras are, too.

A touch screen makes it a whole lot easier for you to access and control the functions of that device – in this case, a camera.

Anyway, of these two cameras in comparison today – Sony a9 vs a7rII – you will only be able to get this touch screen feature with the Sony a9.

What this, therefore, means is that you will be getting a little more convenience in this area of accessing camera functions with the a9 than you will be with the a7RII.

Built-In Bluetooth

In addition to your camera’s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth offers you an even wider range of wireless connectivity. With Bluetooth, you are able to send photos and videos to nearby compatible devices, without having to connect any wires.

Furthermore, there are a lot of devices out there that are not Wi-Fi enabled, but they have Bluetooth. Therefore, it is safe to say that Bluetooth further broadens your wireless connectivity.

Anyway, of these two cameras – Sony a9 vs a7rII – this feature can only be found in the Sony a9.

PC Sync Port For Flash

This is a feature that is not very common among cameras, so, it is not so much of a surprise that it cannot be found in the Sony a7RII.

Now, in the Sony a9, the PC sync port sits somewhere on the side of your camera, and it allows you connect a special type of external flash.

So, while you have the regular external flash that you can connect to your camera by mounting on the hot shoe above the viewfinder, there is yet another type.

This flash has a couple of advantages over the regular external flash, so, you could say it is indeed some form of advanced source of lighting.

Although this flash is also mounted on the external flash hot shoe, it has to first be connected to the PC sync port for it to provide lighting.

Well, seeing as this is a feature that cannot be found in a lot of cameras out there, we thought it really important to show you how this feature can be used on the Sony a9 (and cameras in the Sony a7 series that come with it).

In this video, you will be seeing the kind of flash that can be used with the PC sync port, and the advantages it has over your regular external flash. Check it out!

Unique Pros — Sony a9 vs a7rII

Which has a touch screen: a9 or a7RII?

The Sony a9 comes with a touch screen while the a7RII does not. This, therefore, means that the a9 will be affording you a little more convenience of use than its counterpart. With a touch screen, you are saved the stress of having to look for the right button to use to focus, to do a transfer, and all of that. You basically just have to tap on your screen. That is so cool!

Which has the faster continuous shooting: a9 or a7RII?

The Sony a9 boasts of a 20 frames per second speed on continuous shooting, which is 4 times faster than that of the a7RII. Now, the burst mode (continuous shooting) of your camera is simply its ability to continually take a series of photos without stop. This is useful, especially when you want to take photos of a moving object or person. Well, from this overly simplified definition, you sure can already tell that a fast burst mode is always best.

So, if you are a wildlife photographer, sports photographer, paparazzo, or your job generally requires that you “capture the moment”, then a fast burst mode will be a very important requirement in your camera.

Which has the larger buffer: a9 or a7RII?

The buffer of the Sony a9 can hold up to 364 shots when shooting JPEG in burst mode, and 240 shots when shooting RAW. What this means is that, while shooting on burst mode with your Sony a9, you won’t have to take a pause until you have taken up to 364 shots (JPEG) or 240 shots (RAW).

Now, the buffer is a place where images are stored temporarily – while shooting on burst mode – as they are being transferred to the memory card or external storage.

So, while you are shooting on burst mode, if the buffer gets full, you will have to take a pause before you restart your continuous shooting. That pause, you must have figured out, is to let your camera empty its buffer, so as to take in more shots.

And, too frequent pauses, as a result of a small buffer, might be really frustrating. So, a camera with a large buffer is always much appreciated.

Anyway, how many shots your camera’s buffer can take is also dependent on the size of the images you are capturing.

This is why your buffer will be able to take more shots when you are shooting on JPEG than when you will be shooting on RAW.

A lasting battery is something that is very important for photographers, especially in a pro camera. No one wants a camera with a battery that easily dies on them. The battery of this camera will be giving you 360 more shots per full charge than that of the a7RII.

Which is better for flash photography: a9 or a7RII?

In flash photography, the Sony a9 will be doing better than the a7RII. It comes with a PC sync port which allows you connect off-camera flashes in addition to the hot shoe on which you can mount an external flash.

Which has better focusing: a9 or a7RII?

Better focusing by your camera almost automatically means sharper images. And with as many as 693 focus points, the Sony a9 will be giving you great focusing, and thus, sharp images. As a matter of fact, with the a9, you get 294 more focus points than you will be getting with the a7RII.

Which offers more external storage: a9 or a7RII?

The Sony a9 offers you slots for 2 memory cards, while the a7RII offers you just one slot. And of course, that extra storage space is definitely always preferred.

Which allows you take panoramic images: a9 or a7RII?

The Sony a7RII, unlike the a9, is able to put a couple of photos into a beautiful panorama. This is really cool, and one way photographers further express their creativity.

Which has the higher maximum sensor resolution: a9 or a7RII?

With the a7RII, you get 42 mega pixels in maximum sensor resolution. This is actually pretty impressive, and in fact, is 75 percent higher than what you get with the a9. And of course, the higher the resolution, the better the quality of images. Your camera’s maximum sensor resolution really does go a long way in determining the quality of images it can produce.

Which is more affordable: a9 or a7RII?

Unique Cons — Sony a9 vs a7rII

Unique Cons Of The Sony a9

i. It has a pretty average maximum sensor resolution.

ii. It is expensive.

Average Maximum Sensor Resolution

For a Pro camera, photographers really did expect more than the 24 mega pixels they got with the a9. It really could have been better.

To make it even clearer, the a9 offers you 75 per cent less pixels in maximum sensor resolution than the a7RII. This goes a long way to tell you that it indeed could have been better with the a9.

High End

It is indeed safe to say that the Sony a9 is pretty far from affordable. Even though it gives pretty good value, the price might still be a problem for some.

Unique Cons Of The Sony a7RII

i. It does not have a touch screen.

ii. It is slow in continuous shooting.

iii. It has a small buffer.

No Touch Screen

Without a touch screen, it is quite a hassle trying to find the right buttons to use on the Sony a7RII. This makes the camera not as convenient as it should be.

The convenience a touch screen camera offers can really not be overemphasized. And indeed, photographers would have loved if the a7RII was a touch screen camera.

Slow Burst Mode

To be sincere, even for a Semi-Pro camera, 5 frames per second on burst mode is slow. It is safe to say that we – and probably every other camera lover in the world – were disappointed by this.

With 5 frames per second, you might be missing some really great photos of moving objects. Not good.

Small Buffer

We already know that a large buffer helps you take a lot more shots on burst mode before having to wait. And that, in turn, helps you capture more amazing images of objects on the move.

This is why a small buffer will be pretty disappointing for literally any photographer shooting on burst mode.

So, the 23 shots you get with the Sony a7RII’s buffer (on both JPEG and RAW) definitely does not make many people very happy.

First of all, it is so not easy to find a Pro camera that gives amazing results, and is still remotely affordable.
