Sony a7S Vs D750 – Comparison Overview

Here’s a quick rundown:

Overall Rating Of The Sony a7S Vs D750

Both cameras are good cameras in their own right and we believe either of the cameras could meet your camera needs. However, each camera has what we could call their niche.

For the Sony a7S, it is video recording. We know that it is a camera and so its primary focus will be taking photos but it is seems to be better at recording videos than it is at taking photos.

On the other hand, the Nikon D750 takes good pictures. The sensor resolution is pretty impressive, twice as good as that of the Sony a7S, so you’ll be able to take good photos.

Rating Of The Features Of The Sony a7S Vs D750

As we earlier pointed out, the Sony a7S takes really good videos and that is because of its video resolution (3840 by 2160). This camera has a couple of other things working for it like its really impressive ISO range (100 to 409600), its shutter speed (1/8000s versus 1/4000s) and its NFC connection.

On the other hand, the Nikon D750 takes better pictures and that is because of its 24 megapixel sensor resolution which is twice that of the Sony a7S.

Some other things this camera has working for it include its battery life (1230 vs 360 shots), its extra storage slot, its screen size (3.2 as against 3 inches) and the fact that it can time lapse record.

Nonetheless, both cameras share a number of common features like the inbuilt wireless connection, the articulating screen, microphone port, headphone port and weather sealing. Also, not very impressively, both cameras do not have the in body image stabilization feature.

Price/Value Ratio – Sony a7S Vs D750

Will you get value for your money with either camera? Well, both cameras were first released in 2014 and we believe it the price was valid then. However, while both cameras are really impressive cameras and you will actually get good value for what you pay for, we still believe both cameras could go for a bit less.

About The Brands

Sony

As a Japanese conglomerate, Sony has been able to spread its tentacles into the entertainment, electronics and even gaming industry. And while its entertainment branch is probably its most popular, its cameras have gained quite a popularity in the camera market, especially for its quality.

Nikon

Nikon, on the other hand, is a more specific brand. It only has products in the imaging and optics sector. This strategy seems to be working for it as its products have come to be known for its quality.

Sony a7S Vs D750 – Common Features

The idea of this section is to see exactly how similar the Sony a7S and the D750 are. Hence, this section contains those features that you will find in both cameras; some exactly the same and some others slightly different.

1. Wireless Connection

Both the Sony a7S and the Nikon D750 have an inbuilt wireless connection. As a result, they can both gain access to the internet, allowing you wirelessly transfer files from the camera to an online location. You’ll also be able to download useful apps from the internet.

In addition to this, both cameras can be controlled from a smartphone. Well of course, said smartphone has to be connected to said camera. So, you’ll need to download the right app on your smartphone and then make the connection.

Once that connection is established, you can make changes to the settings and even take some trial shots from the smartphone.

2. Articulating Screen

If you’ve ever used a camera with an articulating screen, you’d understand how it could contribute to the entire creativity process. An articulating screen is that kind of screen that can be turned and moved in certain directions without having to move the camera body.

There are basically two kinds of articulating screen. The tilting screen can only be turned upward and then back down. However, the angles to which it can reach differ from camera to camera.

On the other hand is the full-flex articulating screen. This kind of screen can actually be rotated such that the screen faces the opposite direction. Cameras with this kind of screen are usually favored by people who do a lot of recording of themselves by themselves.

Now that all that is cleared, you need to know that both the Sony a7S and the Nikon D750 have a tilting screen. So, while you won’t be able to turn it all the way around, you’ll be able to use it to get some interesting shots from different angles.

Allow us quickly point out, though, that while both cameras have a tilting screen that isn’t touch sensitive, the size differs slightly. The Sony a7S has a 3 inch screen while the Nikon D750 has a 3.2 inch screen. The difference might not be very noticeable, though.

3. Viewfinder

A viewfinder is that little screen-like thing that you look through when you try to take a picture. The basic idea of the viewfinder is for you to see what your camera sees and make adjustments where necessary.

By looking at your subject through the viewfinder, you’ll be able to know if the lighting is alright, if the subject is properly positioned and all that stuff. Then of course, you can adjust as necessary.

That said, there are two kinds of viewfinders: the optical which you’ll find in a DSLR and the electronic which you will find with some mirrorless cameras. There’s a fundamental difference between the optical and the electronic viewfinder and we’ll explain.

An optical viewfinder is kinda like a window. What we mean is that images appear on the viewfinder the way they appear to the naked eye. The little issue with this is that this is not a very clear representation of how photos will appear.

Photos taken with a camera are digital and definitely do not look the same as what the naked eye sees. However, this does not mean that the optical viewfinder offers you a bad representation. Plus, the optical viewfinder doesn’t use battery power.

On the other hand, the electronic viewfinder gives a really close representation of what the sensor sees. That is, what you see on the electronic viewfinder is a digital image and not exactly the subject as it appears to the naked eye.

However, the electronic viewfinder is not as fast as the optical. There is usually a bit of lag where it waits to receive the digital image from the sensor. We’ll explain this a bit better soon.

But despite the differences, we’ve added this feature to this section because fundamentally, both cameras have a viewfinder.

4. Weather Sealing

While this factor does not necessarily affect the quality of photos, it is definitely a laudable one. A camera that is weather sealed is usually dustproof, water resistant, waterproof, a combination of two or all three. And you’ll be able to use such camera under certain weather elements as opposed to a camera that isn’t weather sealed.

That said, in the case of both the Sony a7S and the Nikon D750, you get both dustproofing and water resistant.

Now, you need to be careful to know that a camera that is water resistant isn’t built to be be fully exposed to water. You definitely do not want to take this camera diving or even swimming. A little bit of water splash or dust might not affect either camera negatively, though.

5. Microphone Port

A good number of cameras have an inbuilt microphone. These cameras have been designed to not just take photos but also record videos. However, that inbuilt microphone hasn’t impressed a lot of people.

Apparently, the inbuilt microphone records more than the specific sounds you want it to and that isn’t a good thing. The inbuilt microphone usually ends up catching too much background noise. This is the reason some camera manufacturers have decided to attach a microphone port to their cameras.

Both the Sony a7S and the Nikon D750 have an external microphone port. As a result, you can get an external microphone that can record good quality audio and block out noise.

6. Headphone Port

Just like a good number of cameras have an inbuilt microphone, a good number of them also have an inbuilt speaker. After all, when you record videos you’ll be able to playback and listen to your recording, hence, the inbuilt stereo.

However, this inbuilt stereo doesn’t give you the best playback quality. This is why some cameras like the Sony a7S and the Nikon D750 have a headphone port. You can attach your headphones to either camera and enjoy good quality audio.

7. Continuous Shooting

The continuous shooting mode allows a camera to take shots as fast as possible. That is, the camera is able to take more than one shot in one second and with just one click of the shutter button.

In addition to a high number of focus points, a high continuous shooting rate makes a camera good for shooting in places where there will be a lot of movement. It could be at a sports event, out in the wild or even at a toddler’s photoshoot (toddlers move around a lot, wouldn’t you agree?

That said, the Sony a7S and the Nikon D750 do not have the exact same continuous shooting rate, however, it is close enough. With the Sony a7S you can get 5 frames per second while the Nikon D750 offers 6.5 frames per second. And while neither camera is exactly a speed beast, they do try.

8. Flash Shoe

Lighting is a very important factor to getting the right picture and a flash is a camera’s quick fix for a poor light situation. Some cameras have an inbuilt flash, however, both these cameras have a flash shoe.

The flash shoe is a provision for you to attach an external flash which is a better low light solution than an inbuilt flash. Additionally, the external flash will come in handy if you need to do something like flash photography.

9. RAW Support

RAW is one of the two formats that photos can take. The other is the jpeg that is not really favored by professionals. And the reason is that, while jpeg photos do not take up so much space, they are usually not of the best quality.

RAW photos, on the other hand, retain their original quality, hence, why people who do somewhat professional photography prefer this format. However, bear in mind that this kind of photo is heavy and takes up a bit of space. And yes, both cameras allow for this format.

10. Face Detection

A camera that has a face detection feature can not only detect faces but also lock on them. This helps to better focus the sensor when you want to snap faces, thereby reducing the possibility of blur. That said, both the Sony a7S and the Nikon D750 have this feature, making both of them good portrait cameras.

Sony a7S Vs D750 – Unique Features

In this section, we’ll be seeing how different the cameras are from each other. We’ve put together those features you will find in one camera but not the other and also those features you’ll find in both but are very different.

1. Mirrorless Vs DSLR

This difference is very fundamental as it affects the way both cameras operate. The Sony a7S is a mirrorless camera while the Nikon D750 is a DSLR. And the basic difference between a mirrorless camera and a DSLR is the absence/presence of a mirror an optical viewfinder.

Here’s how things work. When light passes through a DSLR, it first hits the mirror. It is the mirror that now reflects light onto the optical viewfinder, allowing you see whatever image you are trying to capture. Part of the light from the mirror also goes onto the Autofocus sensor.

On the other hand, light passes through the lens of a mirrorless camera as well. However, because a mirrorless camera doesn’t have a mirror, the light goes straight onto the sensor.

Now, instead of reflecting light, the sensor sends a digital image to the electronic viewfinder or the LCD screen. And this accounts for the basic difference between an optical viewfinder and an electronic one.

Furthermore, because a mirrorless camera does not have a mirror, it is, more often than not, lighter than its DSLR counterpart. The two cameras in this review typify this stance.

2. Weight

As we earlier mentioned, a mirrorless camera almost always weighs lighter than a DSLR. And while this isn’t always the case, the Sony a7S is sure significantly lighter than the Nikon D750.

The Sony a7S weighs 1.08 pounds while the Nikon D750 weighs 1.85 pounds. While the Sony a7S is lighter and smaller than the Nikon D750 and will be easier to transport with you, the Nikon D750 isn’t exactly a heavy or overtly large camera.

However, there is more to the weight of a camera than just the weight of the body. Remember that you’ll be adding lenses to your camera and the lenses are not exactly weight.

Now, depending on the size of one camera’s sensor, it might actually require larger and heavier lenses than the other. In that case, the weight of the lenses might be significant enough to make both cameras weigh the same or make the heavier camera even heavier.

However, you need not worry about that in this case because both cameras have the same size Full Frame sensor. The implication of this is that both cameras will require lenses of the same weight and size for the same aperture and focal length.

3. Sensor Resolution

This one basically tells us how good the photos a camera takes will be; the detailing, the prints and even whether you can crop or not. Of course, it makes sense that a high sensor resolution equals better quality images.

That said, this is one area where the Nikon D750 clearly one ups the Sony a7S. The Nikon D750 offers 24 megapixels of sensor resolution which is really good. You’ll be able to get details on your photo, you can crop if you need to and you can even print large prints.

On the other hand, the Sony a7S offers half the sensor resolution that the Nikon D750 offers. Seriously, this sensor resolution isn’t really impressive. Some phones do better than 12 megapixels.

4. ISO Range

You need to adjust your camera’s light sensitivity; that is, you want it to let in more light or less light, adjust the ISO.

If you need the camera to let in as much light as necessary, it’ll mean that you’re trying to take shots in a place where the light is too poor. In this case, you’ll need to set your camera to a high ISO in which case the camera tries to let in as much light as it can to make up for the lack.

On the other hand, there could be places where the light is just too much like out in the sun. In those cases, you’ll need to set your camera to a low ISO. The camera basically lets in only as much light as is necessary so that your photos are not flooded with light.

The ISO range tells us the upper and lower limits of a camera’s light sensitivity. And you will agree with us that the wider the better for everybody. That said, the Sony a7S very clearly one ups the Nikon D750 in this area.

The ISO range of the Sony a7S is between 100 and 409600 and this is actually pretty wide. In fact, you could make do without using the flash for low light situations.

On the other hand, while the Nikon D750’s ISO range (100 to 12800 and can be expanded to 50 to 51200) isn’t as wide as that of the Sony a7S, it is still pretty impressive.

5. Battery Life

Mirrorless cameras are kinda known for having a not so impressive battery life and the Sony a7S doesn’t do anything to change our minds. In fact, there is a really significant difference between the battery life of the Sony a7S and that of the Nikon D750.

With the Sony a7S, you only get 360 shots per charge. And while we are not exactly impressed by this battery life, we do concede that it could be quite satisfactory for anybody, depending on what you need the camera for. On the other hand, you can get 1230 shots per charge which is really impressive.

6. Near Field Communication Connection

Of the two cameras in this review, only the Sony a7S has the Near Field Communication (NFC) connection feature. This feature allows the Sony a7S connect with other devices that are also NFC enabled. And via this connection, files can be wirelessly transferred from the camera to an off camera device.

7. Inbuilt Flash

We’ve already pointed out that both cameras have a flash shoe to which you can attach an external flash. In addition to that, however, the Nikon D750 has an inbuilt flash. The inbuilt flash is not as good an idea as the external flash but it does have its uses, especially if you happen to leave your external flash somewhere.

8. Top Level LCD Screen

This is a small LCD screen that is located atop the camera. On that small screen, you can make quick adjustments and settings changes. That said, of the two cameras in this review, only the Nikon D75 has this feature.

9. Time Lapse Recording

If you time lapse record, the camera basically records in a lower frequency than it usually would. However, when that video is played back it actually plays faster than a regular video would. This is just a creative kind of video recording and of the two cameras in this review, only the Nikon D750 has this feature.

10. 4k Videos

The Sony a7S does significantly better than the Nikon D750 when it comes to recording videos. They both have good structure what with the microphone port and the headphone port. However, when it comes to actually recording the videos, the Sony a7S has the better resolution.

The Sony a7S has a 3840 by 2160 resolution and this is what 4k video recording is about. This 4k recording is kinda like the cream of the crop when it comes to cameras and their ability to record videos.

Really, it is easier to find an affordable mirrorless that can record 4k videos than it is to find an affordable DSLR that can do same. This is why we are not all that surprised that the Nikon D750’s video resolution is 1920 by 1080.

This is the regular video resolution and isn’t so bad. However, if you want to do some serious video recording, you’d probably prefer a camera that can take 4k videos.

11. Available Lenses

This is somewhere else where the Nikon D750 does better than the Sony a7S. The Nikon D750 has 302 lenses available, 218 of which are full frame while the Sony a7S has 102 lenses available, 59 of which are full frame.

Furthermore, neither camera has an in body image stabilization feature. And as a result, photos snapped could come out looking blurry because the camera was jostled in some way.

However, to take care of this, both the Sony a7S and the Nikon D750 have optical stabilization lenses available to them. The Sony a7S has 23 of them available while the Nikon D750 has 88 of them available.
