Once there is a comparison between a DSLR and a mirrorless camera, you can expect that the result is a very tight contest. At the end of the day, choosing on between these two camera types is down to personal preference. Would that be the same for these two cameras- Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III? Let’s find out.

This article is going to be very informative. However, that comes at a cost. It is going to be quite lengthy. If you don’t have the time to read through this article, check out our comparison overview below. It features a concise summary of what is talked about throughout the article and a comparison of the two brands, Sony and Canon that make the Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III, respectively.

Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III – Comparison Overview

In our opinion, the overall ratings of these two cameras are pretty similar. They are both considered as good cameras in their own rights. And although they’re quite old, they still do a very good job for most people in this time.

Looking at the rating of their features, these two cameras are pretty good at what they do. The Sony a7S comes with 12 megapixels, which is pretty poor for still photography. However, it does shoot 4K video at five frames per second and also comes with an articulating screen that lets you keep videoing from awkward positions.

One thing that people often want to know with whatever they purchase is whether they’re getting value for their money. With both of these cameras, that is sadly something we cannot say expressly. Honestly, for the prices that these cameras come in, we feel like there are better, newer options out there.

However, if you can find used versions of these products, or perhaps a deal or discount that allows you to get it for a cheaper price, then these are good cameras. But we just cannot justify their current retail prices.

Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III – Brand Comparison

The two brands that create these cameras- Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III are Sony and Canon, respectively. Both of these companies do not need an introduction in the camera space. They represent, arguably, the biggest brands in mirrorless and DSLRs, respectively.

Sony saw a chance with the newly emerging mirrorless camera industry and jumped on it. Since then, they’ve grown to be the biggest brand in that industry, leaving Canon to battle it out with Nikon in the DSLR front.

One reason why you should buy either of these cameras over some cheaper options produced by smaller brands is that these brands- Sony and Canon, produce most of the lenses and accessories for cameras. When you use a lens with a camera that is produced by the same company, you are sure to get the best out of that lens, because of compatibility.

There is really not much we can say about these brands as they already speak for themselves. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into the full Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III comparison article!

Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III – What Scenario Is What Camera Best For?

Sony a7S

5D Mark III

Both of these cameras are really good if you’re looking for something that’s affordable but also assures you the quality that the bigger brands do. They’re quite old now, yes. However, what’s age if they still do a good job in this present time? That’s what we thought too.The biggest advantage that getting either of these cameras have over getting newer cameras from lesser brands is that this gets you into the ecosystem.

Once you get into the ecosystem, it’s easy to upgrade to better cameras that are in the same ecosystem because you’ll already be accustomed to the ways of that ecosystem.
This camera is a mirrorless camera. Therefore, it bears all the benefits and none benefits of mirrorless cameras. The biggest of which is their portability and compact style.

If you prefer a smaller camera in a smaller kit, then you would definitely want this camera. If you’re a travel photographer, a blogger, or you cover small events, this is really nice.
This is a DSLR camera. And yes, it’s mechanical, it’s big, and it’s chunky. However, this weight does bear some advantages. If you shoot with really large lenses.

Say you’re a sports or wildlife photographer, we’re sure you won’t like a lightweight camera.

When using the larger lenses, the weight of the DSLR balances the overall weight distribution, keeping the camera steady.
Sony is beginning to produce some really nice lens options for their mirrorless cameras, especially the ones with full-frame sensors.Although Sony is doing its best, there is no doubt that Canon has more options when it comes to lenses and accessories.

Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III – Features Common To Both Cameras

Although these two cameras are different types, produced by different brands, they still have some similar features. In this section of this Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III comparison article, we would be looking at those features that both of these cameras- Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III, possess.

However, because these cameras are very different, even some of these similar features might have different implementations in both of the cameras. We would point them out where they appear.

Viewfinder

Both of these cameras come with a viewfinder. The biggest benefit of a viewfinder is that you can frame your photos perfectly, under any lighting conditions. If your camera does not come with a viewfinder, you would have to depend solely on an LCD screen. That is good when you’re indoors. However, the problem arises when you get outside and the sun is out.

Just like your smartphone and other screens, the LCD screens on cameras are very reflective. Because of that, it’s difficult to see anything on it, when the rays of the sun are bouncing on it.

With an eye-level viewfinder, these problems do not exist. It’s not on the surface. Rather it’s something you look through, so it’s not affected by sunlight. This allows you to frame your photos and focus properly.

The viewfinders of these two cameras- Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III are very different. In fact, whenever the topic of DSLR vs Mirrorless comes up, the debate between these two viewfinder types immediately follows suit.

The Sony a7s comes with an electronic viewfinder, while the Canon 5D Mark III comes with an optical (pentaprism) viewfinder. Because these are really different, we would be discussing them one after the other.

Electronic Viewfinder

In a mirrorless camera, there is no mirror or pentaprism. The light that enters into the camera goes straight to the electronic sensor. This sensor then converts that light into a digital image. This digital image is transmitted to a small display you can see by looking into the electronic viewfinder.

Electronic viewfinders need power to work, so your camera has to be turned on while you’re using this feature. All mirrorless cameras also come with an LCD screen. With this LCD screen, you can also view the frame you’re trying to capture.

Some mirrorless cameras come with a button that helps you switch between the viewfinder and the LCD screen. Others, however, go farther to make that automatic. Automatic in the sense that, once your eye gets close to the electronic viewfinder, it comes on.

Optical Viewfinder

The DSLR uses a mirror and pentaprism mechanism to show the photographer the field of view of his camera’s lens. We will discuss how exactly that works at a later part of this Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III comparison article.

This viewfinder system is pretty simple. Instead of a miniature image, what you see is the light, exactly how your camera sees it. If it’s dark, your viewfinder will see darkness, if it’s bright, your viewfinder will see the brightness.

Differences Between An Electronic Viewfinder And An Optical Viewfinder

Electronic Viewfinder (EVF)Optical Viewfinder (OVF)
The camera needs to be powered on for you to use the electronic viewfinder. The camera does not need to be turned on for you to use the optical viewfinder.
With this, what you see is a digital image. This image is a preview of what your image is going to turn out like, including all user-defined settings. With the OVF, what you see is raw light, exactly how it’s entering into your camera’s lens.

Hence, you cannot see the changes made to the image via user-defined settings, until the image is actually taken.
You can fit in a lot more information into your electronic viewfinder. There is a limited amount of information you can see via your optical viewfinder.

If you still don’t understand the difference between an electronic viewfinder and an optical viewfinder, or perhaps you just need some more information, well, we’re here for you- Watch the video below for a full explanation about the differences between these two types of viewfinders:

Now that we’re done with viewfinders, let’s go on to look at other features that come with both of these cameras- Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III!

External Flash Shoe

Both of these cameras come with an external flash shoe. With this, you can connect your camera to an external flash. Connecting your camera to an external flash guarantees you proper lighting for when you’re shooting in low-lighting conditions.

One thing we would’ve loved, though, is if these two cameras come the with built-in flash. Neither of these cameras comes with that feature, which means that you always have to depend on this external flash shoe when you need extra light for shots.

RAW Support

Both of these cameras- Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III, come with a featured called “RAW support”. We’re sure you’re wondering what this means. Well, RAW is a format used to save images, just like JPEG is. The difference between the two saving formats, though, is that one is raw, and the other is touched. Can you guess which one is raw? Lol.

The image format “RAW”, is named as such because of the way the image is saved. Every digital camera captures images in this format. However, many digital cameras do not allow you to save the image in this format. Rather, they edit the image, adding sharpness and things like that, compress the image, and then convert it to JPEG, before storing.

This process of editing and compressing reducing the information in the picture. When you save in RAW format, this information is kept. Later on, when you’re editing, this wealth of information is what will allow you to edit the picture into whatever you dim fit.

One thing you must take note of, though, is that RAW images are very large. You need to check how much space you have in your storage space, before shooting RAW images.

Face Detection Focus

This feature is quite simple. Once either of these cameras- Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III, see a face in the frame, it focuses on it. On the surface, this might not seem like such a huge feature. However, it really goes a long way in easing the process of taking portrait photos.

Microphone Port

Both of these cameras come with a microphone port. With a microphone port, you can connect your camera to an external microphone. These cameras do come with built-in microphones. However, if you’ve used one of those before, you’ll know how bad they are.

If you want to record high-quality audio, you need an external microphone.

Headphone Port

When recording audio with an external microphone, it is important that you also have a headphone connected into your camera. With this headphone, you will be able to listen to, and monitor the audio, live, as it is being recorded.

These two cameras come with a headphone port that allows you to do this. Without a headphone port, you’ll be able to record audio with your external microphone (if it comes with that port) but you won’t be able to hear what the audio sounds like until the video has finished recording.

Environmental Sealing

Both of these cameras come with an environmental sealing feature. Have you ever been out shooting and the weather just turns on you and you have to immediately stop? Do you remember how frustrating it was for you? Well, with this environmental sealing feature, that does not need to happen anymore.

Both Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III come with frames that are made of magnesium alloys. These frames are both moisture and dust resistant. With this, you can keep shooting even when it gets rainy and windy.

One thing you must not forget, however, is that neither of these cameras is waterproof. You cannot shoot underwater with either of these cameras.

AE Bracketing

“Exposure” is one of the most important things in modern photography. Most of the time, the exposure setting can make or mar any photo. Because of how important exposure is for an image, getting it right for becomes even more important.

This is why bracketing exists for exposure. Exposure bracketing is basically taking different photos of the same scene, using different exposure settings. These settings usually range from underexposed to overexposed, in an equal margin, and they are usually 3 or more.

Photographers have been doing this for quite a while, and honestly, it’s quite the chore. This is why Auto Exposure Bracketing was introduced. Auto Exposure Bracketing basically takes the process we highlighted earlier and makes it automatic.

With this, your camera lets you set the different exposure settings you want from your image. Once that is set and the shutter button is clicked, these settings are then implemented into different images of the same scene. Now, you don’t have to waste time shooting, changing settings, and shooting again. You can do it all at once!

Another added benefit of AE Bracketing is that you can create HDR images. Basically, an HDR image is a combination of these different images with their different exposure settings, to create one, correctly exposed, image.

Features Unique To The Sony a7S

It’s A Mirrorless Camera

This is the biggest difference between these cameras, and probably the reason why you would choose either of them, at the end of the day. The Sony a7S is a mirrorless camera, while the Canon 5D Mark III is a DSLR camera.

Mirrorless cameras have been around for more than a decade now and it is only until recently that they began to gain popularity amongst photographers. As you can already tell from the name, these cameras do not come with mirrors.

In a DSLR, there is a mirror and a pentaprism inside it, which transfers light to the camera’s viewfinder. With mirrorless cameras, the light that enters the camera through its lens is sent directly to an electronic sensor.

This sensor is responsible for converting that light into a digital image. The digital image is then projected onto a miniature display which you see when you look into your viewfinder. This is the major difference between DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. However, there are other differences.

Because we’re looking at mirrorless cameras right now, we would be looking at the advantages that mirrorless cameras have over DSLRs. To find out the advantages DSLRs have over mirrorless cameras, you need to read that portion of this article, which is down below.

Advantages Mirrorless Cameras Have Over DSLRs
1. They’re Smaller And Lighter

Because mirrorless cameras do not have to fit a mirror and a pentaprism inside them, they can be made to be a lot smaller and more compact. In fact, this is the main reason why a lot of people are opting for mirrorless cameras.

With mirrorless cameras, you get a very good camera, similar quality to a DSLR, but in a much smaller package. This is great for people who travel a lot and like to keep their load small, for vloggers, people with smaller hands, and generally people who prefer a lighter kit.

2. Continuous Shooting

Mirrorless cameras often have better continuous shooting rates than equivalent DSLR cameras. This is because, mirrorless cameras do not have any moving parts, whereas, DSLRs, do. When the shutter button is clicked on a DSLR, the mirror needs to flip upwards so that light can hit the camera’s sensor. It is when the light hits this sensor that the image is captured.

On the flipside, with mirrorless cameras, the light is always hitting the camera’s sensor. So, when the shutter button is clicked, there is no movement, hence why they are faster.

We must point out, though, that this particular point is not evident when we look at these cameras- Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III, as the Canon 5D Mark III has better continuous shooting rate than the Sony a7S. However, the reason is clear. The Canon 5D Mark III is a lot more expensive than the Sony a7S, which means that they are not exactly equivalent.

For a proper comparison of what we’re talking about, look at mirrorless cameras and DSLRs that are similarly priced. You would often find out that the mirrorless camera has better continuous shooting rates than the DSLR.

Wireless Connection

The Sony a7s comes with a wireless connection. This is one of the benefits of getting a camera that is not very old. As you can see with the Canon 5D Mark II, it is difficult to get a camera that is very old and comes with a wireless connection.

With wireless connectivity, your camera is able to connect with, communicate, and transfer files to other devices. Another big advantage of this is that you can send your pictures directly to the internet, from your camera. For people whose main aim for capturing photos is to share them online, this adds a whole lot of ease to that process.

Furthermore, with this feature, you can easily send your photos to the internet so you don’t lose them if your memory ever gets corrupt.

One thing we would’ve loved to see, though, is Bluetooth. This camera, although it has a wireless connection feature, does not come with Bluetooth. There are a lot of other devices that come with Bluetooth connectivity. Almost all smartphones do. If this camera came with Bluetooth, it would’ve been easier and faster to connect and transfer files to those devices.

NFC Connection

Added to the wireless connectivity of this camera is a feature known as NFC Connection. NFC is an acronym that stands for Near Field Communication. Basically, this feature allows you to connect your camera to other compatible devices, simply by putting them close to each other.

Once your camera is paired with that particular device, it immediately connects to it once they’re put close to each other again. This is the feature that lets you connect your smartphone to the Sony a7S, in order to use it as a remote-control device.

The Canon 5D Mark III, on the other hand, does not let you use your smartphone as a remote control for your camera.

Articulating Screen

The LCD screen that comes with this camera is one that tilts. It is joined to the camera using a pivot system. This pivot system is what allows this camera to tilt towards different angles and positions.

Although these two cameras- Sony a7S Vs 5D Mark III, come with viewfinders, there are certain scenarios and shooting positions that will not let you use a viewfinder. In these situations, a still, front-facing LCD screen does not help either. This is because, it is facing the same direction as your viewfinder and so if you can’t see with that, you can’t see with the LCD screen either.

It is in scenarios and shooting positions like highlighted above, that articulating screens become even more important. The LCD screen on this camera is flexible enough to allow you to frame your photos properly when shooting from awkward angles.

Although this screen is articulating, it doesn’t tilt 180 degrees. What we simply mean is that this is not a selfie screen. If you’re a vlogger who likes to see what the frame looks like while you’re shooting, you might want to consider this slight hiccup.

Maximum ISO: 409,600

ISO basically refers to the light sensitivity of your camera. The higher it is, the more sensitive your camera is to light. This is particularly important when you’re shooting in low-light situations as that’s when you need as much light as possible, to capture a bright image.

With an ISO range as wide as the one on this camera, you can rest assured that your camera will capture a bright image, no matter the lighting conditions. This is super important if you do a lot of late-night, dark-area shots.

One thing you need to know about ISO, though, is that the higher it gets, the more noise on your photos. One reason why many people don’t use the really high ISO numbers is because of how much noise is generated in the photo, as a result. However, if you need a clear picture and you don’t care about noise levels, it’s good to know that with the Sony a7S, you have that at your disposal.

4K Video

The maximum video resolution on this camera is 3840 x 2160, which is 4K video. Presently, everyone who shoots video is trying to capture 4K video, it’s what everyone is worried about. If you belong to the “everyone” group, then you will be glad about this camera because it lets you shoot 4K video.

The Canon 5D Mark III, on the other hand, can only shoot HD videos. And that is very clear, no doubt, but it’s just not as clear as 4K. With that said, if you’re going to be shooting 4K video, you have to be sure you have a computer with the processing power to carry it.

Check out the video below if you want a review about the Sony a7S in a video format. It’s a hands-on approach to the review that also features pictures taken by the camera. Check it out below:

It’s A DSLR

Canon has been really reluctant to dive in head-first into the world of mirrorless cameras. Because of that, it doesn’t come as a surprise to us that this Canon camera is a DSLR, especially considering how far back it was produced.

Although there’s a lot of talk about mirrorless cameras, there are a lot of people who would never let DSLRs go, at least, not just yet. And this is for good reason, DSLRs still have their strengths, areas in which they do better than mirrorless cameras.

In a DSLR, you have a mirror and a pentaprism. The light in the field of view of the camera enters into the camera through the camera’s lens. When the shutter is closed, this light hits a mirror. This mirror then divides this light into two parts.

The first part of the light is sent upwards to the pentaprism. This pentaprism then straightens the light, horizontally, before it’s sent to the optical viewfinder. We’ve already talked extensively about optical viewfinders. So, if you want to, you can scroll up to find all that information.

The second part of the light is sent downwards to a specific sensor. This sensor is responsible for autofocusing. This is why a lot of people feel like DSLRs have better autofocusing than mirrorless cameras.

While we were talking about mirrorless cameras earlier, we looked the advantaged they have over DSLRs. Now, we’ll be looking at the advantages that DSLRs have over mirrorless cameras, let’s go!

Advantages DSLRs Have Over Mirrorless Cameras
1. Battery Life

DSLRs have better battery life than mirrorless cameras. There is honestly no debate about it, and this is caused by multiple reasons. The first reason is the size of the camera. Mirrorless cameras are made to be really small and compact. While this is great for portability, it does come at a cost. In order for them to get the really small look, the battery size of mirrorless cameras needs to be reduced.

Now, for batteries, the bigger the size, the bigger the capacity. So, reducing the size of the batteries in mirrorless cameras, reduced their capacity.

Furthermore, mirrorless cameras come with a lot of electronic features. DSLRs, on the other hand, feature a lot of more mechanical features. These electronic features all depend on power to function. Meanwhile, mechanical parts do not.

You can see this evident in a feature such as its electronic viewfinder. The optical viewfinder that comes with DSLRs can be used even when the camera is turned off. This is because it does not require power to function. Electronic viewfinders, on the other hand, require the camera be turned on before they function. In fact, the electronic viewfinder is the major power-draining feature on mirrorless cameras.

Finally, the electronic sensor on mirrorless cameras needs to be on all the time, when the shutter is open, and when it is closed. This is because that’s what gives you the display you use to frame your photos. With DSLRs, the electronic sensor only needs to come on when the shutter button is clicked and the shutter is open.

Top LCD

This camera comes with a top LCD. This helps you to easily view and change settings, when necessary. However, this LCD screen cannot tilt, which means that you can only use it when you’re facing one way.

Second Storage Slot

While the Sony a7s comes with just one storage slot, this camera comes equipped with two storage slots. This added storage slot gives you some level of storage safety and flexibility. With this, you can always switch to the secondary storage if the primary storage is full or has been corrupted.
