The more recent mirrorless cameras are the ones with electronic viewfinders. Both of these types have their advantages and disadvantages. The best thing about the Leica M240 is that you have the ability to use both viewfinders, electronic and rangefinders.

Both of these cameras come with good sensor resolution as they’re both above 20 megapixels, which is usually the benchmark. But the Sony a7RII shoots 4K video, while the Leica M240 does not.

At the end of the day, choosing between either of these cameras is determined by what you want. The Sony a7RII is the more practical and efficient camera. Brand Comparison — Sony Vs Leica

The Japanese corporation, Sony, is a global brand involved in a lot of industries. They’ve involved electronics, entertainment, gaming, and financial services. Leica, on the other hand, is a German company that strictly produces cameras and all its accessories.

Leica has been producing cameras for more than a century, hand-crafting all of their cameras with the best quality achievable. Leica cameras were the most popular for street photographers in the 1980s and 1990s because they were the first to make compact rangefinder cameras.

But in modern time, Sony has been the more preferred brand because their cameras are a lot more affordable than Leica’s,

What Scenario Is What Camera Better For — Sony a7RII Vs Leica M240?

Sony a7RII

Leica M240

The Sony a7RII is a really good professional mirrorless camera. This camera comes with all the general benefits that mirrorless cameras come with and of course all the drawbacks.Leica is a very respected brand when it comes to the manufacturing of cameras. People really trust this brand as its cameras are hand-made and as such, quality is assured.
However, it does go further with some amazing extra features that it comes with. The 42-megapixel sensor is almost unmatched. With these many megapixels, your images will appear really sharp. With this, you can print your images on really large prints without losing any part of the image getting pixelated. This camera does not have a lot of over-the-top features but it does the basics very well. Although the 24-megapixel sensor is nothing compared to the 42-megapixel sensor on the Sony a7RII, it still does a really good job.
Also, this camera comes with a headphone and an external microphone port. With these two features, you can easily record high-quality audio into your camera alongside your videos. And with the headphone port, you can monitor this audio as you’re recording it.The one place that this camera is better than the Sony a7RII is in the battery. This camera is a mirrorless camera, so it comes with a small battery. However, the battery life of this camera is better than that of the Sony a7RII. It is capable of 500 shots per full charge.

Common Features — Sony a7RII Vs Leica M240

Here are things that make the Sony a7RII and Leica M240 similar:

i. External flash hot shoe

ii. Viewfinder

iii. RAW support

iv. Weather sealing

v. Good maximum sensor resolution

We will now look at each of them in detail…

External Flash Shoe

The first feature that both of these cameras come with is not a very huge one, however, it is quite important. If you do flash photography, you definitely want this particular feature.

An external flash shoe is what enables you to connect an external flash on to your camera. Without this feature, you won’t be able to use an external flash with your camera, which is really disappointing.

Viewfinder

Both of these cameras come with a viewfinder. A viewfinder is basically that small hole that a photographer looks into so he can frame and compose his photos properly. All DSLRs come with viewfinders. However, not all mirrorless cameras come with viewfinders. Mirrorless cameras that do not come with viewfinders use the LCD screen to show the photographer the camera’s field of view.

The great thing about viewfinders is that you can use them no matter the lighting condition. That is not the same for LCD screens. It’s difficult to use an LCD screen to shoot when you’re out under the sunlight. The rays of the sun bouncing off the screen will make it really difficult for you to frame your photos properly.

Both of these cameras come with different viewfinders. The Sony a7RII comes with an electronic viewfinder, while the Leica M240 comes with a rangefinder, optical viewfinder. Leica is one of the very few brands, if not the only brand, that still produces digital cameras with rangefinders.

Because these viewfinders are so different, we would be discussing them individually below:

Electronic Viewfinder

Just like we’ve mentioned earlier, the Sony a7RII comes with an electronic viewfinder. Electronic viewfinders are found in mirrorless cameras. With electronic viewfinders, what you see is a digital image, as opposed to raw light which you see using an optical viewfinder.

The original mirrorless cameras used rangefinders as their viewfinders, just like the Leica M240. However, in recent times, more manufacturers have opted for electronic viewfinders. The biggest advantage of this viewfinder type is that they’re a lot more affordable to manufacture. They are also easy to mass produce, which makes the cameras they’re used in, more affordable.

In a mirrorless camera, there is no mirror or pentaprism, hence, the name. This mirror is used for two things. First, it’s used to transfer light to the camera’s optical viewfinder. Second, it’s used to send the light to an autofocus sensor which is responsible for focusing.

Mirrorless cameras replace the mirror and pentaprism with a much smaller electronic sensor. This sensor converts the light that enters into the camera to a digital image. This digital image is sent to a miniature display which is what the photographer sees when he looks into his electronic viewfinder.

Mirrorless cameras that come with rangefinders work quite differently. We’ll get into that when we’re looking at “Rangefinders”. A lot of people prefer electronic viewfinders to optical viewfinders because with electronic viewfinders, instead of raw light, you’re seeing a preview of the image your camera is capturing, exactly how it’s going to appear.

This really helps amateurs who haven’t fully understood things like ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. With an optical viewfinder, changes made to your ISO settings can only be seen through a light meter. On the other hand, with electronic viewfinders, you see exactly how that light is affecting your image.

Rangefinders

Cameras that come with rangefinders are usually referred to as “rangefinders”. They are often described as the original mirrorless cameras. In the olden days, rangefinders were very popular amongst street photographers.

They were popular for the same reasons why the newer mirrorless cameras are popular. They were much smaller and less bulky than the SLRs that were available at that time. At the time, they used the same 35mm film that the SLRs used. However, they used another focusing mechanism that did not require the use of mirrors.

To manually focus with a DSLR, you need to look through the optical viewfinder. Light enters the camera through the lens, bounces off of a mirror and a pentaprism, and is sent to your eye through the optical viewfinder. When you see this light through your viewfinder, you then adjust the focal length of your lens until the image appears as sharp as you want and the focus is right for you.

As you can see, the optical viewfinder and the electronic viewfinder systems work hand-in-glove with the camera’s lens. It’s very different with rangefinders. Rangefinders (the camera) got their name from rangefinder (the visual system).

This visual system is built as close to the camera’s lens as possible. It shows the photographer two images that overlap each other. When you align these two images, the distance- the range- between the camera and the subject can be calculated because of parallax. Then, you can focus your lens.

The major drawback with rangefinders is the fact that what you see is not exactly what you get. Because the visual system is built differently from the camera’s lens, the image captured may vary slightly from what you’re seeing with the rangefinder.

Digital Rangefinder

The Leica M240 is a rangefinder. However, it’s a more modern representation and is described as a digital rangefinder. It bears all the similarities to the traditional rangefinders except for the fact that it comes with an LCD screen that provides you with a live view action.

You can use the rangefinder on this camera for manual focusing to give you that old-school street vibe. However, when you want, you can also use an electronic viewfinder. The electronic viewfinder connects to the camera using its hot shoe.

If you don’t still understand what we’re talking about, check out the video below:

Now that we’ve looked at the difference in these viewfinders, let’s look at the other features that these two cameras share:

RAW Storage Support

Both of these cameras come with RAW storage support. RAW is an image format that is named like that because of the way it saves its images, in their RAW format.

All images captured by digital cameras are initially taken in this image format. However, some digital cameras do not let you save the image in this format. If your camera does not let you save the image in this format, it converts it to JPEG before saving.

Before the camera converts the image to JPEG, it will first edit the picture, altering things like brightness and sharpness as it sees fit. After that, it will then compress the image, before it finally converts it to JPEG for storage.

The reason why a lot of people do not like this process is that during the process, some information on the image is lost. This information might, later on, prove vital when you’re trying to edit the photos to your likening.

With RAW storage support, your image is stored exactly the way it is. This leaves with a lot more information to play with when you’re editing your pictures. After editing the pictures, you can then convert it to JPEG by yourself, without any information getting lost.

One thing you must take into consideration, though, is the fact that RAW images are really large. If you’re going to be shooting RAW, make sure you have enough storage space.

Environmental Sealing

If you’re going to be doing most of your shooting outdoors, you definitely want to know how well your camera can handle certain weather conditions. If you’ve ever been in a position where you’re shooting but you have to cut it short because of the weather, you definitely understand the frustration that comes with that.

With both of these cameras- Sony a7RII Vs Leica M240, you get “environmental sealing”. What this basically means is that these cameras are both moisture and dust resistant. The moisture resistance will protect your camera from small droplets of rain, the dust resistance will protect your camera from dust particles that are carried by the wind.

You can now shoot outdoors without worrying about what the weather forecast is. There is one thing we want you to take note of, though, and that is the fact that neither of these cameras is water resistant. If you put any of these cameras into a pool of water, it may cause damage.

Good Maximum Sensor Resolution

Both of these cameras have really good maximum sensor resolutions. For most professionals, anything equal or above 20 megapixels is fine for a digital camera. Both of these cameras- Sony a7RII Vs Leica M240, fall well into that category.

Yes, the maximum sensor resolution is not the ultimate decider as to what could be considered a good camera. However, it does go a long way. With a good sensor resolution, you get more pixels in your images, which make them appear brighter and sharper.

Also, if you’re going to be making really large prints of your images, you definitely a camera with good sensor resolution. The more megapixels your camera can process, the better and clearer your images will appear when they’re expanded. If your camera doesn’t have good sensor resolution, your large prints will appear pixelated.

Although these two cameras are considered to have good maximum sensor resolution, they are not equal. Check out the table below to find out what camera has a higher maximum sensor resolution:

Unique Features — Sony a7RII Vs Leica M240

Which has built-in Wi-Fi: Sony a7RII or Leica M240?

The Sony a7RII comes with built-in Wi-Fi. In this day and age, this is a really important and helpful feature. With this, you can wirelessly connect your camera to other devices such as your smartphone and laptop. This lets you easily transfer files away from your camera.

Also, you can easily upload your images from your camera straight to the internet. If your primary audience is on social media, then you want an easy yet efficient way to get your pictures to them as quickly as you can.

Furthermore, this camera comes with something called NFC (Near Field Communication). This is basically a wireless connectivity feature that allows you to connect your camera to other compatible devices simply by placing them close to each other. Once these devices are initially paired, they automatically connect to each other once they’re in close proximity.

This feature is what lets you lets you use your smartphone as a remote control for your camera.

Which comes with image stabilization: Sony a7RII or Leica M240?

The Sony a7RII comes with built-in sensor-shift image stabilization. Image stabilization refers to a group of techniques performed by the camera that keeps its lens stable even after mild camera movements. This feature is what keeps your images free of blur caused as a result of mild camera movements.

Say you’re taking photos of wildlife from a moving vehicle, or you’re covering an event and you have to move from one place to another quickly, your photos will come out looking stable, thanks to this feature.

Which is better for flexible shooting: Sony a7RII or Leica M240?

One really nice feature that the Sony a7RII comes with that is not available on the Leica M240 is the articulating screen. An articulating screen is basically an LCD that is connected to the camera using a pivot system. This pivot is what allows this articulating screen to tilt in different directions so that the photographer can shoot comfortably from different angles.

There are certain positions you would need to shoot from where it will be difficult to use your viewfinder. When shooting from these positions, you can easily use this articulating screen to frame your photos properly so you can get a great shot from angles.

Which is better for portrait photography: Sony a7RII or Leica M240?

The Sony a7RII is better for portrait photography than the Leica M240, and that is because it is the only one of the two cameras that comes with the face detection focus feature. This feature is just as the name implies. With this, your camera straight up focuses on a face once it is in the frame of the camera.

Which offers options for better audio quality: Sony a7RII or Leica M240?

The Sony a7RII offers better options for enhanced audio quality than the Leica M240 as it is compatible with both external microphones and headphones. Most cameras come with their own built-in microphones. However, those microphones don’t do a lot when it comes to noise cancellation, and that is why you need an external microphone.

Headphones are used to monitor the audio in real time. So, with this, you won’t have to wait till you’re done recording to hear what your audio sounds like.

These two features go hand-in-glove. However, some cameras only come with one or the other. So, it’s a really commendable thing that the a7RII comes with both.

Which records better video quality: Sony a7RII or Leica M240?

The Sony a7RII shoots 4K; the Leica M240 shoots full HD. This alone tells you that the Sony camera produces better video quality. However, one thing you will need to consider when shooting 4K is how powerful your computer is. If you’re going to be shooting 4K video, be sure that you have a system with the capabilities to process it.

Which is better for HDR photography: Sony a7RII or Leica M240?

The Sony a7RII is better than the Leica M240 in the area of HDR photography and this is simply because it comes with one feature that the Leica camera does not possess: auto exposure bracketing. This feature is what makes it possible to get HDR photos. Basically, an HDR photo is a combination of photos of the same scene with different exposure settings to form one image. This image formed now becomes “perfectly” exposed.

Furthermore, because of how important getting the right exposure is, photographers developed something called the exposure bracket. An exposure bracket is a group of photos taken of the same scene with different exposure settings. These exposure settings usually range from underexposed to overexposed, in the equal margin.

To create an exposure bracket, you need to take a photo, change the exposure setting, take another photo, and so on, and so forth. This is a very tedious and time-consuming process. Which is why Auto Exposure Bracketing became a thing.

With Auto Exposure Bracketing, all you need to do is set the different exposure settings you want for the different images. Once you’ve done that and click the shutter button, these different images with the different exposure settings are captured.

We’ve talked a lot about this camera. We’re sure you’re now very interested to see exactly how this camera works. Check out the video below to find out whether this camera is worth buying four years after it was created:

Which is available in more than one color: Sony a7RII or Leica M240?

While you can only get the Sony a7RII in black, you can get the Leica M240 in two different colors — black and silver. Of course, this doesn’t affect the workings of the camera, but it’s just nice to have two color options to choose from.

Which offers multiple viewfinder options: Sony a7RII or Leica M240?

The Sony a7RII is a modern mirrorless camera and it can only use an electronic viewfinder. The Leica M240, on the other hand, uses a rangefinder viewfinder normally. But, if/when you want, there’s an option to use an electronic viewfinder with this camera.

The electronic viewfinder is connected to the camera using the camera’s external flash shoe. It’s really nice to have these two options available to you as you get the best of both worlds, a rangefinder, and a more modern electronic viewfinder.

As a photographer, we’re sure that you want to see what this camera shoots like before you go ahead to make your decision. If that’s the case for you, check out the video below:

Sony a7RII Vs Leica M240 – FAQs

Is the Leica M240 a good camera?

The Leica M240 is not a bad camera. It is surely far from amazing, but it is a good choice for some forms of photography. It has a 24 megapixel full frame CMOS sensor, so, you’re sure that you’ll be getting images with big enough prints when you shoot with this camera.

Also, it has a viewfinder (and an option for another one; amazing!) and it is also weather sealed, these make the Leica M240 such a good fit for any form of outdoor photography.

It does not have a built-in flash, but it makes up for that by coming with a hot shoe upon which you can mount an external flash, so, it won’t be doing badly in flash photography.

Is the Leica M240 still worth it?

As far as performance and functionality goes, the Leica M240 is not worth it. This camera has no wireless connection, no image stabilization, slow continuous shooting, no auto exposure bracketing, no face detection focus — we could really go on and on — but it still somehow manages to cost close to 3000 bucks. Yes, you read that right; close to three thousand United States dollars!

Of course, people who go for Leica cameras opt for them for something other than their performance and functionality, so, technically, it is very much worth it to some people; perhaps some kind of sentimental value. But speaking purely economically, the Leica M240 is not worth all that money.

Is the Leica M240 a professional camera?

The Leica M240 was intended to be a professional camera by the manufacturers, but we really do not think that it is doing that job very well. Apart from its 24 mega pixel full frame CMOS sensor, its viewfinder, and its weather sealing, there is hardly any feature this camera comes with that is pro camera worthy.

The Leica M240 has an average battery life, no image stabilization, no face detection focus, no auto exposure bracketing, slow continuous shooting…what exactly will any professional photographer want with this camera?

Does the Leica M240 have wireless connection?

The Leica M240 has no provision for wireless connectivity. There is no built-in Wi-Fi, so, you won’t be able to create a wireless connection and transfer files to nearby smartphones. There is also no near field communication, so, one touch wireless connections are completely out of the question.

Even good old Bluetooth; you won’t be getting that with the Leica M240 either. Basically, to transfer files from this camera, you will have to make do with the outdated USB cables and memory cards. And this camera is not even compatible with UHS memory cards, so, well, you will have to have a lot of patience when trying to get your files out of the Leica M240.

Is the Leica M240 good for video?

The Leica M240 records pretty decent video quality. But considering how much it costs, we were expecting that this camera would shoot 4K UHD, at least. Anyway, full HD isn’t bad, but you know what is? No external microphone jack on a professional camera.

The implication of this is basically that you will be stuck with whatever quality the built-in microphone produces which is hardly ever excellent. So, while you will be getting okay visual quality with the M240, the same can’t be said for the audio.

Is the Leica M240 good for wildlife photography?

On one hand, you may want to say that the Leica M240 is a good camera for wildlife photography because of its weather sealed body which implies that you will be able to shoot in pretty much any weather condition.

On the other hand, the M240 has a slow continuous shooting, no auto exposure bracketing, poor low light performance, and no image stabilization; so, it surely is not the best camera for wildlife photography; as a matter of fact, far from it.
