It’s going to be quite a ball checking out these cameras as they are completely different from each other and geared towards different users.

The Sony a6000, on one hand, is considered a semi-pro camera in some circles (we like to think of it more as an entry-level camera sometimes).

On the other hand, we have the Sony a7R which is a fantastic pro camera and it has the hefty price tag to show for it. Also, if you’re fluent in Sony speak, then the name of the model will already intimate you about one thing you can expect.

Sony carries an “R” line of pro cameras which are known for their excellent resolution. Already, Sony makes some of the best full frames in the industry. However, it’s alpha R cameras are even more fantastic with their super high resolutions. These cameras already automatically speak to certain kinds of photographers.

Where Both Cameras Get It Right

We really love that these two cameras come with high resolution sensors. They are both great choices for photographers who do a lot of cropping as well as those who print their pictures in large sizes. So, sensor resolution is one point for both cameras.

Besides that, low light capability is another aspect where we give both cameras kudos. The Sony a7R does better, definitely. But then again, in comparison to the Sony a6000, it is a pro camera with a full frame sensor and, therefore, larger sensor pixel area. But for their categories, these two cameras perform excellently in low light.

Next, these two cameras come with wireless connection and NFC connection. With these two features, transfer of photos and videos from your camera to other devices, friends, and family is speedy and hassle-free as well.

Other areas where the Sony a7R and a6000 get it right are dynamic range, ISO (fantastic, 100 – 25600), max shutter speeds, color depth, and viewfinders.

They also do well in their articulating screen, although it wouldn’t have hurt to see a fully articulating, touch sensitive screen on the Sony a7R especially.

AE bracketing, LCD screen resolution, external flash shoes, time lapse recording, and smartphone control are also other features both get right.

Finally, these two cameras are lightweight and compact, even the full frame Sony a7R. They are so comfy to carry around. Plus, being an interchangeable lens cameras, you get to use any lens you want on your camera.

Where The Sony a7R Does It Better

The Sony a7R comes with higher resolutions for all the screens – viewfinder, LCD screen, and sensor. Besides that, it also has a faster max shutter speed that goes as fast as 1/8000 second.

One major feature that gives the Sony a7R an edge over the Sony a6000 is the presence of an input for a microphone port. This helps the sound quality of videos recorded by the camera. The Sony a6000, on the other hand, lacks that input. So, users have to be really clever in order to produce great videos with excellent audio quality.

Another major advantage of the Sony a7R over the Sony a6000 is the fact that the camera comes with a full frame sensor. The presence of a full frame sensor plus a sharper sensor means that the Sony a7R will always take better pictures than the Sony a6000. For portraits with amazing depth of field and excellent detailing, the Sony a7R does a bang up job.

Additionally, the Sony a7R does a better job in low light, thanks to its full frame sensors and larger sensor pixel area.

And lastly, another major area where the Sony a7R scores bigger points than the Sony a6000 is the fact that it comes environmentally-sealed. This keeps your camera rugged and protected from the elements. You’d be able to use the camera in unpredictable weather and it can definitely take some handling. The Sony a6000, on the other hand, isn’t environmentally-sealed.

Where The Sony a6000 Does It Better

The Sony a6000, although the less expensive camera with a crop sensor, the Sony a6000 also has areas where it trumps the Sony a7R. The cost of the camera is one. It’s affordable to most camera lovers – from professionals to beginners.

Another major score for the Sony a6000 is in its focus points. It comes with about 179 focus points and here’s what we noticed. The autofocusing of the Sony a6000 is quite snappy. This camera focuses in no time flat.

Also, the autofocusing is quite precise as well. This camera has this red spot that you can see on the screen. The red spot tells you where your camera is focusing at the time and you can adjust that simply by rolling the knob on the top panel of the camera. We can tell you it’s super precise and you don’t find that feature on the Sony a7R. In fact, autofocusing is quite slow on the Sony a7R.

The final major area where the Sony a6000 trumps the Sony a7R is the burst mode. The Sony a6000 has a continuous shooting feature of 11 frames per second. That’s pretty impressive especially for wildlife and sport photography. It also makes the Sony a6000 a better choice than the a7R in those genres.

Other areas where the Sony a6000 wins the Sony a7R vs a6000 contest are battery life, support for UHS memory cards, and weight.

Where Both Cameras Get It Wrong

These two cameras both lack image stabilization. It could affect the quality of images taken especially when the cameras are taken handheld. If that’s more your kind of photography, then you might want to get IS lenses.

But then again, that’s additional gear and additional expenses. Your best bet though is to work with a tripod.

Another area where both cameras suck is in the battery department. Both cameras have poor battery lives. So, you want to make provision for spare batteries in case of a long shoot.

Our Opinion On The Price/Value Ratio

We think Sony did pretty well when it comes to the price/value balance of each of these cameras. The Sony a6000 is super affordable and it’s easy to see how the price/value ratio makes sense.

The Sony a7R, on the other hand, is somewhat expensive. It currently sells for a little above two thousand bucks which is pretty hefty. We think Sony did a good job generally but we are not exactly confident the Sony a7R is at its best price.

It feels slightly overpriced at more than two thousand dollars. Come on, there is no image stabilization, no 4K video. It doesn’t even have a fully articulating, touch sensitive screen. It’s a great camera alright. Nonetheless, the camera seems slightly overpriced to us.

What Situation Is Each Camera Best For?

Sony a7R

Sony a6000

The Sony a7R is a beautiful, and sexy camera. The compact size and weight of the camera makes it an excellent choice for most users. It’s really cool that you get all the features the Sony a7R comes with in such a convenient size that makes it easy to travel with.

You can definitely make this camera your daily camera because of how lightweight and compact it is.   However, there’s one thing that the Sony a7R gets and gets well – its sensor resolution. The sensor of this camera is super sharp.

First off, we are looking at a full frame sensor. This already gives the camera an edge over the Sony a6000. It also makes the camera better for certain genres of photography including street photography, portrait, and especially landscape. You’re going to enjoy how the full frame takes a more encompassing shot of your frame.

Secondly, this is a 36 megapixel camera. So it gives really detailed and beautiful photos. Aggressive croppers and photographers with clients that demand large sized photos will find this camera useful for such.

Besides that, with a better low light ISO and greater sensor pixel area, this camera is fantastic in the dark. The Sony a6000 is a great camera, no doubt. However, the Sony a7R is even better at low light. But then again the a7R is a pro camera.

We’re not sure how this camera would fair for photographer into the action scene. And there are two principal reasons for this.

The first is that this camera has a poor continuous shooting ability. It only takes about 4 frames per second. Secondly, it lacks image stabilization. This makes it a little difficult to take photos in scenes where there are constant movements.

Of course, you could fix the stabilization issue with a tripod or some other gear. But the continuous shooting ability is poor all the same. You might be better off trying out another type of camera altogether.   Finally, this camera comes weather-sealed. So, it’s rugged and you can use it while working in cases of unpredictable weather. This camera can hold its own with some slight rain and dust.

Of course, the price already suggests that this is a pro camera and so do the features. Beginners or intermediate users might want to check out the Sony a6000 instead.
Just like the Sony a7R, the Sony a6000 has a small weight and a small size as well. It’s great for adventurers and travelers looking for something to record their experiences with. It’s inexpensive as well. So, it doesn’t hurt your pocket. If you need to up and move and you can’t be bothered to pack up your heavy (and pricey) DSLR, then you might be on to something with the Sony a6000.

Besides that, this camera is great with image quality. Although it uses a crop sensor, the sensor of this camera is actually quite sharp at 24 megapixels. So, it’s usable by heavy croppers as well others those that print their photos in large sizes.
We did find out that videographers might find it a little discouraging using the Sony a6000. The camera takes great visuals, no doubt. Also, in low light, the camera does really well. The camera practically sees in the dark. Nonetheless, audio is a different matter altogether.

Because the camera lacks an input for an external microphone, you have to depend on the built-in microphone which could ruin your video’s audio since it tends to pick up on a lot of background noise.

And as for those looking for cameras for one-man videos, this might not be your best camera for the audio issues and for the fact that its screen doesn’t full articulate.

Next, this camera doesn’t come weather-sealed. This kinda makes it unwise to use the camera in cases of unpredictable weather. It also means that you’d have to be super careful with your camera in order for it to last as long as possible.

Another good point for the Sony a6000 is that it’s great for fast-paced action photography. With a burst mode of 11 frames per second and super fast autofocusing with over 179 focus points, the Sony a6000 is amazing in that genre. And the Sony a7R does not even come close. It lacks image stabilization which is a small bummer but that isn’t something that can’t be worked around.

In summary, this semi-pro (entry-level) camera is a great choice for all kinds of photographers. Even professionals looking for a budget backup camera could check this camera out as well. Its photos and low light capabilities are amazing especially for its category and price. However, if you need a camera for serious videography, this isn’t the one.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 – Which Features Do They Have In Common?

To kick off the main aspect of our Sony a7R vs Sony a6000 review, we will now check it features which they have in common. Although these are different cameras, there are points where these share some resemblance. Let’s check them out.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 Common Feature 1: High Sensor Resolution

The Sony a7R and Sony a6000 are both high resolution cameras although one is obviously higher than the other. The Sony a7R has a sensor resolution of 36 megapixels while the Sony a6000 comes in at 24 megapixels. So, the a7R is the higher one obviously. But what does it all boil down to?

Well, in the first place, you need to understand that there’s more to image quality than megapixels. Plus, the higher the megapixel count of your sensor, the larger the resulting image file is. This, automatically, means that if you use a high resolution sensor, you’ll also need to make provision for enough space if you don’t already have enough.

However, the truth is that there are times when it’s inevitable and you need a higher resolution for your work. Photographers who, typically, need high resolution sensors are those who tend to crop a lot and those who have to print in large sizes.

Using a low resolution sensor for such kind of work would result in poor quality images that don’t flatter your work. If you have noticed, cropping images on a low resolution camera would usually downgrade the quality of the image. The image gets zoomed in and looks worse than it was when it was normal. This is why we advise that such photographers use high res cameras instead.

Also, for downsampling, high res cameras are best. Downsampling involves downgrading a file for the purpose of reducing its size thereby making it easier to upload and transfer. Typically, this downgrading also affects image quality as well. But if the photo was taken with a high res camera, then even though the image is downsampled and the file size is reduced, the image still maintains that quality to it.

So, just how large can these cameras print? Well, the Sony a7R, which is a 36 megapixel sensor, will be able to print pictures at a size of 16 by 24 inches perfectly. The Sony a6000, on the other hand, prints at a size of about 11 by 14 inches perfectly. It can also print in sizes up to 30 by 40 inches pretty good too.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 Common Feature 2: ISO 100 – 25600

Alright, so now we look at the ISO of these cameras. They both have an ISO range of 100 to 25600 which is pretty high for any camera at all. This is even more impressive for the Sony a6000 especially for the price it currently sells at.

The ISO range of your camera plays a role when it comes to shooting at night, indoors, or in poor lighting conditions. Although, generally, photographers avoid using high ISO settings for fear of noisy photos, the truth is that many pro photographers actually reach out for cameras with the highest ISO ranges.

Besides, high ISO makes it possible to work with faster shutter speeds and smaller aperture settings which are the primary reasons photographers reach out for them. Plus, thanks to technological advancements, there are easier ways to deal with noise such that you no longer have to bother about high ISO and noise tendencies.

In low light, these cameras are simply amazing. The Sony a7R has a low light ISO of 2746 while the Sony a6000 has a low light ISO of 1347. From the numbers, the Sony a7R is better in low light. However, that’s not to say that the Sony a6000 is not good either. The Sony a6000, for its price and category has a fantastic low light ISO doing better than the likes of the Panasonic GH4 and Canon G7X in low light settings.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81Ktyo16KHk

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 Common Feature 3: 3 Inch Articulating Screen

The Sony a7R and a6000 have similar LCD screens. They both tilt but not fully and they also lack the touch sensitivity feature. So, although they are a bit convenient, they also lack that extra bit of convenience that a fully articulating, touch sensitive screen would have given.

Now, because the screens of these cameras do not fully articulate, the camera users experience one or two limitations.

The first is that you won’t be able to use the camera for selfies. Also, and more importantly, these are not cameras that a one-man Youtuber or vlogger would be able to use. You can’t completely twist the screen so if you’re getting either of these cameras for that purpose, you’re going to need help.

Also, you’re going to be working with a lot of buttons here since the screen isn’t touch sensitive. This means that changing and adjusting your settings on the fly wouldn’t exactly be easy.

Plus, Sony’s menu is already known to be a little tricky to navigate. It’s going to require a bit of a learning curve to be able to intuitively figure your way around the camera’s setting while shooting.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 Common Feature 4: RAW Support

The ability to shoot in RAW is a staple in all modern cameras in addition to shooting in JPEG. It used to be before that photos were mostly taken in JPEG format and it had its benefits. Unlike RAW photos, when JPEG photos are taken, several optimization processes also occur on the photo. These processes work together to shrink the size of the photo and process the image as well.

The result of this, therefore, is that the image is instantly sharable. You hardly have to do any further editing and the image is good to go. However, image quality could get better ergo RAW mode.

RAW photos are excellent in terms of their quality. You can just tell the difference when you put a RAW photo and a JPEG photo side-by-side. However, why are they called RAW though?

Well, when we talked about the JPEG format, we mentioned that several optimization processes occur to compress and process the image into something that’s instantly sharable. It’s different with the RAW photos.

What actually occurs is that the camera simply picks the image right off the sensor and stores it. So, initially, when you first look at the image, it looks flatish and muted. Plus, it also comes in a pretty large size, usually the same size as the megapixel count. So, yeah, the photos are usually pretty large.

Now, for a RAW photo to be finally ready, you’d have to edit the photo with a software. You could try Lightroom or Photoshop. Either of these software applications can help you work on the image till you finally get something you like. The end result though, is usually better than a JPEG image.

Two major benefits of shooting RAW is that you get non-destructive editing. Secondly, you can more easily correct shooting errors when the photo is taken in RAW mode. Some of these common shooting errors you can easily correct when shooting in RAW include noise, exposure, white balance, etc.

By non-destructive editing, we mean that when you edit a RAW image, the quality of the camera essentially remains the same. So, even if you undo whatever it is you did, you’re still good.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 Common Feature 5: Electronic Viewfinders

If these cameras were DSLRs, they’d come with optical viewfinders and mirrors. And yes, they’d also be quite heavy to lug around as well.

However, Sony is more of a mirrorless camera brand. So, as expected, these two are mirrorless cameras which means that they come with electronic viewfinders and lack mirrors. This is a part of the reasons they are quite compact and lightweight. The Sony a7R is heavier though as it comes with a full frame sensor.

Anyway, to the electronic viewfinder. Although most prefer the optical viewfinders of DSLRs as they produce better images, electronic viewfinders are fast catching up when it comes to image quality. These days, there are mirrorless cameras that can compete with DSLRs when it comes to image quality even though DSLRs are still leading the way for now.

One of the biggest pros of electronic viewfinders is that they see as the camera sees. In comparison, optical viewfinders see as the eyes see. In fact, looking through an optical viewfinder is almost like you’re looking through an open window. On the electronic viewfinder though, the image has been digitalized.

The advantage of this digitalized image is you’re seeing how exactly the image would come out when the photo is taken. On optical viewfinders, you’re seeing as your eyes see which is different from how a camera sees. In the end, what you see on an optical viewfinder will always come out differently from the final image.

This is one of the reasons DSLRs have a steep learning curve – understanding all the factors you need to calculate to ensure that the final image looks the way you want it to look. Not the way it looks on the viewfinder.

Another good point is that electronic viewfinders display way more information than optical viewfinders which makes them more interactive than their optical viewfinders.

But then again, electronic viewfinders tend to use up your battery unlike optical viewfinders. So, oftentimes, the battery life of mirrorless cameras suck.

Alright to the Sony a7R vs Sony a6000, the electronic viewfinders of these cameras are great. Of course, the Sony a7R has a sharper sensor resolution than the Sony a6000. We are looking at resolutions of 2359k dots vs 1440k dots (Sony a7R vs Sony a6000). They are both sharp though and you’re definitely going to love working with them.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 Common Feature 6: Dynamic Range

Still on the Sony a7R vs Sony a6000 review, we’ve been checking out common features that these two fantastic cameras share. Now, we are checking out their dynamic ranges. These two cameras get excellent points for their dynamic range.

The dynamic range of any camera plays an important role in the quality of photos that camera takes especially when taken outdoors in the sun. A camera with a limited dynamic range would be difficult to work with outdoors because it would lose a lot of details to the highlight and shadows.

As usual, the higher the value of the dynamic range, the more details the camera would be able to take outdoors in the sun.

When it comes to dynamic range, cameras with the best dynamic ranges fall between 12 and 14. These cameras come with pretty good dynamic range figures. The Sony a7R comes with a dynamic range of 14.1 while the Sony a6000 has a dynamic range of 13.1. These are excellent figures.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 Common Feature 7: Fast Max Shutter Speeds

Still comparing the Sony a7R vs Sony a6000, another common feature these two cameras share is their max shutter speeds. The Sony a7R and a6000 have pretty swift shutter speeds. That of the Sony a7R comes in at 1/8000 second while that of the a6000 comes in at 1/4000 second. Pretty impressive right? What’s even more impressive is that the shutter speeds of these cameras can also slow down to 30 seconds.

With the super fast shutter speeds of these cameras, you get some benefits. One is that fast shutter speeds are great for scenes where there is constant movement. It’s also great for shooting in action scenes.

If the subject in question is moving, you’d need to adjust your shutter speed settings to something faster. A faster shutter speed will help you capture the moving subject frozen in motion. Capturing moving subjects at slower shutter speeds would create a blur which is why cameras always increase shutter speeds for such kinds of photography.

But like we said, the shutter speed is usually a range. In the case of the Sony a7R vs Sony a6000, the range begins at 1/8000 second or 1/4000 second to 30 seconds.

Slower shutter speeds might look like they are without any advantage but they do have their advantages. First off, at slower shutter speeds, more light gets to the sensor since the shutter is open for a longer time. So, for this reason, slower shutter speeds are great when shooting in dark settings.

Also, the blur these cameras create when you shoot moving subjects at slower shutter speeds might also be useful in certain instances. To simulate a sense of speed when creating ads for automobiles or motorbikes, the blur around the wheels help with that.

So, basically, the range of shutter speeds on either of these cameras gives you the leeway to achieve a lot of effects with either of the cameras.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 Common Feature 8: No Image Stabilization

Another common feature we found in our research on the Sony a7R vs Sony a6000 is that they both lack image stabilization. This, affects performance a little bit but not by much since you can easily fix this by working with a tripod stand or any other form of stabilizing gear.

Usually, Sony uses built-in sensor-shift image stabilization for their cameras. But in this case, Sony has no image stabilization system and it’s especially bothersome since the a7R is supposed to be a pro camera.

Another option you could go for in the stabilization of images using these cameras is to get image stabilization lenses. This a more expensive and more inconvenient method as it adds to your gear. However, it’s an option worth exploring especially if you do most of your shooting handheld.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 Common Feature 9: 1080p Video Resolution

The Sony a7R and Sony a6000 are both great cameras when it comes to their video capabilities. Below this section, you’ll find two videos showing you hands-on video tests of each of these cameras so you can confirm things for yourself. These are excellent cameras.

They shoot in 1080 pixels or full HD as they are also called. We know a lot of people look out for 4K video resolution when getting cameras. However, 4K cameras are typically somewhat more expensive plus you’d require a level of expertise to be able to work with 4K.

Besides that, many people, including professionals still shoot in 1080 pixels till now. So, it is good enough. You aren’t really losing anything when going for either of these cameras.

Now, to low light. These cameras do fantastic in low light. However, the Sony a7R does better than the Sony a6000 in low light being a pro camera and all. They make great options for shooting weddings and other indoor settings.

However, here’s the small challenge. The Sony a6000 lacks ports for an external mic and headphones as well. This affects the sound quality of the videos shot with the Sony a6000.

There are ways to combat that though. You could attach an extension to a port on top of the camera on which you can attach an external microphone.

The Sony a7R, on the other hand, comes with inputs for an external microphone as well as headphones. This makes it a much better option for recording serious videos than the Sony a6000.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 Common Feature 10: AE Bracketing

AE bracketing is a feature you’d truly come to appreciate while using either of these cameras. With this feature, you’re assured of capturing your subject with the right level of exposure especially in environments where lighting is tricky or where the brighter and darker areas are constantly varying.

When you turn on AE bracketing, your camera takes three photos with different exposure levels. There’s the one which, according to your camera’s metering, is the best exposure for the subject. But just to give more options, AE bracketing helps your camera take two other photos one on either extreme of the first exposure. So, in essence, one comes under exposed while the other comes over exposed. This way, you get to make your choice.

For more control, you can choose to work with your AE bracketing either in Shutter Priority mode or Aperture Priority mode.

If Shutter Priority, the camera leaves your pre-selected shutter speed as is and varies aperture settings while taking the different photos. If Aperture Priority mode, then the reverse would be the case.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 Common Feature 11: Wireless Connection And NFC Connection

Wireless connection means that with these two cameras, you get to instantly upload your photos and videos, edit them, and instantly share them.

The NFC connection, on the other hand, makes for instant pairing with other devices from your laptops to your smartphones. With just one tap of the button, you can instantly connect to which ever device you want instantly.

These two features together make transfers snappy and hassle-free.

Sony a6000 users encountered a few issues while trying to set up their wireless connection the first time. For some, the issue got resolved on subsequent tries. However, there were those who weren’t able to get it fixed even after several tries. That’s something you might want to keep in mind when considering the Sony a6000.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 – Features Unique To The Sony a7R

Full Frame Sensor

The Sony a7R comes with a full frame sensor which is one unique feature that the camera doesn’t share with the Sony a6000.

Now, the full frame sensor of the Sony a7R is definitely good news. Full frame sensors bring a lot of quality to the table when we discuss images. And then combined with a high resolution sensor, you’d practically drool at the quality of images this camera could produce.

Now because full frame sensors are large, they typically make for larger sensors. But then again, the Sony a7R and Sony a6000 are roughly the same size. Anyway, one thing is sure though, full frame cameras have a lot of advantages.

In the first place, as their names suggest, photos from a full frame camera are more encompassing than photos from a crop sensor. For instance, when you take photos with the Sony a7R and Sony a6000, it looks like the a6000 photo is a cropped version of the a7R photo.

Additionally, full frame cameras give that fantastic shallow depth of field effect that crop sensors can’t really deliver. So, if you’re into those super detailed pictures with all the bokeh, then the Sony a7R is the better camera for you between these two.

Furthermore, full frame cameras are fantastic in low light. They typically have a larger sensor pixel area just as it is in the Sony a7R. This greatly improves their low light capability inadvertently.

But then again full frames are quite expensive being that sensors are the most expensive part of the camera. And then full frames are the most demanding to manufacture due to their size. So, in comparison to other sensor sizes, they typically carry a heftier price tag.

25 Focus Points

The Sony a7R has pretty few focus points so it’s not the fastest autofocus on the block. You might discover that the camera takes a little time to focus when in autofocus mode. But that’s not the only drawback of few focus points.

Fewer focus points also means that it’s hard to use the camera for a subject that’s on the move when the camera is in autofocus mode. Because focus points are not many, it’s very easy for said moving subject to get out focus as they move about. And you don’t have the luxury of pausing and changing focus manually, you’d lose moments.

Naturally, autofocus would have been your rescue but focus points are not enough and if the subject gets out of focus, they don’t get the right exposure and it could ruin the image for you.

But for other kinds of shoots like stills, portraits, landscapes, or architectural, few focus points work just fine. So, for action shoots like sports or wildlife, you might not want to carry the Sony a7R along. The next point we discuss further buttresses that point.

4 Frames Per Second

The continuous shooting feature or burst mode of the Sony a7R further cements our opinion that this camera isn’t for action photography. The camera only shoots at 4 frames per second which is not even enough.

In action scenes, there are fast, unpredictable movements and you could miss out on photography gold if your camera cannot capture enough frames per second. It goes without saying that the Sony a7R is poor in that aspect.

Comparing the Sony a7R vs Sony a6000, the a6000 has a continuous shooting ability of 11 frames. That’s nearly three times that of the Sony a7R!

Weather Sealing

Weather sealing is the process by which camera manufacturers make their cameras weather-proof. They do this by adding a layer of rubber to the camera’s most vulnerable parts. This ensures that, in unpredictable weather, your camera remains safe from moisture and dust which could damage camera parts.

Weather-sealed cameras are more rugged than cameras that aren’t weather-sealed making it a desirable feature when checking out cameras.

The Sony a7R will be able to withstand some light rain and will most likely last a little longer than the Sony a6000.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 – Features Unique To The Sony a6000

APS-C Crop Sensor

We have been comparing the Sony a7R vs Sony a6000 and right now, we’re checking out the unique features of the Sony a6000. We’ve already checked out the sensor of the Sony a7R already and we’ve discovered that that comes as a full frame.

The Sony a6000, on the other hand, comes with a crop sensor which is why photos from Sony a6000 look like a cropped version of the a7R.

This is a semi-pro (or entry-level) camera which is why it’s not surprising that it comes with a crop sensor. Crop sensors are less expensive to make when compared to full frame cameras. So, naturally, the reduced cost of the sensor also impacts on the cost of the Sony a6000.

And besides the immediate cost of buying a crop sensor camera, crop sensors are less expensive to operate especially if you’re into telephotography. Full frame cameras can cost up to 15 to 20 thousand dollars to carry out such kinds of photography. But with crop sensors, it might take just about a third of that total amount.

This is an attractive proposition for beginners who might not have started profiting from photography just yet.

Furthermore, crop sensors are also more compact than full frame sensors. This makes cameras with crop sensors smaller, more compact, and lighter than full frame cameras. In the Sony a7R vs Sony a6000 though, both cameras are about the same size with only a small difference between the two.

Of course crop sensors can’t really compare to full frame sensors when we talk about image quality. It looks tighter than a full frame and also lacks that shallow depth of field that makes your portrait look detailed and amazing.

179 Focus Points

Although many have labeled Sony cameras slow when it comes to autofocus, the Sony a6000 shoots holes into that argument on so many levels. It comes with 179 focus points and is super fast when it comes to autofocus mode. And it isn’t just fast, it’s also super precise as well.

When you use the Sony a6000, looking through the screen, you see this red spot. The red spot helps you see exactly what your camera is focusing on at that moment. If that’s not fine with you, there’s a knob at the top of the camera which allows you to shift the focus where you’d rather have it. And that thing is so precise!

Besides that, the fact that the Sony a6000 has this many focus points, you can use them to take photos of subjects that constantly move. Action photographers and photographers from similar genres would love working with this camera. And there’s another reason for this. Check out our next sub.

The battery life of the Sony a7R sucks. The Sony a6000 also has a poor battery life.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 – General Feeling Among Users

Sony a7R

Sony a6000

The Sony a7R sure had a number of positive reviews from users. We’d say users were mostly satisfied by the camera. Even the price which is slightly over two thousand bucks was okay for most people. Plus, the camera apparently delivered value for money. So, for the most part, people were happy and satisfied.

The size and weight of this camera were also happy points for users with this camera. Despite being a full frame camera, the a7R is still quite lightweight and compact. We saw satisfied customers comment on how easy it was to carry this around easily and conveniently.

Now, a few negatives. Autofocus seemed to be a bit of a problem for customers who used this camera. The camera does not seem to be fast enough and that’s only expected seeing as it has only very few focus points. Not many customers appreciated the fact that it slowed them down.

Of course, battery life was another pain point for users. But then again, we know mirrorless cameras. And we know Sony as well. Battery life generally sucks and that’s something we are getting used to.

Remove all of that though, and the comments were mostly positive. The sensor resolution, of course, got loud accolades from a lot of users. And then the build of the camera itself felt pretty solid as well to most users.

So, overall, customers appreciated the fantastic job Sony was able to achieve with the Sony a7R.
And now to the Sony a6000. Of course, size and weight earned this camera huge points with its users. They loved how the camera was compact enough to make a great travel buddy for all kinds of adventures.

Users also found the image quality of the images from this camera to be quite impressive as well. Many were excited to share their photos and we must say that we also found the photos to be of great quality as well.

However, that was for photos. In video mode, things changed a little bit and a few customers expressed some disappointment even though most were expecting it.

The major pain point for most was that the camera lacked a microphone input. This made the camera a little problematic to use for recording videos.

Nevertheless, when it came to low light, the Sony a6000 blew so many customers’ minds. It’s amazing how a camera at this price point is able to achieve such amazing low light feat.

Now, we observed a most peculiar complaint about overheating from this camera. Apparently, when the camera has recorded for about 30 minutes, it begins to overheat and you have to pause your recording and cool it down a bit.

It might to happen to your camera, but you still want to be on the lookout just in case.

Besides that, menu and battery life were not exactly the Sony a6000’s most loved features. The menu was a little too complicated for some (some even required a tutorial and still didn’t get it). And then the battery life, as usual, sucked.

Overall though, mostly 5 star reviews.

Sony a7R Vs Sony a6000 – Conclusion

So far, we’ve done a feature-by-feature, side-by-side comparison of the Sony a7R vs Sony a6000. This time around, we give our submission. But, of course, the final say primarily resides with you. Here’s what we think.

These two cameras are fantastic in every respect and it’s rather difficult to pick one over the other. It seems quite obvious to pick the Sony a7R over the Sony a6000. However, it doesn’t seem fair. In truth, the Sony a7R does have better, more sophisticated features. But hey, it also has its hefty price tag as well.

The Sony a7R and Sony a6000 are not the same camera. On the one hand, the Sony a7R is a high resolution, full frame camera. The Sony a6000, on the other hand, is also high resolution but a semi-pro (could even pass for entry-level) with a crop sensor. However, they each have unique strengths.

Here’s our recommendation.

If you’re big on detail and you need to take those mind blowing portraits with a shallow depth of field that’s just amazing, then we recommend the Sony a7R.

On the other hand, if you need a small, compact camera with a fantastic burst mode great for sport or wildlife photography, then the Sony a6000.

And then, of course, the more obvious reasons. The Sony a6000 might be a more favorable camera for beginners who haven’t started earning from photography. On the other hand, the Sony a7R might be more within the reach of professional photographers.
