Sony a77II Vs Nikon D7200 – Common Features

Getting into the details of this Sony a77II vs Nikon D7200 comparison, we shall now take a look at the features of these cameras that make them similar.

It is important to note that some of these common features might function slightly differently or better in one than the other. That said, let’s get right to it.

Sony a77II Vs Nikon D7200 Common Feature 1: Wireless Connectivity

There are a lot of features that modern technology has brought to light that has made the work life of a photographer less stressful, and this feature is one of such.

This feature is an embodiment of other features that lets the camera perform specific tasks with other devices without contact or the use of a cord.

With this, sharing your files is super easy and hassle-free. All you need is a stable internet connection. Once you have the two devices connected to the internet, and the location where the files will be sent to, you are good to go.

Finally, there is one even more, interesting wireless ability that these cameras share, and that is the smartphone remote control.

There are a lot of ways to remotely control your camera. However, this is one of the best yet. Why?

Sony a77II Vs Nikon D7200 Common Feature 2: Viewfinder

As we mentioned at the beginning of this section, there are a few features common to the two cameras that function differently, and this feature is one of those.

There are two types of viewfinders; the electronic viewfinder and optical viewfinder. The electronic viewfinder is commonly found in mirrorless cameras. However, some DSLR cameras are built with electronic viewfinders.

In mirrorless cameras, the electronic viewfinder is basically a small electronic display. The photographer looks through the EVF to see the scene being shot which is projected by the lens to the image sensor.

In DSLRs on the other hand, there is a mirror and pentaprism in place, so the EVF functions like the LCD screen of the camera.

When shooting in live mode, the camera mirror is locked up in position, so that the image from the sensor is directly projected at the LCD screen. This is also how electronic viewfinders work in DSLRs.

For optical viewfinders, these typically with the mirror mechanism. The light from the scene passes through the lens, hits the mirror, bounces the light through the pentaprism to the optical viewfinder.

For the cameras in this Sony a77II vs Nikon D7200 comparison, the Sony a77II although being a DSLR is built with an electronic viewfinder. While the Nikon D7200 is built with an optical viewfinder.

The first is a built-in flash, this feature is built as a part of the camera. In situations that require you to have some level of extra lighting, this feature comes in handy. Although it might not solve all light enhancement problems.

For situations where the built-in flash can’t completely do the job, the second feature comes in. This feature is the external flash shoe. This external flash shoe lets you attach an external flash shoe to the camera for better light enhancement and also flash photography.

Sony a77II Vs Nikon D7200 Common Feature 4: RAW Support

Shooting in RAW is basically the uncompressed and unedited version of the image the camera shoots.

There two major formats cameras shoot in, that is JPEG and RAW. JPEG is more commonly used than RAW.

JPEG is accepted by virtually every device and site there is, thanks to its small size. However, the JPEG format of images is already automatically edited and compressed by the camera. This does not affect quality so badly though. So the JPEG format isn’t a poor image quality format, it just isn’t the best.

RAW format isn’t as widely accepted as JPEG. However, it is the best image quality the camera can offer. Being uncompressed and unedited means that the images will be of very large sizes. But hey, that is a small price to pay for the quality and flexibility you get working with the RAW photos.

Sony a77II Vs Nikon D7200 Common Feature 5: Face Detection Focus

This feature is important for those who’ll be doing portrait photography. Face detection in a camera, as the name suggests, detects human faces present in the scene being shot. This helps the camera to automatically set the proper exposure and focus.

Face detection is also an advantage for you when shooting with a flash. It automatically removes the red-eye effect that the flash might cause in the image.

Both the Sony a77II and Nikon D7200 have this feature.

Sony a77II Vs Nikon D7200 Common Feature 6: Number Of Focus Points

Focus points, popularly called autofocus points are what the camera uses when focusing on a subject.

These focus points are usually seen through the viewfinder or LCD screen. These points are seen when you push the shutter button halfway, you would see a number of points on the screen light up in colored boxes (commonly green or red).

With this feature, whatever point the camera would be focusing on would light up on the screen. This makes focusing on subjects easier, especially when the subject to be focused on isn’t at the center of the scene.

Sony a77II Vs Nikon D7200 Common Feature 7: Sensor Resolution

When it comes to photography, there are three major factors that the sensor resolution of a camera affect. These factors are: print size, cropping, and downsampling.

For the print size, this is the most mentioned factor determined by the sensor resolution of the camera. The higher the sensor resolution of the camera, the larger the potential print size of the images shot.

As for cropping, it is a very important function for wildlife and sports photographers. This is because they usually can’t get as close as they might want to the action they are shooting. So, most times, they end having other things in the picture besides the intended subjects.

This requires the photographer to resort to heavy cropping, and cropping reduces the quality of the image. However, when the camera used to shoot has a high sensor resolution, the image still retains some quality even after cropping.

Finally, downsampling, this just basically the process of shooting an image at a higher resolution and reducing the resolution. This function is very useful in reducing the amount of noise in the image.

It is obvious that reducing the resolution of the image will reduce quality. However, if the resolution is very high, by the time downsampling is done the image will still have some level of quality.

Sony a77II Vs Nikon D7200 Common Feature 8: Microphone Port

If you intend to use the camera for shooting videos – especially in public places – then this feature is essential for your work.

The presence of a microphone port on your camera means that you’ll be able to hook up your camera with an external microphone. This is an important benefit as it pertains to your audio quality. External microphones only pick sound unidirectionally, that is, from the direction in which it is pointed. In other words, it won’t pick up surrounding sound which is important when shooting videos where audio is very important, especially A-roll.

Now, cameras are usually built with internal microphones, just as these two are. However, this internal mic might only be useful if you are shooting indoors. The internal mic tends to record all the sounds it detects from the environment, which makes the audio quality of your video quite poor.

So, if you’ll be doing interviews at public events, the internal microphone doesn’t have the ability to pick the voice of only one person at a time, that’s what makes the external microphone port very important.

With all these, both of the cameras in this Sony a77II vs Nikon D7200 comparison would be great for taking videos, as they both possess this feature.

Sony a77II Vs Nikon D7200 Common Feature 9: Environmental Sealing

For any form of shooting, that’ll be done outdoors, this feature is essential if the camera will last long for you. Some of the major causes of damage to a camera are usually done by elements from harsh weather conditions.

So, in other to keep the camera safe from these elements that could damage the camera, a sealing made of rubber and silicon is usually used to overlay vulnerable parts of the camera to ensure durability.

Now, if you’ll be picking any of the cameras in this Sony a77II vs Nikon D7200 comparison for outdoor photography, then you have nothing to worry about when it comes to damage by elements. They are both adequately weather-sealed.

Sony a77II Vs Nikon D7200 Common Feature 10: Continuous Shooting

This is a shooting mode on the camera that is also known as Burst mode. When shooting in this mode, the camera continues to take shots of the scene as long as your finger remains on the shutter button.

Successive shots are taken as a result of this, giving you a collection of shots taken in the same time frame to pick from.

Both the Sony a77II and Nikon D7200 do well in continuous shooting mode. However, the number of frames per second the Sony a77II shoots in burst mode is double that of the Nikon D7200.

Sony a77II Vs Nikon D7200 Common Feature 11: LCD Screen Resolution

The LCD screen of the camera is a feature that comes in handy a lot of times, especially when it is impossible to use the viewfinder.

The LCD screen also helps in framing images before shooting in the absence of a viewfinder. The higher the resolution of the LCD screen the better the view it provides you.

High-resolution screens show better quality and more details of the images being shot. However, it is important to note that LCD screens are known to drain a lot of battery power when constantly used.

For the Sony a77II and Nikon D7200, they both have very high resolutions for their LCD screen. They also have the exact same values for their LCD screen resolution.

Image Stabilization

When shooting, there are tendencies of experiencing some form of unexpected or abrupt movement while the shutter is open, this results in shaky images.

In other to avoid this, the common solution is to keep the camera stable on a tripod stand or table. However, there are some situations that do not permit you to use these methods.

For situations where all shooting has to be done with the camera handheld, this feature is what camera makers have added to save you from the horrors of turning out with blurry photos.

Image stabilization is a feature that works with two gyro-sensors, these sensors detect the magnitude and angle of the movement the camera has undergone and counter it.

This process is what takes out the blur in the resulting photo. However, it is important to note that, if the camera suffers a heavy shove while the shutter is still open, then image stabilization will not function in that situation.

Articulated Screen

When shooting, it is important to always get a preview of the screen before shooting, and there are two features that help with that – the viewfinder and LCD screen.

There are some situations where getting a preview with the viewfinder isn’t convenient. In situations like this, the articulated screen becomes a necessity.

An articulated screen is a screen that has the ability to move. Apart from being very helpful in situations that won’t let you use the viewfinder, it gives you the ability to be as flexible as possible with changing positions.

Articulated screens come in three types; tilting or tiltable articulated screen, fully-articulated screen, and cross-tilt or flex-tilt articulated screen.

The tiltable articulated screen has the ability to move about just one axis, therefore, it can only tilt slightly upwards and downwards.

The fully-articulated screen has the ability to move about to angles that at a right angle to each other. This screen can both tilt and swivel.

Finally, the cross-tilt screen has the ability to move about various angles, thereby moving horizontally, vertically and even rotating a certain angle, while still staying aligned to the axis of the lens.

Time-lapse Recording

In photography, Time-lapse is a technique that involves having the frequency at which the frames are captured more spread out than the frequency used in viewing it.

An example is shooting a video at 1 frame per second, then played at 30 or 40 frames per second, when played back the video will be 30 or 40 times faster than normal.

This feature allows for making very creative videos. With this feature, a phenomenon that could take hours or even days can be viewed in seconds.

ISO Range

ISO basically determines how sensitive the sensor of the camera is to light. The higher the value of the ISO, the more sensitive to light the sensor is.

This feature is very important for shooting in low light environments. However, the higher the ISO of the camera, the noisier the photo might turn out to be.

Now to why this feature is mentioned as unique to the Nikon D7200. The two cameras have great equal values for the ISO range, however, that is their natural ISO range.

The ISO range of the Nikon D7200 can be expanded to a higher number that is way past the natural ISO – a feature that is unique to the Nikon D7200 alone.
