Circumstances They Are Best Suited For — Sony a6300 vs Fuji XT20

Sony a6300

Fuji XT20

Although this is a semi-pro camera, it will serve you well if you shoot events or do stuff for your own self.

Yes, this camera cannot be compared to some of the professional stuff out there. However, the quality you get with this camera, especially looking at how affordable it is, makes you think twice about opting for the bigger cameras.
This is one of the reasons why many people opt for mirrorless cameras. With mirrorless cameras, you have a lot of brands creating really amazing cameras at affordable prices. With DSLRs, it’s pretty much competition between Nikon and Canon.

FujiFilm has really done something with this camera. And unsurprisingly, this is more affordable than the Sony a6300, with similar quality standards.
One thing often associate mirrorless cameras with is their size and weight. For reasons we will soon see in this Sony a6300 Vs Fuji XT20 comparison article, mirrorless cameras are usually smaller and lighter than their DSLR equivalent.

This camera is no exception. It is so compact, that you can travel around with this without needing to take any extra bag. This camera can stay in a small bag, a purse, or even a big pocket.

To have something that small, but still similar quality to some of the bigger stuff, is really nice.
This camera is significantly lighter than the Sony a6300. However, looking at Sony a6300 Vs Fuji XT20, the Fuji XT20 is a lot more tactile.

Because of this, it is not as compact as the Sony a6300, and in fact, the Sony a6300 is quite smaller than this camera.

However, this is still a small-sized, lightweight camera that packs a similar punch as some of the bigger boys.
As we all know, you can’t get everything with these budget-friendly devices. There must be one feature, or the other, that isn’t present.

For these two cameras- Sony a6300 Vs Fuji XT20, it’s a full-frame sensor. Both of these cameras come with an APS-C sensor.
Yes, this camera also comes with an APS-C sensor. While that might not be good news for a lot of people, a lot of others do not care.

We’ll talk about how it affects your pictures later in this article.
One part where neither of these cameras do well is in battery. Neither of these cameras have a solid battery life. If you get this camera, you need to get some extra batteries to shoot for a long time. This camera’s battery is also not very good. In fact, it is slightly worse than the Sony a6300. So, if you ever decide on getting this camera, better keep some extra batteries with you all the time.

They’re Both Mirrorless Cameras

The first mirrorless camera was created in 2004. However, this new camera technology was not embraced by the public until the big brand, Sony, got into the picture. With Sony’s great branding and awesome technology, people began to embrace mirrorless cameras, more and more.

Today, there is a big divide, often accompanied by arguments between DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Some people think that new technology ought to be embraced, while others think that DSLRs are old but gold. What do we think? Well, we think that both of them have their strengths and weaknesses. Choosing one will ultimately come down to which satisfies your needs more.

One thing we do like about the mirrorless camera industry, though, is that there are a lot more players. With DSLRs, you kinda have this big Nikon and Canon duopoly, whereas, with mirrorless cameras, you have a host of other brands also producing really great stuff, at affordable prices. You can see that in the second camera of the Sony a6300 Vs Fuji XT20 comparison.

We’re sure at this point, you’re wondering how exactly the mirrorless camera works. Well, to find out how these cameras work, we have to first look at how the DSLR camera works.

How Does The Mirrorless Camera Work?

In a mirrorless camera, there is no mirror, obviously. On the other hand, in a DSLR, you have a mirror mechanism inside. This mirror mechanism consists of a mirror and a prism. It is used to transfer light to the camera’s optical viewfinder, so the photographer can frame his shot.

The light outside the camera enters the camera through its lens. When the shutter is closed, the mirror covers the camera’s film. So, the light hits the mirror, on which it splits. One part of this light is sent upwards to the prism. This prism then flips the light to be horizontal and then transfers it to the optical viewfinder. The second part of the light is sent to an autofocus sensor.

When the shutter is opened (when the shutter button is clicked), the mirror flips upwards. This allows the light coming through the lens to hit the camera’s film directly, thereby, capturing the image. The movement of the camera is what generates the shutter sound of the DSLR, which we’ve all grown familiar with.

With a mirrorless camera, you have an electronic viewfinder, not an optical viewfinder. There is no mirror, or prism, or autofocus sensor, either. Light comes in through the camera’s lens. This light hits an electronic sensor that is responsible for converting this light to a digital image. This digital image is then transferred to the electronic viewfinder, for the photographer to frame his shot.

In some budget mirrorless cameras, there is no electronic viewfinder. In that case, the image is sent to an LCD screen instead.

Now that we’ve seen how these two camera types work, let’s look at the differences between them.

Differences Between DSLRs and Mirrorless Cameras

DSLRs

Mirrorless Cameras

Size DSLRs are a lot bigger than mirrorless cameras. This is because they have to fit in all those mechanical parts inside. Mirrorless cameras don’t need to fit in a mirror and prism inside them, just an electronic sensor, which is very thin.

Because of that, they are usually a lot smaller, more compact, and lighter than DSLRs.
Battery Life Well, if there was ever a reason to not dump your DSLR for a mirrorless camera, this is it. DSLRs have way better battery lives than mirrorless cameras, and this is for a few reasons:

1. They are bigger, which means they house a bigger battery. A bigger battery equals a bigger battery capacity.

2. They don’t need power for a lot of their functionalities. DSLRs depend more on mechanical parts. These parts are not power draining, hence why their batteries last longer, they don’t power much.
The battery lives of mirrorless cameras can be really bad, abysmal to even say.

The professional and bigger mirrorless cameras try in this department. However, even those ones are no match for the battery lives of DSLR cameras.

With mirrorless cameras, you cannot forget to carry an extra battery with you, wherever you go.
Continuous Shooting DSLRs have a lot of moving parts. When the shutter is clicked, the mirror has to flip upwards, before the picture is taken.

This movement hinders and reduces the continuous shooting rate of these cameras.
Mirrorless cameras have better continuous shooting than DSLRs. You can see it in the two cameras we’re looking at today. One shoots 11 frames per second, the other, 14.

You cannot find this in semi-pro DSLRs in the same price range.
Viewfinder DSLRs use optical viewfinders. Mirrorless cameras use electronic viewfinders, which we would discuss separately, in this article.

Electronic Viewfinders

Which uses electronic viewfinders: Sony a6300 or Fuji XT20?

Both the Sony a6300 and the Fuji XT20 make use of electronic viewfinders.

In the most basic terms, the difference between these two is that optical viewfinders see raw light, while electronic viewfinders see a digital image. With optical viewfinders, what you’re seeing is the same thing your bare eyes would see. On the other hand, with an electronic viewfinder, what you see is a live preview of the image, exactly how it will be captured by the camera.

The only advantage that the optical viewfinder has over the electronic viewfinder is that you can use it while the camera is off. Say you see a good photo you want to take but your camera’s battery is quite low. With the optical viewfinder, you can easily frame the photo perfectly, then simply turn on the camera to take the shot, saving the battery. You can’t do this with an electronic viewfinder as the camera has to be on for it to work.

Apart from that, there’s really nothing that optical viewfinders do better than electronic viewfinders. With an electronic viewfinder, you can a live preview as you’re tweaking settings. If you’re not a professional who knows exactly how images will turn out in different settings, this is very helpful. You can edit the focus, the exposure, the ISO, and see exactly how those changes will affect your image, without clicking the shutter button. With this, once you hit the shutter button, you’re sure about what the image will look like.

Finally, we strongly advise against buying a mirrorless camera without a viewfinder. Yes, you can see this live preview on the LCD screen. However, we all know how difficult it is to use screens outside when the sun is out.

Wireless Connection

Which has the wireless connection feature: Sony a6300 or Fuji XT20?

The Sony a6300 and the Fuji XT20 can wirelessly connect to the internet, as well as, to other devices. With this functionality, you can easily transfer files from your camera to another device, or upload it on to the internet.

Also, with this, you can download multiple applications straight on to your camera. These applications are help make your shoot a whole lot easier. One thing that’s quite a bummer with these two cameras, though, is that neither of them comes with Bluetooth connectivity. Bluetooth connectivity would have made it a whole lot easier to transfer files with other devices, looking at how many devices come with Bluetooth.

There is one slight difference in the implementation of the wireless connection on these two cameras. The Sony a6300 comes with NFC communication, while the Fuji XT20 does not. What this feature does is quite simple. It is an acronym that stands for “Near Field Communication”. This allows your camera to immediately connect to paired compatible devices, once they’re close by.

With this, you don’t have to connect your smartphone to your camera, over and over again. All you have to do is pair them once, and then they’ll keep connecting to each other once they’re close.

This feature is on the Sony a6300 is what allows you to use your smartphone as a remote control. However, you can use your smartphone as a remote control for the Fuji XT20, just not with NFC. You do it just with the smartphone app.

Articulating Screens

Which has an articulating screen: Sony a6300 or Fuji XT20?

Both the Sony a6300 and Fuji XT20 have articulating/tilting screens. Tilting screens are necessary as they help you frame your shots when shooting in positions that you cannot use your viewfinder in.

There are certain positions you would need to shoot it where it will not be possible to use your electronic viewfinder to frame your shots. In this scenario, if you have a still LCD screen, it is of no use, as it is in the same direction of your viewfinder, so you cannot use it either.

With a tilting screen, you will be able to frame your photos from these awkward positions. One thing you have to remember, though, is the sunlight. Once you’re outside, the rays of the sun will make it difficult to use the LCD screen. If you can, get a small shade for the screen, so it’s covered from the rays of the sun, making it easy for you to see.

Although this is really helpful, we feel like these companies could have done one better. Neither of these LCD screens can tilt well enough to allow you to frame a selfie. This is not a big deal, though, but it would’ve been nice to see.

Built-in Flash

Which has a built-in flash: Sony a6300 or Fuji XT20?

Both the Sony a6300 and Fuji XT20 come with built-in flashes. With this, you don’t have to carry an external flash around. You can keep your camera kit as small as possible, and still get good lighting for your low-light shots.

If you must use an external flash, maybe this flash is not bright enough, both of these cameras also come with external flash shoes. These shoes help you attach an external flash to your camera when necessary.

Having these two options with these two cameras is really nice. When you want a really small kit and don’t need too much light, leave your external flash at home and make do with the built-in flash.

RAW Support

Which supports RAW file format: Sony a6300 or Fuji XT20?

Both the Sony a6300 and the Fuji XT20 support the RAW file format. RAW is an image saving format. It is the image saving format that all digital cameras initially save their images as. However, many digital cameras do not support saving images in this format. So, after taking the image, the camera edits it, compresses it, and then converts it into a JPEG image.

A lot of photographers do not like this process because- firstly, the camera adds things like contrast and brightness to the image as it sees fit, which may not be what the photographer wants. Secondly, during the process of compressing, a lot of information on the image is lost.

When you save pictures in their RAW format, you have a lot more information on the pictures. The camera hasn’t done anything to these images. With all the information present on these images, you can edit them exactly into your taste, before converting them into JPEG by yourself.

One thing you have to know about RAW images, though, is that they’re very large. If you want to shoot RAW images, make sure you have enough space on your SD card.

Face Detection Focus

This is really good for portrait photos. In the most basic terms, the camera focuses on any face, or faces, once they’re in the frame. If that’s not what you want the focus on, you can easily change this.

Microphone Port

Which has a microphone port: Sony a6300 or Fuji XT20?

Both the Sony a6300 and the Fuji XT20 have a microphone port. With a microphone port, you can connect your camera to an external microphone. This external microphone will then collect high-quality audio which your camera will record alongside the video.

Recording video is something that a lot of people do with their cameras. If you’re one of those people, we’re sure you also want the ability to record quality audio alongside the video. That’s what this feature does for you.

AE Bracketing

Which has the AE Bracketing feature: Sony a6300 or Fuji XT20

The Sony a6300 and the Fuji XT20 both have the AE bracketing feature.
With this feature, you can set different exposure settings for the same scene, click the shutter button, and get several images of that scene with your different preset settings.

This is why cameras come with this feature “AE Bracketing” this is otherwise known as Auto Exposure Bracketing. Exposure is something that is important for all images. If you’re a photographer, we’re sure you’re already well aware of how important the right exposure setting is. However, the fact that getting it right is so important, doesn’t make it any easier.

Because exposure is such an important pillar of photography, we want to give you all the information you can get about this feature. However, so this article doesn’t stretch more than it ought to, we found all the information you might need in the video below. If you want to know everything about auto exposure bracketing, check it out:

There is a slight difference in the auto exposure bracketing of these two cameras, though, check out the table below:

Sony a6300 – What Are The Unique Features?

The following are the unique features of Sony a6300:

1. Environmental sealing maximum ISO

2. sealing maximum ISO

Environmental Sealing

Shooting in tough weather conditions is something that can be very helpful. We’re sure you won’t like it if you’re shooting outdoors, the weather changes, and you have to immediately stop shooting and run indoors.

The Sony a6300 is made with a magnesium alloy frame. With this frame, this camera is shielded from both moisture and dust. From this, you can see that you can keep using this camera even if it’s drizzling or windy outside.

Maximum ISO

This camera has a maximum ISO of 25,600. With this wide ISO range, you can rest assured that your camera will get enough light, no matter the lighting conditions you’re shooting in. This maximum is 100% more than the maximum ISO provided by the Fuji XT20, which is simply, superb.

Touchscreen

The LCD screen on this camera has a touchscreen feature. With this touchscreen feature, you can communicate with your camera the same way you would communicate with your smartphone.

Time-lapse Recording

Although the Sony a6300 can record time-lapses, it can only be done with an external application. The Fuji XT20, on the other hand, can record time-lapses, straight out of the box.

If you do not know what a time-lapse is, it simply is taking several images of a particular scene. These images are usually taken by the camera at set intervals. The purpose of shooting a time-lapse is to show the passage of time, showing how things change over time. Once these images are compiled, they form a video in which these changes appear a lot faster than they actually are in real life.

UHS Memory Card Support

The Fuji XT20 supports the use of UHS memory cards. UHS means Ultra High Speed. Basically, this type of memory card reads and transfers files with ultra-high speeds. This camera supports the use of UHS-II memory cards.

This particular type of memory card can also be used on other devices that do not support them. However, on those devices, they will read and write information with the same speed as normal SD cards.

Sony a6300

Fuji XT20

No Image Stabilization Neither of these cameras comes with image stabilization technology. This means that with these cameras, you have to be absolutely still when recording videos and taking pictures.

Also, no headphone jack.

What Do People Think About These Cameras — Sony a6300 vs Fuji XT20?

Sony a6300

Fuji XT20

While a lot of people like to give new brands a try, many others feel like they need to stick to the bigger boys. People who bought this camera belong to that school of thought.

People who bought this camera were able to get into the Sony mirrorless camera ecosystem. Getting into this ecosystem, it becomes easier to upgrade to similar, but better cameras, and also use the different lenses and accessories made available by Sony.
Being an emerging brand, Fujifilm has done a lot to penetrate the market. This camera, Fuji XT20, is one amongst their variety of mirrorless cameras that you can pick up at really affordable prices.

A lot of people love this camera because of that fact.
One thing that people really liked about this camera, more than the Fuji XT20, which is not often talked about is the grip.

Although slightly heavier, the grip on this camera is a lot deeper. This is something that has grown synonymous with Sony cameras.

With this dip, you get a better grip of your camera. This is really healthy as you won’t always have the fear of your camera falling off.
The grip on this camera is not very firm. It isn’t deep enough for your hand to hold firmly. However, people who bought this really like how light it feels on the hand.

Honestly, when you’re holding this, it feels like you’re not holding anything. It’s so small and compact that you can keep it in a purse as you go out.
Another thing people often commended about this camera is the menu and easy-to-get-to settings.

The navigation on this camera is actually really good. Being that this camera does not come with touchscreen functionality, this is super nice to see.
The menu of this camera was not very easy to get to. However, this was often overlooked because of how tactile this camera is.

Almost all the buttons and settings you need are on buttons around this camera. In fact, for most people, after getting acquainted with the controls on the body of this camera, they did not need to enter the menu anymore.
One thing people did not really fancy about this camera, though, is the battery life. Although this is something that is synonymous with mirrorless cameras, this one is really bad. The battery on this camera is also miserable, to be honest. To use this camera, we advise you to always keep some extra batteries with you.

These two cameras- Sony a6300 vs Fuji XT20, are really affordable semi-pro mirrorless cameras. If you’re a professional who doesn’t have the budget for the bigger cameras, then these cameras will work really well for you.

Because they’re so similar, picking between these two cameras Sony a6300 vs Fuji XT20 often comes down to look and feel. And on that note, we would have to say that the Fuji XT20 just edges slightly over the Sony a6300. Apart from its cold looks, the touchscreen feature, faster continuous shooting rate, support for UHS memory card, and time-lapse recording helped us to come to this conclusion. Plus, it’s slightly more affordable than the Sony a6300.
