Overall Rating Of The Sony a6000 Vs Canon M50

Generally, both the Sony a6000 and the Canon EOS M50 can be considered really good camera. They both have a decent maximum resolution and support the RAW format. As a result, they both take really good quality photos.

You need to know, though, that the Canon M50 does better with the videos. It just comes with a few more features than the Sony a6000 does that make it the better video camera. We’ll discuss these features next.

Rating Of The Features Of The Sony a6000 Vs Canon M50

As we already said, we consider both cameras really good cameras. And what better way to ascertain this than by looking at their features.

Now, both cameras are mirrorless cameras. Hence, they both come without a mirror and an optical viewfinder. They also are both lightweight, do not have a very long battery life and, thankfully, both come with an electronic viewfinder.

They also share a number of similar features that have nothing to do with being mirrorless. They include wireless connection, smartphone control, built-in flash and an external flash shoe.

Now, specificity is where things get interesting. The Sony a6000 has a continuous shot rate that is just 1 more than that of the Canon M50 (11 frames as against 10 frames). It also has a few more focus points (179 vs 143).

On the other hand, the Canon M50 comes with a microphone port, a touch screen and has a better video resolution than the Sony a6000 (3840 x 2160 vs 1920 x 1080). These are basically the features that makes it the better camera for recording videos.

They both also share a couple of weaknesses. One, they both do not have an image stabilization feature. However, that is correctable by getting optical stabilization lenses. Two, they both are not weather protected.

Which has a better price/value ratio: Sony a6000 or Canon M50?

Both the Sony a6000 and the Canon M50 are decently priced and you basically get what you pay for. However, you need to know that the Canon M50 costs a bit more than the Sony a6000.

Sony is a Japanese brand that can best be described as a conglomerate. It has its fingers in a number of different ventures including entertainment, electronics and gaming.

Canon

Canon, on the other hand, is also a Japanese company. Now, while it is not as wide spread in its ventures as the Sony brand, it is no less impressive. Canon has also garnered a decent following for itself which could be traced to the quality of products it pushes out into the market.

Common Features — Sony a6000 Vs Canon M50

Here are the things the Sony a6000 and Canon M50 have in common:

i. They are mirrorless.

ii. Light weight

iii. Electronic viewfinder

iv. Articulating screen

v. Built-in flash

vi. Battery capacity

vii. Wireless connection

viii. Continuous shooting

ix. ISO range

x. Sensor resolution

xi. RAW support

xii. Face detection focus

xiii. USH memory card support

xiv. Time-lapse recording

We will now look at each of these features in detail…

1. Mirrorless

This one factor is responsible for a good number of similarities between the Sony a6000 and the Canon M6. You’ll get to find out those factors in a bit.

To understand the concept of a mirrorless camera, you’ll have to understand it relative to a DSLR camera. And the basic difference between a DSLR and a mirrorless camera is the presence/absence of a mirror and an optical viewfinder.

Here is how things work when you try to take a picture. With a DSLR, light passes through the attached lenses and hits the mirror. Said light then bounces off the mirror, part of it hitting the optical viewfinder and the other part going to the Autofocus Sensor.

However, a mirrorless camera does not come with a mirror and an optical viewfinder. So, when the light passes through the attached lens, it heads straight to the sensor. Now, instead of light, the sensor sends a digital image to the electronic viewfinder or the LCD screen.

2. Weight

The Sony a6000 and the Canon M50 do not exactly weigh the same but they can both be broadly classified as lightweight cameras. This isn’t exactly surprising seeing as mirrorless cameras are wont to weigh significantly less than DSLR cameras because of the absence of a mirror.

The Sony a6000 weighs 0.76 pounds while the Canon M6 weighs 0.86 pounds. We seriously do not consider the 0.1 pound difference between these cameras significant enough to make us swing one way or the other.

However, in determining the weight of a camera, we cannot just rely on the weight of the camera body. Lenses will be attached to the camera at some point or the other. So, we have to factor in the weight of the lenses.

That said, we do not necessarily have to find out the weight of every individual lens that each camera comes with. What you do need to know is that they both have the same sized APS-C sensor.

As a result, for the same aperture and focal length, both cameras will require lenses of similar weight and size. What this means is that, while the weight of the lenses might be significant enough to increase the weight of the camera, it isn’t significant enough to make one camera heavier than the other.

3. Viewfinder

Remember how we told you that mirrorless cameras do not come with an optical viewfinder? Well, here is the thing; while some of them decide to skip the viewfinder thing totally, others substitute the optical viewfinder for an electronic viewfinder.

For those cameras that skip the viewfinder altogether, they almost always come with an external viewfinder stand. In that case, you can decide to get an external viewfinder or stick to the LCD screen.

We advise that you get an external viewfinder if you ever get that kind of mirrorless camera. This is because out in the sun or under very bright light, you might struggle to see images on the screen.

Anyway, thankfully, both the Sony a6000 and the Canon M50 come with an in-built viewfinder. This is really convenient as you need not bother about whether or whether not to get a viewfinder.

4. Articulating Screen

An articulating screen is basically that kind of screen that can be moved (tilted or rotated) without having to move the camera body. The idea is for you to be able to take photos from certain angles that you wouldn’t get with a fixed screen.

That said, there are basically two kinds of articulating screen. There is the tilting screen that can be moved upward and then back down again. The degrees to which a tilting screen can be moved varies from camera to camera.

The other kind is the fully articulating screen. This kind can basically be rotated. It allows you even more angles than a tilting screen and gives you the freedom to properly video yourself. That said, the Sony a6000 has a tilting screen while the Canon M50 has a fully articulating screen.

Furthermore, both cameras have a 3 inch screen. However, of these two cameras, only the Canon M50 has a touch screen.

5. Built-In Flash

At some point or the other in your photography game, you’ll find yourself trying to take pictures in places where the light just isn’t enough. Those are the times when you’ll appreciate the presence of a flash.

Now, not all cameras come with the flash built-in. However, both the Sony a6000 and the Canon M50 do and this in-built flash will definitely come in handy in low-light situations.

In addition to that, both cameras come with an external flash port. You can attach an external flash to either camera and this flash will come in handy if you want to do flash photography.

6. Battery Life

Mirrorless cameras have, overtime, become notorious for their not so impressive battery life. We must confess that some mirrorless cameras actually try to break from that norm. However, the Sony a6000 and the Canon M50 are not one of those cameras.

The Sony a6000 has a battery life of 360 shots per charge. Now this is, by no means, the most impressive battery life a camera can have. However, the Canon M50 has an even shorter battery life of 235 shots per charge.

Anyway, one man’s meat could be another man’s poison. So, while we do not consider the battery life of either camera something to be reckoned with, it might be enough to take care of your needs.

7. Wireless Connection

In this digital age, more and more devices are coming with features that allow them internet access. For some, you’ll need an external attachment for this internet access while others have the feature built-in.

Thankfully, both the Sony a6000 and the Canon M50 have the wireless connection feature built-in. So, provided there is a Wi-Fi connection, you’ll be able to connect to the internet.

In addition to that, both cameras can be controlled from a smartphone. You’ll need to download the appropriate app and then connect said smartphone to the camera. Then from the smartphone, you can take your shots with the screen acting as your LCD screen.

8. Continuous Shooting

Now, here is one mode that allows for speed. On the continuous shooting mode, the camera can take more than one shot in just one second and with one click of the shutter button.

That said, allow us start by saying that there are cameras with more impressive continuous shooting rate. However, both the Sony a6000 and the Canon M50 have an impressive continuous shooting rate. 11 frames per second for the Sony a6000 and 10 frames per second for the Canon M50 is not bad at all.

9. ISO Range

Want to know how sensitive your camera is to light; that is how much light it can take in at certain points, check the ISO. A high ISO shows that your camera is very sensitive to light while a low ISO shows that your camera isn’t so sensitive to light.

Now, here is how things work. If you set your camera to a high ISO, the camera is able to take in as much light as necessary. As a result, you’d best use a high ISO if you are in a low light situation.

The camera tries to compensate for the low light by letting in as much light as the setting allows. However, in the process, the camera could gather a lot of grains.

On the other hand, if you set your camera to a low ISO, the camera tries not to take in as much light as it normally would. This makes a low ISO the better option for places where the lighting is just too bright.

Knowing all these, it becomes important to have a wide ISO range. This allows you a wide range of ISO choices to choose from.

That said, the Sony a6000 and the Canon M50 have basically the same ISO range; from 100 to 25600. However, that of the Sony a6000 can be expanded to 51200.

10. Sensor Resolution

The sensor resolution tells us how detailed photos taken with a camera will be. That said, both the Sony a6000 and the Canon M50 do really well with the picture resolution. They both offer 24 megapixels of picture resolution which guarantees you more details with your pictures.

11. RAW Support

In addition to taking good pictures, it is imperative that the pictures taken be saved in their original quality. This brings us to the format in which a photo is saved.

That said, photos saved RAW format, as opposed to jpeg, get saved in their original quality. This is, of course, good news, seeing as they both offer good quality pictures. You’ll bear in mind, though, that photos stored in RAW format take up a bit of space.

12. Face Detection Focus

Both the Sony a6000 and the Canon M50 come with the face detection focus feature. What this means is that when you take a picture, either camera is able to detect and focus on faces. This makes both cameras really good at taking portraits.

13. UHS Memory Card Support

You know how cameras need to have a memory card slotted in where photos taking will be saved. Well, there are different kinds of memory cards and not all of them are compatible with all kinds of cameras.

One of those memory cards that are not compatible with all the cameras is the Ultra High Speed memory card. As the name suggests, the Ultra High Speed (UHS) memory card allows pictures to be transferred from buffer to storage in high speeds.

That said, both the Sony a6000 and the Canon M50 are compatible with the Ultra High Speed memory card; the UHS-I to be precise.

14. Time Lapse Recording

In this mode, the camera records in low frequency. Now, when this video is played back, it plays faster than normal. There’s so much you can do with this feature as you explore your creativity.

However, while the Canon M50 comes factory set to be able to be able to time lapse record, you’ll have to download an app to time lapse record on the Sony a6000.

Unique Features — Sony a6000 vs Canon M50

Which has an external microphone jack: Sony a6000 or Canon M50?

The Canon M50 comes with an external microphone jack. This makes it the better camera for recording videos and such. Cameras are not only used to take photos, they can also be used to record videos. This is why they are fitted with in-built microphones.

However, microphones that come with cameras aren’t exactly the best at recording audio. They tend to pick up a lot of noise in addition to what they are meant to pick up.

Hence, it becomes imperative that you get an external microphone; the kind that will pick up the sounds you want exclusively. However, to attach a microphone to a camera, there has to be a provision for it on said camera.

Which allows for a one touch wireless connection: Sony a6000 or Canon M50?

The Near Field Communication (NFC) feature which the Sony a6000 comes with allows you to create a one touch wireless connection with an NFC compatible device.

Which has more lenses available: Sony a6000 or Canon M50?

Furthermore, neither the Sony a6000 nor the Canon M50 comes with an image stabilization feature. As a result, pictures taken with this camera could come out looking all blurry because the camera was moved mid-shot.

To balance things out, you’ll need to get optical stabilization lenses. The Sony a6000 has 23 of those lenses available while the Canon M50 has just four of those lenses available.

Can Canon m50 Shoot raw?

Canon m50 shoots smaller C-Raw files in a CR3 format. Canon’s EOS m50 is the first camera in their range of cameras that comes with the Digic 8 processor which allows for raw shots.

Images captured with m50 are both in 4k and 1080p and this is quite impressive. While in 1080p, the DPAF is excellent. This is confirmed in our review where it was tested with the 5D MK IV and C200. It also performs well for the size and price it comes at especially when you are using the EOS adapter.

Is Canon m50 good in low light?

The Canon m50 gives a good performance in low light with noise that is properly controlled even in high ISO settings. The Raw files come out fine even at ISO 6400 with less luminance noise and there’s hardly a sign of chroma or color noise.

The Canon m50 also gives a good account of itself in terms of dynamic range. While it doesn’t offer the same latitude just as some other advanced DSLR cameras do when processing raw files, it is a good fit for the price. Coming at a good price makes you save cost while getting a good result with your camera.
