Sony a6000 Vs Canon 70D – Common Features

In this section, we’ll be looking at how similar the Sony a6000 vs the Canon 70D are. To do this, we’ll be looking at those features that both cameras have in common. These features could either be exactly alike or could be mostly alike with only slight differences. Let’s get right to it!

1. Viewfinder

The viewfinder is one important part of the camera and is one of those features that are mostly alike. The basic similarity both cameras share in this area is that they actually come with a viewfinder.

If you read through our comparison overview, you’d have come to know that having a viewfinder on a camera isn’t exactly a forgone thing.

Well, as we mentioned, DSLR cameras always come with an optical viewfinder; that is a forgone thing. On the other hand, mirrorless cameras do not always come with a viewfinder. Some just come with a port to which you can attach an external viewfinder.

That said, both the Sony a6000 and the Canon 70D come with a viewfinder. However, in keeping with the kind of camera they are, the Sony a6000 comes with an electronic viewfinder while the Canon 70D comes with the Canon 70D comes with an optical viewfinder.

2. Articulating Screen

An articulating screen is a camera screen that can be moved in certain directions (depending on the kind of screen it is) without having to move the camera body. The idea of this kind of screen is for you to be able to capture images from certain angles that a fixed screen wouldn’t allow for.

That said, we made mention of types of articulating screen and for the purpose of this article, there are 2 kinds.

There is the tilting screen which can basically be moved upward and then downward again. This kind of screen usually varies from camera to camera in the extent it can be moved. The Sony a6000 has a tilting screen or a partial articulating screen.

The other kind is the fully articulating screen which the Canon 70D has. This kind of screen can basically be rotated, making it a good idea for taking selfies. We still think articulating screen counts as a similarity because at the very bottom of it, both cameras have a screen that can be moved.

Anyway, seeing as we are still on the topic of screens, we’ll mention that the screens of both cameras are 3 inches in size. Also, the Canon 70D has a touch screen which allows for even more comfortable selfie taking.

3. Flash

This is another important feature of a camera (well, every aspect of a camera is kinda important but you get what we’re saying). Anyway, the flash is supposed to be a light compensation when you’re taking shots in places that are not well lit.

Now, while some cameras come with just a port for you to attach an external flash to, both the cameras in this review come with an in-built flash. This way, you always have a back-up light for places where the light just isn’t enough.

Furthermore, in addition to having an in-built flash, both cameras also come with a port for an external flash. This way, in addition to having a flash for low light situations, you also get to attach an external flash for those times when you want to get your flash photography done.

4. Wireless Connection

Now, this is one of those features that we could say is exactly the same in both cameras. Most cameras try to be sure that the camera has a way of connecting to the internet. With some cameras, you have to attach an external feature to get that internet connection.

However, both the Sony a6000 and the Canon 70D have an in-built wireless connection. This way, you don’t need to get an external anything, all you basically need is a Wi-Fi connection.

Now that we’re on the topic of wireless connection, let’s also mention that both phones can be connected to a smartphone. How does this work? You need to get the appropriate app first. Then you connect the camera to the smartphone via the app.

Once both devices are connected, you can control your camera using your smartphone. This way, your smartphone acts as both your viewfinder and your control panel. Cool, huh?

5. Picture Resolution

This one tells us in megapixels how detailed photos captured will look. Now, this is another feature where there are slight differences between cameras.

The Sony a6000 has a 24 megapixel picture resolution while the Canon 70D has a 20 megapixel picture resolution.

Now, while the 4 megapixel difference is something, it is still safe to say that both cameras have a good picture resolution. That means whatever photo you take with whatever camera will have great detailing.

6. RAW Support

This is basically about the format in which photos taken get stored. The alternative format is jpeg and jpeg tends to reduce the quality of the photo before saving. This format has an advantage though; photos saved in this format do not take up so much space.

The RAW format, however, allows pictures to be saved in their original quality which is good news for both cameras. However, you need to bear in mind that pictures stored as RAW tend to take up a bit of space than pictures stored as jpeg.

7. Face Detection

Both these cameras come with the face detection feature. The face detection feature enables the camera to recognize and focus on faces as you capture. This singular feature makes both cameras a good idea for portraits.

Sony a6000 Vs Canon 70D – Unique Features

This section will help us see how dissimilar the cameras are. So, we’ll be including those features that you’ll find in one camera but not the other. We’ll also include those features that appear on both but are very different.

1. Weight

This is one very significant difference between the Sony a6000 and the Canon 70D. In keeping with what is expected of the kinds of cameras that they both are, the Canon 70D is significantly heavier than the Sony a6000.

The Sony a6000 weighs about 0.76 pounds while the Canon 70D weighs 1.7 pounds. The difference is really significant and will be more noticeable if you have to move the camera from place to place.

We generally prefer cameras that are lightweight as they do not put so much pressure on the hands and they are easy to lug around. However, we also understand the appeal of not so lightweight cameras; the weight can be reassuring as you go about taking those shots.

You’ll have to decide for yourself which weight works for you. However, in deciding this, you have to bear in mind that the lenses that will be attached to the camera could also contribute to the weight.

Now, both cameras have a number of lenses available to them, so, we can’t exactly go through all of them to determine their weight. What we can tell you, however, is that both the Sony a6000 and the Canon 70D have the same Sized APS-C sensor.

What this means is that for the same aperture and focal length, both cameras will use the same size and weight of lens. This also then means that you cannot bank on the lenses to tip the weight scale. The Canon 70D is significantly heavier than the Sony a6000; body and lenses alike.

2. Battery Life

This is another differences that can be inferred from the kind of camera the Sony a6000 and the Canon 70D are. Mirrorless cameras are not exactly known to have the longest lasting batteries while DSLRs are expected to have batteries with a decent life.

That said, the battery life of cameras is usually determined by how many shots the camera can take with one charge. Now, while the Sony a6000 can afford 360 shots with one charge, with the Canon 70D, you can get 920 shots with one charge.

3. Near Field Connection

Cameras that are NFC enabled can connect wirelessly to other devices (not necessarily cameras) that are NFC enabled. Through this connection, you can easily transfer files from the camera to another devices, wirelessly.

Just so you know, of the 2 cameras in this review, only the Sony a6000 is NFC enabled.

4. Continuous Shot

Continuous shot is basically how we determine the speed of a camera. So, we are basically asking ‘how many shots can I continuously take in 1 second?’ Hence, continuous shooting is measures as frames per second (fps).

That said, with the Canon 70D, you can get 7 frames per second (fps) which is pretty decent if you ask us. However, with the Sony a6000, you can get 11 frames per second (fps). And for a semi-pro camera, the Sony a6000 is pretty fast.

5. Microphone Port

Now, basically all cameras can double as video cameras. And this is the reason they usually have an inbuilt microphone for capturing sounds alongside videos.

However, if you want even better audio capture without the noise, you’ll probably need an external microphone. And if you need an external microphone, you’ll need a microphone port.

That said, of the 2 cameras in this review, only the Canon 70D comes with an external microphone port. This makes it the better camera option for your video coverage and general cinematography needs.

6. ISO Range

This is one feature that could sit well in either the common features section or the unique features section. The reason is that while there is a significant difference between the ISO ranges of the 2 cameras, there is also a significant difference between the ranges.

That said, what is an ISO range? An ISO range basically tells us the lower and upper limits of light sensitivity that a camera can be adjusted to. Now ISO tells us in numbers how sensitive a camera is to light. And the more sensitive a camera is to light, the better it is able to capture light.

However, while this is a good thing, there is also the possibility of a highly sensitive camera capturing environmental noise, resulting in grains.

This is the reason we consider having a wide ISO range a good thing. The photographer will have enough room to make as many adjustments as he wants depending on where he is.

Now here is what we meant about similarities and differences. Neither of the cameras has an exceptional ISO range. However, with the Sony a6000’s 100 to 25600 and the Canon 70D’s 100 to 12800 ISO range, you can see that the Sony a6000 has a wider ISO range. That could really come in handy at some point.

7. Memory Card Support

It is a forgone fact that cameras (digital cameras) need memory cards. These memory cards are the storage feature of the camera and you typically get them separate from the camera.

Now, there are different types of memory cards but the most basic memory cards are usually compatible with all digital cameras. However, the kind that we are particular about in this article is the Ultra High Speed memory card.

The UHS memory card allows for transfer of photos to storage at high speed. However, of the 2 cameras in this review, the UHS memory card is only compatible with the Sony a6000.

8. Environmental Protection

Of these 2 cameras, the only camera that is protected against the elements is the Canon 70D. Now here is what we mean. The Canon 70D is both dust and water resistant. However, be careful to note that water resistant doesn’t exactly mean waterproof.

That it is water resistant means that the camera will be alright if it gets with water or just generally has minor contact with water. However, you do not want to go using the water in the rain or dunking it in water and this is because the camera isn’t waterproof.

On the other hand, because the Sony a6000 is not protected against the elements, it is neither waterproof nor water resistant.

9. Available Lenses

The Canon 70D has more lenses available to it than the Sony a6000 which could come in handy for versatility sake. That said, while the Sony a6000 has 102 lenses available to it, the Canon 70D has 319 lenses available to it.

Furthermore, neither of these cameras has an image stabilization feature. Hence, you’ll have to get an optical optimization lens. The Sony a6000 has 23 of those lenses available while the Canon 70D has 91 of them available.
