Sony a5100 Vs Nikon D3200 – Common Features

In this section, we will be highlighting and explaining in details features that can be found in both of the cameras in this Sony a5100 vs Nikon D3200 comparison article.

1. Built-in Flash

There are situations where it might be necessary to use some light enhancement tools. This feature is one of them.

The built-in flash is an integrated part of the camera that comes in very handy when shooting indoors. Being a part of the camera system, the built-in flash produces just the perfect exposure for your images.

However, the built-in flash can’t solve every light enhancement problem that you might face. So, an external flash becomes the alternative option for situations like this. The external flash will be discussed later in this Sony a5100 vs Nikon D3200 comparison article.

For the built-in flash, both the Sony a5100 and Nikon D3200 share this feature.

2. RAW Support

RAW is an image file format; it is one of the two image formats that cameras generally save images in. The other is JPEG.

RAW is an uncompressed and unedited format of the image. This format is not very widely supported by a lot of devices and websites as it produces photos that are very large in pixel size.

Although the RAW file format is usually large as a result of all the details in the image, this format produces the highest image quality the camera has to offer.

Also, when a device supports the RAW format, this gives you the flexibility to make manual adjustments to the details in the image as you desire.

For the JPEG format on the other hand, when the camera saves in this format, it automatically edits and compresses the details in the image. This compression means that the quality of this image will be reduced.

The JPEG format cannot be tagged a poor image quality format. However, it sure doesn’t offer the best. The RAW support offers the best image quality for a larger consumption of storage space, and both of the cameras in this Sony a5100 vs Nikon D3200 comparison support this file format.

3. Face Detection Focus

Face detection is a feature that detects any human face in the scene, as the name implies. The human face has a lot of recognizable features that the camera can lock onto.

After detecting the face in the scene, the camera can then appropriately apply autofocus on the face to make sure that it remains the primary subject in focus.

The face detection feature is also very important when shooting with a flash in dark environments, the face detection focus automatically corrects and removes the unwanted red-eye effect that shooting with the flash could cause.

This feature is essential for portrait photography, and both of the cameras in this Sony a5100 vs Nikon D3200 comparison have this feature.

4. Max Sensor Resolution

This feature is an image quality determining feature. It is the number of pixels the image sensor of the camera captures in other to produce digital images.

T his feature is commonly known to be associated with the print size of the images shot by the camera. The higher the maximum sensor resolution, the larger the potential print size.

However, there are two other functions the sensor resolution serve that aren’t popularly mentioned. They are downsampling and cropping.

These two functions tend to reduce the quality of the image. Downsampling is basically reducing the resolution of an image.

With a high sensor resolution, when the resolution of the image is reduced, the image still manages to retain some level of quality.

For cropping, it isn’t a function photographers want to go for. However, if you’ll be bound by circumstances to shoot from afar, then cropping becomes your best bet to keep the viewer’s eye on the main subject.

So, if the sensor resolution of the camera is high, the image will still have some of its quality retained after any form of heavy cropping done.

Both of the cameras in this Sony a5100 vs Nikon D3200 comparison article have the same great value of 24 megapixels for their maximum sensor resolution.

5. Video Resolution

Still talking about resolution, this feature has to do with videos. The video resolution of the camera is the number of horizontal lines stacked on top of each other from the top to bottom of the screen.

When a video is displayed on a screen beyond its resolution limit, the video will lose its quality and turn out blurry.

Video resolution is measured in pixels. Some common video resolutions shot by digital cameras include 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p and 4k.

The 360p is restricted to the screen size of mobile devices to retain its quality. Its dimension is 480 by 360 pixels. That is, it has 360 horizontal lines stacked upon each other from top to bottom that is all 480 pixels wide.

As for the 480p, it is the highest video quality of DVDs. Its dimension is 852 by 480 pixels, that is, it has 480 horizontal lines from top to bottom that is 852 pixels wide.

Then moving on to High Definition (HD) display resolutions. The first HD resolution is the 720p this is the resolution is good for computer monitors and HD television screens. Its dimension is 1280 by 720 pixels.

The second HD resolution is the 1080p. This is an even higher resolution for even larger screens. However, it can’t serve commercial cinematic purposes. Its dimension is 1920 by 1080 pixels.

The last common video resolution is the 4K resolution also known as 2160p. This is one of the highest resolutions you can find on digital cameras. It is a cinematic ultra-high definition resolution of two dimensions; 3840 by 2160 and 4096 by 2160.

6. LCD Screen Resolution

Some cameras are built with viewfinders while some aren’t. For those that aren’t, the LCD screen is essential as it performs the functions in place of the viewfinder for framing images before shooting.

Now, for the resolution of this screen, it determines the quality of images the screen would display. When the resolution of the screen is high, images viewed on the screen carry a better quality.

Shooting with the LCD screen is known as shooting in Live mode. As nice and somewhat convenient that shooting in live mode can be, live mode tends to consume a lot of battery power when put to continuous use.

Both the Sony a5100 and Nikon D3200 have high LCD screen resolutions. However, the Sony a5100 has a slightly higher LCD screen resolution.

7. AE Bracketing

This stands for Auto-Exposure bracketing. And this feature is very handy for shooting scenes with a variation of brighter and darker areas.

In situations like this, it is very difficult to ascertain what exposure setting would be the best. The next option might be to begin taking shots one after the other at different exposure settings.

However, this could be very time consuming, especially if your intention was to shoot a scene that undergoes changes par time. So, in other to solve this issue with as much ease as possible, the Auto Exposure bracketing is the best option.

When this mode is applied, the camera takes a number of successive shots at once with different exposures.

This feature leaves you with different options to select the best-exposed image from. And in this Sony a5100 and Nikon D3200 comparison article, both of the cameras have this feature.

8. No Image Stabilization

In the process of trying to capture a shot in a hurry, the photographer’s worst nightmare is to end up with blurs.

Well, that’s where this feature comes to play. It is very important for shooting with the camera hand-held, as there are tendencies to have little shakes while shooting.

The image stabilization works by using two gyre-sensors. When the camera experiences a slight shake or abrupt movement, the sensors detect the movement, calculate the magnitude and angle of the movement in other to counter it.

Now, for the cameras in this Sony a5100 vs Nikon D3200 comparison article, they both do not have this feature. So, if you’ll take shots without blurs, it’d be necessary for you to shoot with a tripod stand or get optical stabilization lenses.

9. No Environmental Sealing

One of the major factors known to cause damage to the camera is the entrance of elements like moisture and dust.

When shooting outdoors, the camera is exposed to these elements and so prone to damage.  However, environmental sealing is a feature that is added to the design of the camera to protect it from these elements.

The sealing, made of rubber and silicon materials, is placed at specific positions on the body of the camera – mainly movable and slightly open parts.

This feature isn’t part of the design of the two cameras in this Sonya5100 vs Nikon D3200 comparison. So, neither of these cameras would be safe under some harsh weather conditions.

Sony a5100 Vs Nikon D3200 – Unique Features

In this section, we shall now highlight and explain in detail features of the two cameras in this Sony a5100 vs Nikon 3200 comparison that make them different from each other.

Sony a5100 Vs Nikon D3200 – Features Unique To The Sony a5100

1. Articulated Screen

Earlier in this article, we mentioned how important the LCD screen of the camera can be. Now, there is an extra feature some LCD screens possess that keeps becoming more and more important to photography.

This is the screen’s ability to move in different directions. When an LCD screen has this ability, the screen is said to be articulated.

Articulated screens are of three different types; tiltable or tilting articulated screen, fully-articulated screen, and cross-tilt or flex-tilt articulated screen.

The tiltable articulated screen as the name implies can only tilt slightly upwards and downwards, as the screen can only move about one axis.

The fully-articulated screen, also known as swivel screen, moves about two axes that are the right angles to each other, thereby, having the ability to both tilt and swivel.

The cross-tilt or flex-tilt screes moves in various directions. It has the ability to move horizontally, vertically and also rotate certain angles while staying aligned to the axis of the lens.

In this Sony a5100 vs Nikon D3200 comparison, only the Sony a5100 is built with an articulated screen which is of the tilting type.

Cameras are gradually entering into this league of touchscreen devices. With a touchscreen LCD, instead of buttons, navigation is done by touching, swiping and touching.

With this feature, navigating through settings in the camera, and editing of images shot become easier. This feature is also unique to the Sony a5100 in this Sony a5100 vs Nikon D3200.

Remote shooting can be very important for shooting in environments where it might be unsafe or inconvenient to shoot in.

With a remote control feature, you can connect the control device to the camera and shoot from a more convenient position.

For the smartphone remote control, all you need is a camera and a smartphone. What makes this form of remote control so interesting and one of the best is that you get a preview of the scene before shooting, without exactly being in the scene.

Sony a5100 Vs Nikon D3200 – Features Unique To The Nikon D3200

1. Viewfinder

The viewfinder of a camera is one of the most important features of the camera. It is the part of the camera that the photographer looks through to compose and properly frame the subject to be shot.

There are two types of viewfinders, they are; electronic and optical viewfinders.

The electronic viewfinder is basically a small screen and is commonly found in mirrorless cameras. The image on the sensor of the camera is electronically displayed to this small screen to give the photographer a preview of the scene.

Optical viewfinders on the other hand function with a mirror mechanism. This viewfinder is more common with DSLR cameras like the Nikon D3200.

For optical viewfinders, light from the scene goes through the lens and hits a reflex mirror positioned at a 45-degree angle. This light is transmitted from the mirror to the prism, the prism converts the vertical light to horizontal by redirecting it through other mirrors, then to the viewfinder.

Not all cameras are built with viewfinders like the Sony a5100. This type of cameras makes use of an LCD screen in place of the viewfinder.

2. External Flash Shoe

Before now, we talked about a light enhancement feature that is built as a part of the camera. However, there is one more feature that has to do with the light enhancement of the scene that you can only find in the design of the Nikon D3200 in this comparison.

This feature lets you mount an external flash onto the body of the camera. The external flash serves as an extra light enhancement tool for the camera.

If you’ll also be planning on doing flash photography, then this feature is essential for this line of work. Also, there is another extra flash feature that only the Nikon D3200 possesses in this Sony a5100 vs Nikon D3200 comparison that has become a thing of great interest to photographers.

This feature is the flash sync port. With this feature on the camera, you can connect the flash to the camera, and then take it off the camera and place at any other position, and it will be triggered by the shutter button.

This feature gives you the ability to try out the lighting of the object or scene from different positions.

3. ISO Range

This feature has to do with the exposure of the image shot. The ISO value of the camera basically determines the light sensitivity of the camera.

The more the value of the ISO, the more the amount of light the camera will allow to its sensor. This feature is very useful for shooting in dark or low light environments.

A high ISO is very important and useful. However, it is important to note that as you increase the ISO value of the camera, there are higher chances of having images with a lot of noise.

Now, for this Sony a5100 vs Nikon D3200 comparison, the ISO of the Sony a5100 is higher than that of the Nikon D3200. You might be wondering now how it is a unique feature of the Nikon D3200.

The ISO range of the Nikon D3200 has an extra feature that you can’t find in the Sony a5100. That is, the ISO range of the Nikon D3200 is expandable. However, even after being expanded to its limit the max ISO value of the Sony a5100 is still higher.

4. Microphone Port

The microphone port of a camera lets you connect an external microphone to the camera. If you’ll be shooting videos in public, then you would need to pay particular attention to this feature.

Generally, cameras are built with internal microphones. However, this internal microphone is only useful for shooting videos indoors where it will be very quiet.

The internal microphone does not have the ability to pick out one sound to record; it records all the sound it detects in the environment. This will produce noisy audio, and that is why the external microphone is necessary.

Now, for this Sony a5100 vs Nikon D3200 comparison, if you intend to shoot videos outdoors, the better choice to make would be the Nikon D3200 as it is the only one built with this feature.
