Articulating Screen

The first feature that can be found in both of the cameras in this Sony a5000 vs Olympus E-PL6 comparison article is the articulating screen.

An articulating screen is an LCD screen that is designed to move in different directions to aid shooting in certain positions. Some articulating screens tilt, some tilt and swivel, while some rotate different angles.

The first type of articulating screen is the tilting articulated screen. This screen can only move about one axis. This allows the screen to just tilt slightly upwards and downwards.

RAW Support

One of the major factors camera users always lookout for when purchasing a camera is the quality of images the camera will shoot.

The feature we’re about to look at is one that has to do with the quality of images the camera will produce. RAW is a file format for saving images.

In cameras, there are two major formats that cameras save files in. The first and most common file format is JPEG, while the second is RAW, it isn’t as commonly used as the JPEG format.

The JPEG format is usually the default format that cameras save images in. When the camera is set to save in JPEG as default, the camera automatically edits and compresses the detail and information in the image once it is shot.

This compression reduces the size of the image and this small image size is what makes it one of the most popularly supported file format across various websites and devices.

As for the RAW format, it is, as the name rightly says, the raw form of the image shot. This simply means that every detail the image had when it was shot will be saved.

The images in this format carry the highest quality the camera can possibly produce. The thing about images is that, because of all the detail in it, it is usually very large in size.

However, with this feature you can manually do whatever form of editing you deem necessary for the image and retain all the quality you detail you want on the image.

Both of the cameras in this Sony a5000 vs Olympus E-PL6 comparison support the RAW format of images.

Face Detection Focus

This feature is one that is essential for photographers who shoot portrait photographs, it is most especially appreciated for shooting subjects like children who find it difficult to maintain one position.

Now, what this feature does is to detect the human face on the scene using its noticeable features like the eyes, mouth, and nose. After detecting the face, it locks down on the face and keeps it in focus as the main subject in the photo.

So, whatever movement the subject makes, the camera adjusts the focus to the position of the subject. It is important to note however that the speed at which the focus will be adjusted varies across cameras.

Both of the cameras in this Sony a5000 vs Olympus E-PL6 comparison have this feature.

AE Bracketing

There are scenes that have certain lighting conditions that could be a problem for the photographer regarding the exposure settings to apply to the image.

Scenes like this include areas with a lot of shades, shadows, and variation in lighting. Selecting the perfect exposure setting can be a major challenge in such scenes as some might be too dark or too bright for the very dark or very bright areas of the image.

The manual solution for this issue would be to shoot different images one at a time at using different exposure settings. This works too, however, a moment you should have captured could easily pass by before you figure out the settings that would be perfect for the image.

This is the importance of the AE Bracketing feature. With this feature, the camera simply takes multiple shots (usually 3) at different exposure values based on the light in can detect from the scene. With this collection to select from, at least one of the images will be perfectly exposed.

This feature is also common to both of the cameras in this Sony a5000 vs Olympus E-PL6 comparison.

Video Resolution

The resolution of a video is the number of horizontal lines stacked on top of each other from the top to the screen. Video resolution is usually written as width x height, and is measured in pixels, eg 1920 x 1080 pixels.

It is also important to note that once the size of a screen exceeds the limit of the display resolution, the video will lose its quality and appear blurry. The most common video resolutions include the 720p, 1080p, and 4K resolutions

The first is the 720p resolution. This resolution falls under a category known as the Higher Definition (HD) resolution. The 720p resolution has a dimension of 1280 x 720, that is 720 horizontal lines that are 1280 pixels wide. This resolution is restricted to lower end High Definition TVs as it is the base of HD display.

Next is the 1080p resolution, it is also a HD display resolution. This resolution is known as the full HD display resolution. The 1080p resolution has a dimension of 1920 x 1080 pixels, meaning that it has 1080 horizontal lines staked on each other from top to bottom that are 1920 pixels wide.

The final video resolution is the 4K resolution. This resolution one of the highest HD resolutions. For the compact digital cameras this is the highest resolution you can get on them. The 4K resolution is also known as 2160p resolution (that is 2160 lines stacked on each other from top to bottom). It is mostly used for commercial/cinematic purposes.

The two cameras in this Sony a5000 vs Olympus E-PL6 comparison have the same Full HD display resolution of 1080p.

No Environmental Sealing

The environmental sealing is a feature that protects the camera from the entrance of weather elements that could cause damage to the inner components of the camera.

Weather elements like snow, dust, and moist gaining access into the inner parts of the camera has been noted to be one of the most causes of damage to cameras.

As for the cameras in this Sony a5000 vs Olympus E-PL6 comparison, they both lack this feature. So, if you’ll be shooting in certain weather conditions, it might be necessary to purchase external weather coverings for the cameras.

Sony a5000 Vs Olympus E-PL6 – Unique Features

Wireless Connectivity

Nowadays, virtually every function that digital devices perform is now done wirelessly. For cameras, the most common wireless functioned on them has to do with file transfer.

Let us now take a look at some common wireless features that most modern cameras have and their functions.

Wi-Fi Connection

This feature allows the camera connect to the internet to share files with other devices.

When a camera has this feature all that is required for it to function is an internet connection. To share files with other devices like computers, there are just two simple steps to follow.

The first would be to give the camera access to your internet connection, then, next would be to set the location on the computer where you want the files saved.

By performing these simple steps your files will be transferred safely to its intended destination without any issues or stress. This feature is unique to the Sony a5000 alone.

Near Field Communication (NFC)

This feature is also a wireless feature that aids file transfer. However, it is mainly used for connecting to smartphones. Another thing about this feature is that it doesn’t require an internet connection.

The range of this feature isn’t usually very wide. So, for the connection to be made the two devices must be in a very close range. On some devices it is required that the two devices come in contact for the connection to be made.

Once the connection is made, the two devices can now communicate and files can be easily transferred from one to the other. This feature can only be found in the Sony a5000.

Smartphone Remote Control

This is a wireless feature that involves remote control. There are a lot of tools that perform the function of remotely controlling the camera.

This particular one is pretty unique and tagged as one of the best yet. What puts it in this spot is the preview this feature offers you while shooting from another position.

With this feature all you need to have is a smartphone and the mobile application of the camera that creates the connection.

So, if you need to shoot scenes that would be uncomfortable to be in, all you have to do is make the connection between the camera and smartphone, place your camera on the scene, find a more comfortable position to shoot from.

After making the connection, you can now see a preview of the scene and even access some settings on the camera, all from your smartphone. This remote control feature is also unique to the Sony a5000.

Eye-Fi Connectivity

This wireless feature is one that is pretty unique. This feature doesn’t require internet connection, neither does it require contact of both devices to function.

All this feature requires to function is a card called the Eye-Fi card. This card doesn’t require any setting up whatsoever, by default it is already set-up.

To use the Eye-Fi card you have to first connect it to your computer and install the software that will allow the card function with a wireless network. When this is done, you then have to configure the networks that will be connected to the card.

You should also set the location where the files sent to and saved on your device.

Once all this is done, you can now share files with your other devices that are in the network configured to the Eye-Fi card in your camera. This feature is also equipped to access social media sites where you might want to share your works with the world, family, or friends.

This Eye-Fi connection is the only wireless connection that the Olympus E-PL6 possesses, the Sony a5000 doesn’t have this feature.

Built-in Flash

This is a light enhancement feature. There are some dark or poorly lit scenes that would require you to make use of light enhancement tools like this one.

This feature is designed as a part of the body and system of the camera. A built-in flash is integrated as a part of the camera’s system, therefore, settings made on the camera would also affect the built-in flash in some areas.

This feature can only be found in the Sony a5000 in this Sony a5000 vs Olympus E-PL6 comparison.

Viewfinder

A viewfinder is a component of the camera that a photographer looks through to get a view of the scene and properly frame the image before shooting. Using a viewfinder for framing the images is usually more convenient, this is as a result of the position at which the camera is held while shooting.

The viewfinder is a very small piece of hardware located at the top area of the camera. So, in order to make use of it, the camera has to be held very close to the eye and body. This positioning provides better stability as the hands are very close to the body.

Viewfinders are designed in two basic types; Electronic and Optical.

Sony a5000 vs Olympus E-PL6
what-camera.com

Get the Sony a5000 now!

Get the Olympus E-PL6 now!

Electronic Viewfinder (EVF)

The Electronic viewfinder (EVF) is basically a small screen. It is more commonly found in mirrorless cameras as it doesn’t require the use of a mirror mechanism to function.

With electronic viewfinders, the camera sensor records the view of the scene and then electronically projects it to the viewfinder.

Optical Viewfinder (OVF)

Then the Optical viewfinder (OVF) on the other hand, is pretty much the same as looking directly through the lens of the camera. Using the optical viewfinder, you are seeing the exact image as it is through the lens of the camera.

The OVF functions with the mirror mechanism of DSLR cameras. Light from the scene is bounced off and projected through mirrors and a prism before finally getting to the viewfinder. Due to the mirror mechanism that this viewfinder functions with, it doesn’t have parallax error, and doesn’t consume a lot any battery power at all.

Now, when it comes to viewfinders, there are some exceptions. Some DSLR cameras are designed with electronic viewfinders. How does this work? Well, it is simple. Instead of the regular reflex mirrors that DSLRs use, DSLRs designed with EVFs make use of translucent mirrors.

Then, there are some cameras that aren’t designed with viewfinders as a part of the camera system. Most cameras in this category make use of the LCD screen as the only means of framing images before shooting.

While for some other cameras, they are designed with components that allow you to attach an external viewfinder to the body of the camera.

As for the two cameras in this Sony a5000 vs Olympus E-PL6 comparison, they both do not have built-in viewfinders. However, the Olympus E-PL6 is compatible with an external viewfinder, so, you can always purchase an external viewfinder and attach to the camera when you need it.

Image Stabilization

One of the biggest challenges photographers face with shooting with the camera hand-held is turning out with blurs as a result of slight shakes.

In order to avoid having this blurs while shooting hand-held (especially when your line of work doesn’t permit you to use a tripod stand for shooting), this feature is very essential.

The image stabilization feature counters the shake and blur using two gyro-sensors. These sensors detect the magnitude and angle of the shake and then adjust the image, thereby, countering the blur.

This feature is built-in for some cameras, while for some, the only way image stabilization can be achieved is from Vibration Reduction (VR) lenses.

As for the cameras in this Sony a5000 vs Olympus E-PL6, only the Olympus E-PL6 has the image stabilization feature built-in into its system.

External Flash Shoe

Earlier, we talked about a light enhancement tool that is designed as a part of the system of the camera (the built-in flash). This feature is another light enhancement feature, however, this feature is external.

The built-in flash can be very important for solving various light enhancement issues you might face. However, the built-in flash has its limits. There are situations where it might not function to the satisfaction of the user.

For such instances, the external flash shoe becomes important. The external flash shoe is a component that allows you to attach an external flash to the body of the camera in order to get the extra light enhancement that is needed.

The external flash provides a much stronger and impressive lighting effect than the built-in flash, it is also very important for your work if you’ll be doing flash photography.

For a camera to be compatible with an external flash, the external flash shoe must be present on the body of the camera. As for the cameras in this Sony a5000 vs Olympus E-PL6 comparison, only the Olympus E-PL6 has an external flash shoe, thereby, being compatible with an external flash.

Touch Screen

Touch screens are another very big trend in the world of gadgets and devices. From smartphones, to ATMs, to computer screens, all these have evolved from different stages of touch screen.

A lot of modern cameras too have gradually started joining this big touch trend. Most of the first shots at incorporating the feature into cameras might not have been very impressive, however, like every other touch screen gadget, they have gradually evolved.

This feature makes navigation across the system of the camera much easier by just touching, pinching, and swiping, you’re getting things done with ease and in short time.

This feature can only be found in the Olympus E-PL6.

Get the Sony a5000 now!          Get the Olympus E-PL6 now!

Timelapse Recording

Have you ever seen videos of things like the sunset, or sunrise, or weather change happen so fast, and wonder “how did they do that”? Well this feature answers that question.

Timelapse recording is a shooting technique that requires the camera to shoot at a frame rate that is way more spread out than the rate at which it will be displayed.

When the video recorded is then played back it will appear to be faster than usual. When videos are shot with this effect, natural phenomena that would usually take numerous hours, days, or even weeks in some cases, will be displayed in a matter of seconds, that’s what makes this shooting technique a very interesting feature.

Some cameras are designed with this feature built-in as a part of the programming and setup of the camera, while for others, in other to achieve this effect, you must find apps that allow the camera shoot this technique.

Looking at this feature in the two cameras in this Sony a5000 vs Olympus E-PL6 comparison, only one has this feature programmed as an option in its system (Olympus E-PL6), while, the other requires the use of an external app to achieve this effect.

The Sony a5000 is a very impressive camera, and we are not just saying it, its features speak for itself.   Also, being able to perform at least above average for different forms of the art is a very big plus side for this camera.
