Overall Rating Of The Sony a5000 Vs Canon 600D

The Sony a5000 and Canon 600D differ in a lot of ways but are also similar in some ways, and we’ll be taking a brief look at those in this section. These two cameras are good for whatever you might need them for. The Sony a5000 has some features better than the Canon 600D and vice versa.

Rating Of The Features Of The Sony a5000 Vs Canon 600D

Like we mentioned in the introduction of this article the two cameras in comparison are of different types; one being mirrorless and the other being a DSLR. Although being different in type, the two cameras have some features common to both of them.

As for weight and size of the two cameras, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the DSLR Canon 600D weighs a lot more than the mirrorless Sony a5000. It is also significantly bigger than the Sony a5000. This isn’t surprising as DSLRs are known to be heavy and bulky. This is as a result of the mirror mechanism system they use.

Also, the Sony a5000 has a better sensor resolution and higher max ISO. Plus it is built with wireless connectivity and an NFC connection, making file transfer to other devices as easy as is possible. The Canon 600D, on the other hand, isn’t built with this feature.

For the battery life of the two cameras, the Canon 600D lasts longer. This also isn’t exactly a surprise, seeing as it is a DSLR camera.

Now, there is another feature that isn’t common to both cameras, this is the viewfinder. The Sony a5000 isn’t built with a viewfinder, so the function of the viewfinder is carried out by a digital LCD screen, and this feature is known to be battery consuming.

Now, for the features the Sony a5000 and Canon 600D both have in common.

These two cameras both have articulating screens. The Sony a5000 has a tilting articulated screen, while the Canon 600D has a fully-articulated screen. These two cameras also have the same values for their video resolution at a full high definition resolution of 1920 by 1080.

Which Has The Better Price-Value Ratio: a5000 or 600D?

The Sony a5000 gives about the same value for money as the Canon 600D. They are both really affordable cameras, and the little price difference can also be accounted for in the different specifications and features. So, yes, they have equivalent price-value ratios.

What Is Each Best For — Sony a5000 Vs Canon 600D?

Sony a6000

Canon 600D

This camera is okay for almost anything you’d want a camera for, the wireless connection, large APS-C sensor, and good low light ISO make it a favorite for a lot of things, especially portrait photography, with 25 focus points. The 600D is also a good choice for anything you want, having almost the same features as the a6000.

However, it’d be important to note that this is a heavy and thick camera so it might not be best for carrying around for daily or travel photography.

Common Features — Sony a5000 Vs Canon 600D

Here are the similarities between the Sony a5000 and the Canon 600D:

i. Articulating screen

ii. Built-n flash

iii. RAW support

iv. Full HD video

v. Face detection focus

vi. No image stabilization

vii. No weather sealing

We will now discuss each of these similarities in detail…

Articulating Screen

The articulated screen is a feature that has become quite essential for camera users over time. This feature lets you take shots at different flexible positions; whether way up high or way down low. Articulated screens have the ability to turn, tilt, and swivel and even rotate.

Both the Sony a5000 and Canon 600D both have articulated screen, however, one functions quite differently from the other.

Articulated screens come in three basic forms

  • The first type is called the tilting screen. This screen has the ability to move around only one axis, it tilts slightly upward and downwards
  • The second type is called the swivel screen, it has other names like rotating the screen and fully articulating or articulated screen. This type moves around two axes that are at the right angle to each other, thereby having the ability to both tilt and swivel.
  • Finally, this last type is called the cross-tilt screen or flex-tilt screen. This one has the ability to move in various angles. This type also tilts both horizontally and vertically and rotates a certain angle and stays aligned with the lens axis.

Now, the articulated screen of the Sony a5000 is of the tilting articulated screen type, while the Canon 600D is of the fully articulated screen type.

Built-In Flash

If you have not had experiences of taking pictures in environments with low or poor lighting, you might not understand the importance of this built-in flash. This isn’t to mean that the built-in flash would solve all the lighting problems, but it does come in handy a lot of times.

The two cameras in comparison- the a6000 and 700D- both have this feature. In cases where the built-in flash isn’t enough to fix whatever light enhancement issues you might be facing, there is a feature only one of these cameras have that helps with such situation. It is called the external flash shoe. This feature will be addressed in a latter part of the article.

RAW Support

Beautiful image quality is one thing everyone loves to have whenever purchasing cameras and that is something this feature brings to the table. When shooting with a camera, there are two basic formats that the camera stores the images with; they are JPEG and RAW.

The JPEG format is a compressed format of digital images. This is one of the most widely supported file formats over devices and even websites, mostly because of its small storage size. As good as it is to have your images taking up little storage space; compression of an image also means lesser quality and detail for the image.

On the other hand, the RAW format is an exact opposite of the JPEG format; meaning it is uncompressed and also not supported by all devices. The RAW format is also known for storage space consumption. However, this format retains all the quality and detail in the image, so you’re sure to produce great picture quality.

JPEG images aren’t of extremely poor quality, but RAW images give you the best quality of the image shot, and the Sony a5000 and Canon 600D both support RAW format pictures.

Video Resolution

Still riding in the quality boat, this is another quality determining feature, but this time for videos.

You know how sensor resolutions determine how large you can print the pictures and still retain the quality, right? Well, the video resolutions also determine how large a screen the videos recorded by the camera can be displayed on and still retain their quality.

For the two cameras in comparison- the Sony a5000 and Canon 600D- they both have the same video resolution values of 1920 by 1080 (1080p). Video resolution, as you know, is measured in pixels. This 1080p resolution is a good one, being a full high definition resolution.

However, this can’t be used for very large screens like commercial cinemas. Videos taken by these cameras are restricted to computer monitors and TV screens to retain the video quality.

Face Detection Focus

This feature is a must-have for portrait photography. As the name implies, it allows you detect faces when they are directed at a person for a shot. And not only do they detect the face, but they also lock down on the face for precision in taking the shot. This is another feature both these cameras share.

No Image Stabilization

When taking shots while holding the camera with the hands, there are very high chances of slight shakes or abrupt movements that could result in blurry and untidy images. To avoid these issues, it is possible to place the camera on a table or on a tripod stand.

However, in some forms of photography or videography, it is quite impossible to make use of tripod stands. For cases like those, the image stabilization feature is very important to avoid having shaky or blurry photos.

Image stabilization works with gyro-sensors. These sensors detect the motion created by the shake and adjust to counteract the motion thereby, removing any possibility of having blurry images.

The two cameras in comparison both lack this feature; this means there are tendencies of having a few shaky photos if they are taken in a hurry.

No Environmental Sealing

Environmental sealing protects your camera from harsh weather conditions, and these two cameras both lack this feature, making it unsafe and prone to early damage if used for outdoor photography like landscape or wildlife.

Unique Features — Sony a5000 Vs Canon 600D

Mirrorless vs DSLR: Sony a5000 vs Canon 600D

The very first thing that makes the a5000 and 600D different from each other — and also largely determines a lot of their other differences — is their camera type. Mirrorless cameras (like the Sony a5000), as their name clearly states, are built without mirrors, while DSLR ones (like Canon 600D) have mirrors.

When taking pictures with mirrorless cameras, light is sent from the lens of the camera to the sensors, then to the electronic viewfinder or LCD screen (in the case of the a5000, it is built without an electronic viewfinder, therefore the light from the sensor is sent to the LCD screen).

This light is what displays the image and helps the photographer focus and compose the image).

Now for DSLRs (like the Canon 600D), they make use of a mirror mechanism for taking photos. This involves the use of a mirror and a prism.

While shooting, light from the scene passes through the lens the camera into a reflex mirror, sitting at an angle of 45 degrees. The light is forwarded vertically to a Pentaprism. This prism then converts the vertical light to horizontal by redirecting the light through two separate mirrors, straight to the optical viewfinder.

With all this in mind, we can now move on to other distinguishing factors between these two cameras.

Here is a video that explains more about the mirrorless and DSLR cameras:

Which weighs less: a5000 or 600D?

If you’re looking to pick a lightweight camera for travel or daily photography, the Sony a5000 would be the better choice as against the Canon 600D. One of the major features that distinguish mirrorless (Sony a5000) from DSLR cameras (Canon 600D) is their weight and size. Seeing as there are more components to be placed inside the DLSRs, thereby resulting in them being bulkier and heavier.

Also, the Sony a5000 is not only lighter than the Canon 600D, but it is also a very light camera. It weighs 269g as against 570g of the 600D, which doesn’t come as a surprise seeing as the Canon 600D is a DSLR, a weight difference of 301g says it all.

Also, more reasons why the a5000 is great for daily and travel photography is its body size. The Sony a5000 is 23mm narrower, 37mm shorter, and 44mm thinner than the body of the Canon 600D. This simply means that it’d be less stressful to carry around and would consume less bag space.

Which comes with a viewfinder: a5000 or 600D?

Viewfinders are what allow the photographers to compose, frame and focus the subject properly. The Canon 600D comes with an optical viewfinder but the Sony a5000 does not come with any viewfinder at all. So the only means of viewing the image while shooting is via an LCD screen.

Mirrorless cameras are commonly built with electronic viewfinders, while some aren’t; in cases like this, they just make use of digital display LCD screens (like with the a5000).

DSLRs, on the other hand, are built with optical viewfinders, and that is the case with the Canon 600D. The system of operation has already been broken down earlier.

Which comes with built-in Wi-Fi: a5000 or 600D?

The Sony a5000 comes with built-in Wi-Fi while the Canon 600D does not. This is a feature that has made modern cameras even easier to use. It enhances and makes file sharing very much easier. So, instead of removing and inserting memory cards or USB chords, file sharing is done directly from the camera to other Wi-Fi enabled devices like computers or printers for processing.

This feature also contains a component called the NFC (Near Field Communication), which allows the camera connect with devices that are close by and Wi-Fi enabled just by touching them together. Such devices include smartphones, and the camera can even be remotely controlled by these phones.

Now, comparing the Sony a5000 vs Canon 600D, you find that the Canon 600D, on the other hand, does not have built-it Wi-Fi, but can attain wireless connectivity through the use of an Eye-Fi card. This feature is an SD card that has Wi-Fi capabilities. When an Eye-Fi card is inserted in a camera, it allows you wirelessly and automatically upload photos to your computer, phone or any Wi-Fi enabled device.

Which has the higher maximum sensor resolution: a5000 or 600D?

The Sony a5000 has a maximum sensor resolution of 20 megapixels, slightly higher than the 18 megapixels of the Canon 600D. The quality of photos a camera is able to produce means everything to a photographer and this is a big determinant when it comes to photography, especially if you’ll be printing.

Sensor resolution is measured in “megapixels”– a term you’re probably already be used to when it comes to photography. The sensor resolution determines a lot of things in the quality of images because, the higher the resolution of the camera, the better chances you have for making various adjustments — like heavy cropping and downsampling.

The best part is that you get to do all these while still retaining the quality of the pictures. The resolution of the camera also determines how large you’ll be able to print an image and still, of course, retain the quality.

Which has more auto focus points: a5000 or 600D?

When it comes to focus points, the Sony a5000 knocks out the Canon 600D. The a5000 has 25 focus points, while the 600D has a total of just 9 focus points. Autofocus points are points the camera uses to focus on a particular subject. When a camera is set to automatic auto-focus selection while shooting, pressing the shutter half-way triggers a beep that lights up some of the autofocus points in the viewfinder or display screen.

The autofocus points that light up show where the camera is focusing.

Now, a camera with a good number of focus points comes in very handy when you’re the type that shoots action or subjects that are usually in constant motion. A high number of focus points reduces the chances of losing the subject in an area that is away from the focus point.

Sometimes though, having the camera set to automatic autofocus points could be a disadvantage. For example, if shooting in an environment with various distinct contrasts, the camera could get confused on what are to pick as the point of focus.

In situations like this, the solution is to just set the camera to manual autofocus, this way you can manually select the point of focus for your image.

Which is better in low light: a5000 or 600D?

The Sony a5000 and Canon 600D have the same values for their base ISO at 100 ISO. However, where they differ is in their max ISO. The Sony a5000 has a better max ISO of 16000, while the max ISO of the Canon 600D is 6400. That’s also okay but not as high as that of the Sony a5000. Another factor that makes the ISO of these cameras very different is that the max ISO value of the Canon 600D can be expanded to 12800. The ISO of the Sony a5000, on the other hand, cannot be expanded.

The ISO is what determines how sensitive to light your camera will be. Basically, it is a setting in the camera that could determine how bright or dark an image would be. As the ISO value increases, you notice that the brightness of the image increases progressively. This makes ISO a great tool for capturing images in dark environments or environments with low lighting,.

All cameras have different range of values for their ISO. And as greatly important high ISO values are, lower values are also very important, as they give the ability to produce as high picture quality as is possible. This is especially because they give a much lower risk of getting noisy photos.

Which is better for flash photography: a5000 or 600D?

The Canon 600D is better for flash photography than the Sony a5000 and that is because it is the only one of the two that comes with an external flash hot shoe. This is a component that allows you to attach an external flash to the top of the body of the camera. There is also one more flash feature that makes the Canon 600D the favorite for flash photography. It’s called the flash sync port.

What makes this feature interesting is that it allows you test lighting on the subject from various angles and positions. And it’s easy to operate. You simply sync the flash to the camera, then take the flash off the camera and place it in different positions or angles. By doing this, you cause a triggering of the flash whenever the shutter opens.

Which has the better battery life: a5000 or 600D?

Taking a look at the number of shots per single charge of the Sony a5000 vs Canon 600D, it is safe to say that they both have good battery power. But the Canon 600D outperforms the Sony a5000. The latter has a battery power that lasts 420 shots per single charge. This is a great battery power compared to some other mirrorless cameras that usually tend to have lower battery power. The Canon 600D has a battery power that can last 440 shots per single charge which is also great.

Which offers an option for better audio quality: a5000 or 600D?

The Canon 600D comes with a microphone jack that allows you to connect an external microphone to the camera. Now, most cameras come with internally built microphones. However, if you’ll be recording in public and noisy environments, the internal microphone of the camera becomes quite useless; it picks up all the noise, resulting in pretty bad audio.

So, what an external microphone does is to pick only the audio it is directed at. For example, if you’ll be doing interviews at events where there are a lot of people, the external microphone channels the recording to just what it is pointed at and amplifies that sound.

If you’re getting a camera that’ll be used to take videos, then the importance of this feature for your work can’t be overemphasized.

For the Sony a5000, it isn’t built with this feature. So, if you’re looking to take videos in public places and want excellent audio, then this camera might not be your best choice. Although, if you’ll be taking videos indoors; especially air-tight rooms, then this isn’t a bad choice after all.

Unique Pros — Sony a5000 vs Canon 600D

Pros Of The Sony a5000

  • The first feature that makes this camera stand a better chance is its wireless connectivity. File sharing, transfer, and processing are all made easy with the push of a button.
  • Also, the a5000 has higher max sensor resolution, making it a better choice if you’ll be doing large prints. As we have mentioned earlier, the higher your resolution, the larger the potential size of your prints.
  • This camera also would be better for shooting in low light or dark environments, having a higher max ISO value of 16000 ISO. It is important to note, though, that it cannot be expanded.
  • Furthermore, for portrait photography and shooting objects that are constantly changing positions, the number of focus points a camera has is very important in order to keep the subject as the focal point. In this regard, the Sony a5000 also beats the Canon 600D at 25 and 9 focus points respectively.
  • This camera is a good choice thanks to its light weight and small body size. The Sony a5000 weighs much less than the 600D (about 301 grams less), making it a better choice for daily and travel.
  • Also, the a5000 has a better color depth than the Canon 600D. The color depth of a camera is what the camera uses to store color information of an image. The higher that value, the better the camera will be at picking unique colors in a scene. The Sony a5000 beats the Canon 600D with a color depth of 23.8 against 22.1 of the Canon 600D.

Pros Of The Canon 600D

  • Firstly, the Canon 600D has an external flash shoe, a higher flash coverage distance, and a flash sync port. This implies that you have nothing to worry about if you have to shoot in low light environments and need light enhancement or are into flash photography. The Canon 600D is built with all these, while the a5000 isn’t.
  • Also, the Canon 600D has another telling feature that puts it in the advantage; that is the viewfinder while the Sony a5000 doesn’t.
  • Apart from having a viewfinder, the Canon 600D also has a higher LCD screen resolution than the Sony a5000. The high-resolution screens show pictures at the highest quality possible, and this is a feature that the Canon 600D takes top marks for with a screen resolution of 1.040k dots against 461k dots of the Sony a5000.
  • The Canon 600D also has a better battery power than the Sony a5000, having the ability to shoot 20 more frames per single charge
  • Finally, for filming and taking videos, especially in public places where you need the sound coming from just one subject, then the Canon is a better choice; thanks to its microphone port.

Unique Cons — Sony a5000 Vs Canon 600D

Cons Of The Sony a5000

There are two major cons the a5000 possess:

  • The first is it is incompatible with an external flash. Therefore, the only means of light enhancement would be the built-in flash which isn’t always enough for all low light situations.
  • The second and last is the lack of a viewfinder. Apart from being at a disadvantage in properly framing the image, the lack of this feature means that you’ll have to resort to the use of the LCD screen, which is battery draining.

Cons Of The Canon 600D

  • The first major con of the Canon 600D is its lack of NFC connection. File sharing won’t be as fluid as it would’ve been if it possessed the feature.
  • Also, another telling con of the 600D is its weight and body size. This camera is quite the heavy and bulky camera.
